NSW Surf Life Saving Championships - Fast Facts2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDE* In 2005 at Umina, Cronulla’s Nathan Smith became the first person to win four consecutive NSW OpenIronman championships. Not since Robert Chapman of Elouera in 1983 and 1984 had anyone else everwon two straight. That record is not the only piece of history made by the Smith family after Nathan’s sisterKristyl won the Ironwoman in 2003, making them the first ever brother-sister combination to win thecoveted titles. (They went on to claim their first Australian titles in 2005).* The brother combination of Dean and Darren Mercer won the NSW Open Board Rescue title five timesand the dynamic duo have seven NSW Open Ironman crowns between them.* Steve Warren of North Cronulla won the Open NSW Board championship event five years in a rowbetween 1974 and 1978.* Cronulla's, Daniel McLellan has the most consecutive Open Belt Race victories at a NSW Championshipwith six between 1993 and 1998.* Olympians that have won a NSW Open Surf Race title include, Gary Winram (North Bondi), JonDonohoe (Clovelly), Terry Buck (Clovelly), Greg Rogers (Clovelly), Graham Windeatt (Collaroy), RobertNay (Wollongong), Ron McKeon (South Maroubra), Brad Cooper (Wollongong), Max Metzker(Maroubra), Scott Miller (Manly) and Malcolm Allen (Maroubra).* Female Olympians who have won a NSW Surf Race title include, Stacey Gartrell (Wanda), LeighHabler (Coogee) and Elka Graham (Manly).* No Open Ironwoman has ever won three NSW Championships. Samantha O'Brien (South Maroubra),Courtney Ellis (Manly), Lilli Miller (Bulli) and Kristy Cameron (The Lakes/Wamberal) all have twovictories to their names.* 2004 Australian Ironwoman champion Kristy Cameron, competing for The Lakes/Wamberal, is the onlycompetitor to win both the NSW Open Ironwoman and NSW Under-19 (or Under-18) Ironwoman titles inthe same year.* In 2004 Kristy Smith (North Cronulla) won her fifth consecutive NSW Open Female Beach Sprint title.* Swansea Belmont has won five NSW Open Taplin Relay titles in the last 12 years.* Lisa Wright (Swansea Belmont) won her third consecutive Open and Under-19 Female Beach Flagsdouble in 2004. Including 2005, Wright has won four Open Beach Flagschampionships.* In 2004 Stephen Munnery (Kilcare) joined rugby league international Nick Yakich (North Narrabeen1961-1963), Darren Peters (Wollongong 1988-1990) and Kip McFarland (Mollymook 1994-1996) as theonly runners to win three consecutive NSW Open Beach Sprint titles. No one has won four straight in theevent.

2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDETOP OF THE STATE - 2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS ANALYSISDavid Lyall and David Moase look at the major contenders for 2006.IRONMAN & IRONWOMANOpen MaleCronulla’s Nathan Smith created history last year by becoming the first person to win four consecutiveNSW Ironman crowns. On his home beach, and also carrying the title of Australian champion, he is verymuch the man to beat. Smith, who was fourth in the World Interclub Titles after winning the National TeamsIronman title at Lorne a fortnight ago, is not over the line in his pursuit of a fifth title, however, and will bechallenged by the likes of clubmate Chris Allum, Daniel Shade from Avoca, Swansea Belmont’s JoshBlair, Maroubra’s Ben Squires, Reid Schofield of Terrigal and Bulli’s Drew Cairncross, Ben Allen andGregg Miller. Queenscliff teenager Matt Poole was a sensation at the Northern Beaches championships, winning both the Open and Under-19 events and could challenge the older competitors.Open FemaleNaomi Flood is the defending champion and her move down the sand from Queenscliff to Manly has donenothing to affect her form, with a stirring second to an unstoppable Kristy Munroe at the WorldChampionships in Lorne a fortnight ago. Flood, the Australian Under-19 champion, will be tough to beat, but it is anything but a foregone conclusion. Amanda Hey (Terrigal) won two years ago and was second toFlood last year so she will be determined to win back the crown. In an event where the standard ofcompetition seems to improve every year, there will be plenty of other contenders including Bulli’s BrittanySharkey and Nicole