In otherwords, the English and mathclasses in each academyhave a curriculumdesigned to “fit-in” withthe main subjects beingtaught in the academies.STEMThe Science, Technology,Engineering and MathAcademy is in a specialfacility at NorthwestEATONHigh School. It is headedby Josh Withers, a WiseCounty native and NorthwestISD graduate. Withers, oftenhonored as one of the district’s“teachers of the year,” is the son ofthe Rev. They have a full-sizestudio with three cameras and atleast three separate “sets” to delivera daily web-based newscast,a “green screen” to help studentsforecast the weather and a setwith two lounge chairs where Dr.Rue delivers a monthly “state-ofthe-district”report.The studio is supported bya control room with the latestequipment, a smaller broadcaststudio equipped with digitalrecording capabilities and otherlaboratories concentrating ondigital media.Rawe explained there are “threetracks” for students in AMAT— the media technology track, digital graphics and animationtrack and information technologytrack. There is no doubt in my mindthat students coming out ofAMAT will have a real “leg-up” ontheir peers when they graduateand enter college — or when theygo to work in the industry.AMPThe two academies that seemdesigned most for “ready to work”after graduation are at ByronNelson High School in TrophyClub. Abraham Lincolnknew this when he said that anyonewho was willing to die in anattempt to kill a president couldsucceed, as John Wilkes Boothproved in that hideous night atFord’s Theater.Political correctness killed innocentpeople at Ft. Hood when Maj.Nidal Malik Hasan gunned down13 people and wounded manyothers, despite the fact that hisfellow officers were aware of hisattachment to radical Islamismand all that it implied. It is thesame political correctness thatis stopping us today from doingwhat we truly need to be doing atairports and other public places:profiling all passengers.I unconsciously profile strangersI encounter and so do you. Itis well past time that PresidentObama and his TSA do it as well, and it’s just too darned bad ifanyone is offended.Mr. President, Israel’s El Al Airlinesinspectors routinely profilepassengers and keep their handsto themselves, and they haven’tallowed a single terrorist to boardtheir planes. You should followsuit and tell your TSA peopleto keep their fumbling hands tothemselves.!Michael Reagan is the son ofPresident Ronald Reagan anda political consultant. 2A WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Thursday, December 2, 2010SPORTSAUTO RACINGMessenger photo by Joe DutyFAMILY TEAM — Tony Hogan, who works as crew chief for his son, Andy, checks out the mini-sprint car before it returns to the Cowtown Speedway track inKennedale during a recent practice.Fast track to success...Continued from page 14Ausually joined by his mother, Danko, and his two younger siblings, Adamand Madilyn, who have both raced. His grandfather and a cousin usuallymake the trip from Iowa Park tosee Andy run as well.“We started racing as a family,”Danko said.During the racing season, it’s a fulltimecommitment that requires sacrificesby the young driver. He missedmost weekend social events this pastfall, including the homecoming dance. He tried to balance playing freshmanfootball with racing this past fall. Hehad to miss an early season scrimmage.“I had to do so many bear crawlsfor that,” Andy said. “But you have tosacrifice if you want to make it.”His and the family’s time was justthe start of the sacrifice. Racing is nota cheap sport although sponsors dohelp pay part of the bill. During Hogan’sfirst year, as he learned the carand how to run it, he went throughseveral motors. Some runs are more expensive thanothers, especially if there’s a wreck, and he’s had a few. In one of the morememorable wrecks, he flipped eighttimes and broke the axle on his car.To his mother’s surprise, that wreckdidn’t end his night.“Thirty to 45 minutes later, he wasback out there racing,” Danko said. The bad wrecks don’t test the youngdriver’s nerves.“You can’t let a bad crash affectyou,” Andy said.Fortunately, this past year Hogankept the car on four wheels and inthe winner’s circle most of the season. In his third full season in the minisprintdivision in Kennedale, he wonnine times and captured the seasontitle by 111 points. He is equally as good at the othertracks he raced at.