2005 Coolangatta Gold preview….Did you know? Surf Life Saving Australia has 113,000 surf lifesaving club members andaround 43,000ACTIVE MEMBERS who patrol our beaches representing 304 SENIORCLUBS. Another 41,000 are nippers (under 14 years old) with the remainder being longservice members, associate members, life members and others.WHO WILL BE CROWNED KING ANDQUEEN OF THE GOLD 2005?DAVID LYALL previews the 2005 Coolangatta Gold….After a 13- year absence from the surf sports calendar the Gold Coast will play host to theKellogg’s NUTRI-GRAIN Coolangatta Gold on October 16, 2005 and a new winner will becrowned - just the fourth ever champion of the endurance epic. All three previous Coolangatta Gold winners, Guy Leech (1984 & 85), Michael King (1991)and Darren Mercer (1992) will be on hand for the race that for the first time will include anunder 19 and team category over the full 46.65 kilometre distance and a women’s event over25.5km’s.Almost 200 competitors representing 52 clubs, from as far a field as Perth, New Zealand andCanada will come together for what is shaping up to be a spectacular return for one ofAustralian Surf Life Saving’s iconic endurance events.Set on the Gold Coast, the 1984 movie “The Coolangatta Gold” was the story of two brothers, one a promising athlete and the other the underdog, and how they meet in a head-to-headcontest when they enter a tough run, swim, board and surf ski marathon. The film, released in November 1984, starred surf lifesaving legend Grant Kenny and a youngColin Friels and was filmed in conjunction with the running of the inaugural race in front of amassive crowd at Surfers Paradise and many of the scenes in the film are action from the race. The real race, won by Guy Leech in January 1984, captured the imagination of all Australiansand made the then unheralded 18-year-old from Manly a household name. Now the search is on to find the next Ironman superstar!Ironically, heading up the list of contenders are brothers Shannon and Caine Eckstein, bringing back memories from the movie and adding more spice to a race that is set to have asmuch drama and great action as the original. In keeping with the family connection with the great race Mooloolaba veteran Dean Mercer willtry and emulate the feat of his brother Darren who won the Gold the last time it was staged, in1992.Dean was third himself in that race and sees winning this event as the final frontier in a careerthat has spanned two decades and brought two Australian Ironman titles amongst a long list ofachievements.4

And in a further twist Mercer and his Mooloolaba club mates Tim Peach, Rhys Drury, SteveMeredith and Shane Watson are all coached by Michael King who won the Gold in 1991 andsplit the Mercer brothers the following year.Jeremy Cotter (Northcliffe) and Josh Blair (Swansea Belmont) are two experienced NSWborn and bred Ironmen who have worked closely with Leech in the build up to the race and willuse the advice from the two-time winner throughout the day. With the last Coolangatta Gold held 13 years ago most of the field for this year’s race havenever seen the race live, let alone competed in it but like Mercer there are a few elderstatesmen that have.Tugun’s Guy Andrews, Bronte’s Scott Thomson, Elouera’s Grant Wilkinson and NorthCronulla’s Shane Whittaker have all raced in the Coolangatta Gold or now defunct Gold CoastGold and will know how it feels to slog through four-and-a-half hours of pain.Whether that is an advantage is yet to be proven. One competitor who has done the Coolangatta Gold and just about every other Ironman eventin history is Noosa Heads’ 61-year-old Alan Coates. In the inaugural women’s event, experienced 25-year-old Hayley Bateup and formerAustralian Ironwoman champion Kristy Cameron (both Northcliffe) will be confronted by ahandful of youngsters from across the country including her training partner Sheree Merryful,Manly’s Naomi Flood, Metropolitan Caloundra’s Gemma Newbiggin and Mooloolaba’sChelsea McKenzie.Bateup, the only big name competitor in the field with race experience over anywhere near the25.5km distance, has been training on the race course for months and must be one of thefavourites, while Cameron, a two-time Kellogg’s NUTRI-GRAIN Ironwoman Series winner, isalways hard to beat even though she has been battling a chronic knee injury.Flood has long been seen as the logical successor to a group of Queensland basedIronwoman who have dominated the sport in recent years including Karla Gilbert, ReenCorbett (now wife of Dean Mercer), Kristy Munroe, Kristyl Smith, Bateup and Cameron. She has been training under Manly legend Craig Riddington who was third in the firstCoolangatta Gold in 1984.Perhaps two women that may surprise the entire field are Naantali Marshall from Anglesea,Victoria, and City of Perth’s Jacinta Marriott. And in another twist and in keeping with the Coolangatta Gold family traditions, Gemma andDylan Newbiggen will provide the first brother-sister combination.Guy Leech, the winner of the first two Coolangatta Golds, will contest the 2005 race as therunner in the new Team Event.Leech says he is looking forward to the final leg in front of what promises to be an adoringGold Coast crowd.“I just want to soak up the atmosphere in that final run leg,” Leech said.5