Sheedy, Candice Falzon of North Bondi, Flood’s Manly teammate EmmaSchneider, Hayley Condran of North Wollongong and Sawtell’s Courtney Hancock.Under-19 MaleA great showdown looms in this event, with an array of super young talents set to fight for the crown.Leading contenders include outstanding all-rounder David Smith of Warilla-Barrack Point, Queenscliff’sMatt Poole, Josh Minogue of Thirroul and Brendan Schofield of Terrigal. Others who can’t bediscounted are Shane Barrie (North Wollongong) and Hayden Allum (Wanda).Under-19 FemaleWith some of the big name competitors moving out of this division this year, it gives up and comers thechance to prove themselves. Courtney Hancock of Sawtell, who won the Under-17 title last year, has hada great season and looks set to play a big role in this event, along with the likes of Elyse Yardley (NorthWollongong), Meggie Helson (Shellharbour) and Cronulla’s Kristy May Morris, Peta Scanlon and KarlaAttwells. Arielle Bird of Queenscliff has been a consistent performer although is battling a knee injury, and her clubmate Emma Parsons can test anyone on her day.Under-17 MaleCollaroy’s Kendrick Louis led the charge for NSW at the Interstate titles and took the top prize at theInterbranch championships. Wade Love-Attard (Manly) and Ben Miller (Terrigal) filled the places at theInterbranch and will challenge again, while Jacob Lollback of Yamba will be back to defend the title hewon last year. Mitch Crow of Redhead, Kirk Gosper of Manly and Avoca Beach’s Liam Jackson couldalso find themselves in the mix.Under-17 FemaleThere isn’t much either Freshwater’s Alisha Miller or Swansea Belmont’s Kimberley Tapley haven’t wonthis year and it would surprise no-one to see one of the outstanding pair on top of the dais this week. Ifthey are to be upset, perhaps Sawtell’s Bonnie Hancock is the most likely as she attempts to grab the

2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDEcrown won by her older sister Courtney in 2005. Others to look out for are Kate Ebrill (Swansea Belmont),Hannah Walker (Wollongong City) and Rachel Crerar (Freshwater).Under-15 MaleMichael Booth of Redhead was a star at the Interstate carnival, winning the Ironman and looks a strongchance to do the same here. The Premiership winner will face tough competition from Queenscliff’s SaxonBird and Freshwater’s Luke Stirton, Terrigal’s Tim Schofield, Dean Mackay of Avoca Beach and JustinKing (North Wollongong).Under-15 FemaleLauren Davenport of Cronulla will have the luxury of defending her title on her home beach but facessome stiff competition. Kayla Russell (Sawtell) and Brooke Miller (Freshwater) are having strongseasons and will challenge closely, as will another Cronulla competitor, Jane Ware, and Laura Higgins(Redhead). Lauren Hall (MacMasters Beach) will lead the Central Coast challenge, while young EmilyChaffey won the Hunter Branch championship and could worry her older rivals.SURF RACEOpen MaleHome beach knowledge will be a big plus for Cronulla’s Nathan Smith, Chris Allum and Mark Simpsonand the rest of the field will keep a close eye on them from the first round. Allum won this crown last yearas an Under-19 competitor and probably starts as favourite after comfortably winning the NSW SurfPremiership and taking bronze behind Zane Holmes and Shannon Eckstein in the World ChampionshipSurf Race final, which saw clubmate Smith in fourth place. If the Surf Race crown is to leave the Shire,Ethan Whiteman (Manly) could be the man to take it after a series of consistent performances. Alwaysone of the most open carnival events, this title will also be a high priority for the likes of North Wollongong’sShane Barrie, Bronte veteran Mal Allen, Bulli’s Drew Cairncross and Matt Freeman, national Under-19champion Josh Minogue and Swansea Belmont’s Josh Blair.Open FemaleWorld Championship silver medallist from Lorne two weeks ago, Amanda White (Terrigal) and BrittanySharkey (Bulli) finished first and second in last year’s final and they are leading contenders yet again.Manly’s Naomi Flood will challenge strongly after splitting Sharkey and White at the Interbranch titles.Kristie Lee Ogilvie (North Bondi) showed last year she is still a force in these events. Others in this