On his home beach, and also carrying the title of Australian champion, he is verymuch the man to beat. Smith, who was fourth in the World Interclub Titles after winning the National TeamsIronman title at Lorne a fortnight ago, is not over the line in his pursuit of a fifth title, however, and will bechallenged by the likes of clubmate Chris Allum, Daniel Shade from Avoca, Swansea Belmont’s JoshBlair, Maroubra’s Ben Squires, Reid Schofield of Terrigal and Bulli’s Drew Cairncross, Ben Allen andGregg Miller. Queenscliff teenager Matt Poole was a sensation at the Northern Beaches championships, winning both the Open and Under-19 events and could challenge the older competitors.Open FemaleNaomi Flood is the defending champion and her move down the sand from Queenscliff to Manly has donenothing to affect her form, with a stirring second to an unstoppable Kristy Munroe at the WorldChampionships in Lorne a fortnight ago. Flood, the Australian Under-19 champion, will be tough to beat, but it is anything but a foregone conclusion. Amanda Hey (Terrigal) won two years ago and was second toFlood last year so she will be determined to win back the crown. In an event where the standard ofcompetition seems to improve every year, there will be plenty of other contenders including Bulli’s BrittanySharkey and Nicole Sheedy, Candice Falzon of North Bondi, Flood’s Manly teammate EmmaSchneider, Hayley Condran of North Wollongong and Sawtell’s Courtney Hancock.Under-19 MaleA great showdown looms in this event, with an array of super young talents set to fight for the crown.Leading contenders include outstanding all-rounder David Smith of Warilla-Barrack Point, Queenscliff’sMatt Poole, Josh Minogue of Thirroul and Brendan Schofield of Terrigal. Others who can’t bediscounted are Shane Barrie (North Wollongong) and Hayden Allum (Wanda).Under-19 FemaleWith some of the big name competitors moving out of this division this year, it gives up and comers thechance to prove themselves. Courtney Hancock of Sawtell, who won the Under-17 title last year, has hada great season and looks set to play a big role in this event, along with the likes of Elyse Yardley (NorthWollongong), Meggie Helson (Shellharbour) and Cronulla’s Kristy May Morris, Peta Scanlon and KarlaAttwells. Arielle Bird of Queenscliff has been a consistent performer although is battling a knee injury, and her clubmate Emma Parsons can test anyone on her day.Under-17 MaleCollaroy’s Kendrick Louis led the charge for NSW at the Interstate titles and took the top prize at theInterbranch championships. Wade Love-Attard (Manly) and Ben Miller (Terrigal) filled the places at theInterbranch and will challenge again, while Jacob Lollback of Yamba will be back to defend the title hewon last year. Mitch Crow of Redhead, Kirk Gosper of Manly and Avoca Beach’s Liam Jackson couldalso find themselves in the mix.Under-17 FemaleThere isn’t much either Freshwater’s Alisha Miller or Swansea Belmont’s Kimberley Tapley haven’t wonthis year and it would surprise no-one to see one of the outstanding pair on top of the dais this week. Ifthey are to be upset, perhaps Sawtell’s Bonnie Hancock is the most likely as she attempts to grab the