“It’s going to be different this time because I won’t be leading and I won’t have the pressure Ihave had before.“My team is just a bunch of mates who wanted to be involved in such a great event one way oranother and the Teams race concept is great.“I will enjoy this experience a lot more than I have in the past and I am sure I won’t be upset ifsomeone runs past me because I am here for the fun of it.”The Teams race is another “first” on the Coolangatta Gold program but has been introduced asa wonderful way for competitors who specialise in one particular discipline to be part of theevent.Teams of four, comprising a ski paddler, swimmer, board paddler and runner have been puttogether and to add to the excitement competitors were able to join with proficient members ofany surf club to fill their team.Leech, the name most synonymous with the Coolangatta Gold, will again greet the judges atSurfers Paradise when he runs the final leg for a composite team that also includes formerAustralian Surf Life Saving Team Captain Sean Davis.Leech’s club mate Dave Kissane, who was third in the 1991 Coolangatta Gold, will paddle skifor the Manly team, Australian board bronze medallist, Tim Foran and two-time Olympickayaker Peter Scott will head up the Redhead (NSW) team and former World and AustralianIronman runner-up Luke Richmond will paddle ski for Southport. The team to beat however is undoubtedly the Tugun side that includes Commonwealth Gamesswimming hopeful and four-time Australian Ironman champion Ky Hurst.Hurst, who has been starring in Channel Seven’s popular television program Dancing WithThe Stars, will do the swim leg, his younger brother Dane the board, Olympic kayak candidateKen Wallace the ski and marathon runner Stephen Madden the run.Tugun has won a record-equalling four consecutive Australian Taplin Relay titles since 2002and whilst Ky Hurst was part of the first three victories brother Dane and Wallace have beenin the team on all four occasions.Photo courtesy SLSA6

SLSA Fact Sheet No. 1October 2005What is Surf Life Saving Australia?Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) is Australia’s major water safety and rescue authority and isone of the largest volunteer organisations in the country. Our mission is “to provide a safebeach and aquatic environment throughout Australia.”SLSA and its state centres provide patrol services on around 300 of the 11,011 1 beachesaround Australia’s 36,735 2 km of coastline. In addition to this core service and responsibility, SLSA also contributes to the community by:• Training volunteer surf lifesavers and lifeguards to undertake rescues, administer firstaid and take preventative actions to keep our beaches safe;• Developing and implementing community and school education programs, including toregional and rural communities.• Providing helicopter, jet and offshore rescue boat services;• Collecting and maintaining a database of geographical conditions, wave action andhazard ratings on all beaches in Australia;• Developing an understanding of beach safety by maintaining a database of all coastaldrownings, major incidents and first aid treatments attended by SLSA lifesavers orlifeguards;• Managing and delivering surf sports events, including the Australian Surf Life SavingChampionships.SLSA is a volunteer organisation and our services are provided by surf lifesavers whocomplete surf patrols in their own time – usually a half-day patrol every 2 to 3 weeks. Our totalmembership of more than 113,000 is spread across 304 affiliated surf lifesaving clubs in everyAustralian state and the Northern Territory. Of these, around 34,000 actively patrol ourbeaches. In the 2004/05 season, our volunteer members were involved in 12,232 rescues, taking tomore than 500,000 the total number of lives saved since the formation of the original surflifesaving association in 1907. Surf lifesavers also provided 28,621 first aid services andundertook 252,864 preventative actions during the season.SLSA provides around 70 per cent of professional lifeguard services contracted to local councilor resort operators. In 2004/05, Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) lifeguards were involved in2,369 rescues, 9,028 first aid treatments and 291,925 preventative actions.Surf Life Saving Australia is a charity and relies on the generous support of the public and oursponsors – DHL, Telstra, Insurance Australia Group (through its various brands – NRMAInsurance, SGIC & SGIO), Kellogg Australia, Yamaha, Westpac (through the Life SaverRescue Helicopters), Willow Ware, Nivea - and the Australian Government. In 2007, SLSA will celebrate one hundred years since the formation of the Surf BathingAssociation of NSW. The Federal Government has declared that 2007 will be officially knownas The Year of the Surf Lifesaver, in commemoration of this milestone.www.slsa.asn.au1Surf Life Saving Australia, Australian Beach Safety and Management Program. Includes 721 ocean beaches in NSW, 692 ocean and PtPhillip Bay beaches in Vic and 1600 mainland beaches in Qld.2Department of the Environment, Sports and Territories, The State of the Marine Environment Report for Australia: Technical Summary,Canberra, 1996, p.22650