raceright up to their goggles are Terrigal’s Amanda Hey and Jessica Parr, Hayley Condran (NorthWollongong) and Emma Schneider (Manly), while Kimberley Tapley (Swansea Belmont) will lead thecharge of the younger competitors.BOARDOpen MaleDaniel Shade (Avoca Beach) got the better of Nathan Smith (Cronulla) last year and they probably arethe standouts in what should be hotly contested event, but if either slip up or get a bad break there areplenty of strong paddlers waiting to take advantage. Shade and Smith are among the form paddlers of theseason with the pair finishing second and third respectively to Shannon Eckstein at the WorldChampionship final in Lorne. Josh Blair (Swansea Belmont) has been a super consistent performer overmany years and will give himself every chance. Wollongong City youngster Dean Buttel broke the Bullistranglehold at the Illawarra Branch championships, edging out Drew Cairncross and Ben Allen. TimForan (Redhead) and Mark Bint (Swansea Belmont) will join Blair in a strong contingent from the HunterBranch, while Terrigal’s Schofield brothers, Brendan and Reid, have been strong all season. Cam

2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDECoghlan (Manly) won the Surf Premiership but was beaten out by Tom and Ben Atkinson (Queenscliff)for the Northern Beaches Branch title.Open FemaleEmma Schneider took home the prize last year and, now at Manly, will be a strong contender yet again. She is not the only Emma from the Northern Beaches with hopes this week, as Emma Parsons(Queenscliff) took out the NSW Premiership. Behind her in that competition were Brittany Sharkey (Bulli),Amanda Hey (Terrigal) and Cronulla’s Peta Scanlon and Karla Atwells, who also have strong chances.Nicole Sheedy (Bulli), Kate MacNamara (Avoca Beach), Lauren McKie (Collaroy), and Naomi Flood(Manly) are all good paddlers, while Katie Graham of Avoca Beach took the prize at the Interbranch andwill be looking to do so again.SINGLE SKIOpen MaleHeaps of entries and plenty of quality competitors make this an exciting and unpredictable event.Cronulla’s Nathan Steiner and Tony Schumacher will know the conditions better than anyone, whileNorth Bondi’s Luke Michael will be out to repeat last year’s triumph. Bulli’s Downie Langthorne (fourth inthe World Championship at Lorne) took the Interbranch title and won at Freshwater ahead of two otherstrong contenders, Manly’s Blake Ballard and Paul Tatham of North Bondi. The list of contenders seemsendless and any one of Byron Bay’s Kurt Tutt (third in the World Championships), Queenscliff’s Nick Holt,Redhead’s Peter Scott, Maroubra’s Glen Cowdrey, North Bondi’s Jake Michael and Freshwater’s JonoChalmers (fifth at Lorne) and Collaroy’s Scott Austin (sixth at Lorne) could come the out on top. Amongall that quality, watch out for young David Smith of Warilla-Barrack Point, who won the NSW Premiershipand could upstage them all.Open FemaleThis one could well be fought out by some of the leading Ironwoman contenders, such as Interstatechampion and 2006 World Championship runner-up Naomi Flood (Manly), Amanda Hey (Terrigal), KateMcNamara (Avoca Beach), Nicole Sheedy (Bulli) and Lauren McKie (Collaroy). North Curl Curl’s KimLow was last year’s winner and has a strong chance of making it a double after winning at the NorthCronulla carnival. North Wollongong’s Elyse Yardley was the NSW Premiership surprise packet, winningahead of Queenscliff’s Sonja Schleimer, while Terrigal’s Sally Turner also performed well in thePremiership.BEACH SPRINTOpen MaleWith NSW gold and Australian silver in his bag from 2005, Wanda’s Zane Campbell shapes as a strongcontender for a repeat triumph. The man he nudged out last year, Mollymook’s Glen Beveridge, has beenin hot form this season and took the Interbranch crown. The NSW Premiership was closely fought, withWamberal’s Drew Howell taking top prize narrowly from Gareth Nichols (Caves Beach) and Sean Riley(Wanda). Steve Hatch of Newport has had a very consistent season, as has Killcare’s Marcus Kain.Open FemaleDefending champion Ashley Cheney of Mollymook looks to have the strongest claims on this event afterher World Championship victory at Lorne. Add two consecutive Australian championships to her CV and anInterbranch win this season, Cheney will start a hot favourite. Five-time NSW champ and runner-up toCheney at Lorne, Kristy Smith (North Cronulla) will appreciate competing at home, as will Cronulla’s NickiJones. Look out for Anna Heasman (Caves Beach) who showed her quality by winning the NSW