“This year, it all came together,”Tony said. “This year, we could go toany track and have a chance to win. He’s learned how to trust the car.”Making his title run more impressivethis year was the fact he did itcompeting against 2009 Devils BowlWinter Nationals champion KevinRamey and several other veterandrivers.“He’s good and has a lot of naturaltalent,” said Rawdon, who runs thetrack in Kennedale and has spent 30years racing across the nation. “Heshould be a big star soon. He can runwith the big guys. He’s already beenoutrunning them.”This past week, Hogan got a sprintcar. Everyone was like, ‘who is that littlekid walking around the go-carts?’”His first race did little to quell thequizzical looks.“I did awful,” Hogan said. “I hit everythingbut the light stand.”But six weeks later, he started winningand has never stopped. The Decatur14-year-old, who graduated fromgo-carts after winning three varioustitles, just captured the 2010 CowtownSpeedway championship in the minisprintclass. The boy racing among men now islooking to make another jump in classin January as he hopes to one day blazehimself on the fast track to a racing career.“I want to make a life out of it,” Hogansaid. “People make good money off of it,and I want to.”Since he was little, Hogan had a needfor speed. He first wanted to race fourwheelers, but it was not something hisfather, Tony, was too keen on.“He didn’t think that was safe,” the14-year-old said. “This is a lot saferthan motocross, and we go faster.”Seven years before he was eligible toapply for a driver’s license, Hogan beganturning laps at 50 mph around tracksin his go-cart. At theend of the 2006 season, he won Rookieof the Year and the other drivers atKam Kartway in Rhome tabbed him asBest Overall Junior Driver.“Everything just clicked so fast,” Hogansaid. “It was hard to believe. Mostof the kids racing carts were my agenow, and I was 9.”After a couple of years of dominatingthe local cart ranks, it came timeto move up in class. It came with someurging from Bo Rawdon, operator ofCowtown Speedway in Kennedale.“Bo told us we ran off all his go-cartcustomers,” said Tony Hogan. So at 11, Andy stepped into driving amini-sprint car. The bigger, faster carsunder the right conditions can reach 90mph.“The first time in this car was kindof radical,” he said standing outside hiscar before turning practice laps aroundthe Tarrant County speedway.Andy had to learn how to drive thenew car against older racers. His father, who works on his car, had to learn to setit up for the track.“It’s all my doing with the way I setup the car,” Tony Hogan jokes about hisson’s success.Tony’s work behind the scenes is justpart of a family effort behind Andy as heheads to the track to race Fridays andSaturdays from March to October. She knewinstantly that she had done more damageto herself than just the average fall; shehad actually fractured her right hip. Shirleycrawled back into the house and waitedthere for 4 hours until her family returnedhome. After undergoing surgery and somephysical therapy at the hospital, Shirley said,“I knew that I had to have additional therapybefore I could go home.” Shirley had heardabout Senior Care Health & RehabilitationCenter, a new facility, that had just openedand set out to investigate from her hospitalbed. After completing her homeworkregarding her next step to recovery, shewas ready to be admitted to Senior Care.“I knew that the emphasis would be placedon care,” explains Shirley; to her reliefshe was correct. Redness and bleedingmay also occur as a result of scratching. As the disease progresses, there is also the danger that vulvar tissues will scar and shrink. Nomatter how mild the symptoms, the condition should be treated toprevent progression. The American College of Obstetricians andGynecologists recommends applying a potent steroid for severalweeks, followed by gently tapering off the medication.Today’s women are more aware of their body’s needs and the optionsavailable for continued well-being and healthcare. Our practice isdevoted to the care of women and finding the best solution to yourneeds. To schedule an appointment, call WISE OBSTETRICS &GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our office is convenientlylocated at 1713 South Fm 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients arewelcome.P.S. While the exact cause of lichen sclerosus is not known, thecondition may be related to a lack of sex hormones in the affectedskin or to an overactive immune system.