2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDEPremiership. Flags champion Lisa Wright (Swansea Belmont) represented NSW in both beach events thisyear.BEACH FLAGSOpen MaleSwansea Belmont’s Jay Coburn deserves favouritism for this event after winning the Interbranch, HunterBranch, Manly and Freshwater carnivals. The Caves Beach contenders including NSW Premiership winnerMichael Waghorn, Daniel McGowan and Gareth Nichols have competed well, as has Andrew Fortis ofWamberal and the consistent Matt Palamara of Manly.Open FemaleSwansea Belmont’s Lisa Wright lines up for her fourth straight NSW Open title and her ninth State crownin all. Wright has been at her brilliant best again this season, winning the Interbranch and Interstate titlesbut suffered a rare defeat at the hands of Mollymook’s Melissa Howard at the World Championships inLorne. Those with the Herculean task of trying to beat the two best in the world are Premiership winnerSuzi Hibbins of Elouera, Manly’s Nicole Fullbrook and Cronulla’s Nicki Jones, Melissa Miles and LauraHammond and Queenscliff’s Laura Shorter.SURF BOATOpen MaleFreshwater, swept by Julian Delaney, is the State’s most consistent crew and have had a brilliant 2006so far, winning the Manly Carnival, the final round of the Red Rooster Premiership, the ASRL Open and theSydney Northern Beaches Branch Championships. Bulli ‘Gold’ (Paul Jones) however went one betterthan Freshwater to take out the NSW Premiership. World championship silver medallists Avoca Beach(Richard Brierty), Queenscliff (Matt Hamilton), Bungan Beach (Matt Collins), Wanda ‘Blue’ (TrevorRobson) and Coogee ‘A’ (Rodney Colman) have all shown good form throughout the season.Austinmer, swept by Jack Patison, are always competitive.Open FemaleTypically, clubs from the Sydney Northern Beaches Branch dominate this event and again this year theywill be favourites. Like in the Open Male event Queenscliff ‘Blue’ (Matt Hamilton) is expected to feature,as will World Champions Bilgola (Don McManus) and perennial placegetters South Curl Curl ‘Gold’,swept by Chris Flemming. South Curl Curl ‘Gold’ won the ASRL Open and finished second to Bilgola atthe World Championships at Lorne with a crew that includes kayaking dual-Olympian Yanda Nossiter.Avoca Beach ‘Zenith’ (Richard Brierty) and Austinmer ‘Blue’ (Jack Patison) have also been in goodform and come from solid boat rowing clubs. Redhead ‘A’ (Ben Neppl) was third in the NSW Premiershipbehind Queenscliff and Austinmer.Reserve GradeThis event is the biggest of the entire championships with more than 15 per cent of the total entrants in thecarnival. It is also one of the most open events and anything can, and usually does, happen. Austinmer‘Blue’ (Jack Patison), Bulli ‘Gold’ (Nigel Taylor) and Bilgola ‘Gold’ took the top three spots in the NSWPremiership while Collaroy ‘Spiders’ (Paul Booth), South Narrabeen ‘Boozers’ and Queenscliff ‘Blue’(Matt Hamilton) finished top three in the ASRL Open. The Wamberal ‘Hollywoods’ and any team fromhost clubs North Cronulla, Wanda and Elouera will be competitive.Under-21

2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDEBilgola ‘Dilligaf’ is the form crew in this division having won the NSW Premiership. They will face strongopposition from fellow Sydney Northern Beaches clubs South Narrabeen ‘Snappers’, Manly (DarrenBurke) and Palm Beach (Peter Spence), who were second in the ASRL Open. Once again JackPatison’s Austinmer crew has had a solid season, winning three of the four NSW Premiership rounds, while Wanda ‘Blue’ (Trevor Robson) could do well.Under-19MacMasters Beach ‘Gold’ (Michael Norman) has been one of the most consistent crews in any divisionin NSW this year. The Central Coast crew finished with two wins and two seconds in the NSWPremiership. Also in the running will be Bronte, Bilgola, Pacific Palms, Wanda, Austinmer, Gerringongand NSW Premiership runners-up Helensburgh-Stanwell Park ‘Red’.

SURF SPORTS DISCIPLINE EXPLANATIONS2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDEA surf lifesaving carnival as big as the State Titles is a busy spectacle that could be somewhatoverwhelming to the uneducated. But to the contrary, despite over 100 events taking place on each weekend the championships are veryspectator friendly and, with a quick explanation, quite easy to follow. The NSW Age Surf Life Saving Championships cater for boys and girls in age groups from Under-8 toUnder-14.Competitors in the NRMA Insurance NSW Surf Life Saving Championships are grouped into ages for Maleand Female in Under-15s, Under-17s, Under-19s, Under 21s (Surf Boats only), Restricted Over-24s (SurfRace only), Open and Masters (Over-30s to Over-65s).They all compete in a range of Beach and Water eventsBEACH EVENTSMarch PastJudged on timing and correctness is the most traditional of all surf lifesaving events, the March Past.Oftenthe domain of the more senior members of a surf club, the March Past is synonymous with bag pipes andcolourful flags and costumes. It is made up of 12-member teams with standard bearers and includes Open,Under-21 and Age divisions. It has always been the traditional surf carnival showcase and the carnivalstops for the March Past.Beach Sprint/Beach Sprint RelayBeach Sprint is perhaps the most simple of all events for it is a matter of getting to the end of an eight lanesand track faster than the next competitor. The Beach Relay is for teams of four runners who transfer abaton after each completing one leg of the Beach Sprint course.Beach FlagsThe last of the beach events is the Beach Flags, which is run over a shorter distance and is similar inconcept to ‘Musical Chairs’ and was originally known as ‘Musical Flags’. Competitors lie face down on thesand with their feet closest to the pieces of rubber hose, or ‘flags’, positioned in the sand a short sprintaway. Once the starting whistle is blown competitors must rise to their feet, turn to face the flags and thenensure they are able to capture a flag. As in the Musical Chairs, there will be one flag less than there iscompetitors, thus ensuring one competitor is eliminated each round until a winner is decided.WATER EVENTSSurf Race/TeamsThe Surf Race is a swimming event that starts on the beach and sees competitors round a string ofmarker buoys or ‘cans’ before returning to the beach and finishing with a sprint to the line. The Surf Teamsevent is made up of four members who all swim at the same time with their finishing place used toaccumulate a team score.Rescue and Resuscitation (R&R)The R&R competition is one of the more traditional events at a surf carnival. It involves two, five or sixperson teams performing a simulated rescue drill that is judged on the precision of each team’s actions.

2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDESurf BeltIn the same area are belt races for Under-19 and Open competitors which, like R&R, is performed usingthe reel, line and belt. They are made up of five man teams – a belt swimmer, three linesmen and areelman. The gun start signals the teams to run from the shore line to pick up their reel with the swimmer,or ‘beltman’, jumping into the belt and the reel party carries the reel down the beach. The beltmen areassigned individual buoys and signal their arrival raising one arm above their head after touching theirbuoy.Rescue Tube/Rescue Tube RescueThere are rescue tube events for senior competitors, where a swimmer will, similar to a belt race, place hisor her arm through the shoulder strap of the tube and swim to their designated buoys and raise his or herhand. The Under-19 and Opens are two person events whereby a “patient” is dropped behind thedesignated buoy and the rescuer swims out and places the tube around the patient. The rescuer then towsthe patient back to shore and the event is complete when the pair crosses the start/finish line.Ironman/IronwomanThe ultimate challenge for an individual are the Ironman and Ironwoman. In Open and Under-19 events for males and Open events for females, competitors complete threerandomly drawn water legs - surf, board and ski – with a torturous run leg at the end of each. The eventusually takes around twelve minutes but can often take over twenty if the surf is at its toughest. For the younger ages and for juniors there is some respite, with the ski leg not part of the event but thatsometimes just means the pace is hotter.Surf Craft/RelaysBoard and ski races are similar although each has a separate set of different coloured ‘cans’ for athletes toround with the board longer than the surf race, and the ski longer still. There are also board the board relay and ski relay, three-member team events that are conducted as arelay.Another popular water event for all ages is the board rescue which is a two-person team which requires aswimmer and a board paddler. Each team is assigned a beach and buoy position. The swimmers race totheir assigned buoy and they signal for their board paddler to leave the beach. Once the board paddlerrounds the buoy, the pair paddle to the beach together. It simulates a board rescue.Probably the most prestigious team event to win is the Taplin Relay. It is often used to gauge the depth ofthe strongest clubs and is super competitive, not only within the heat of battle but sometimes before therace even starts with competitors striving for the honour of being selected in their club’s team. The race involves two swimmers, two board paddlers and two ski paddlers who all complete a similarcourse to the one they raced over in the surf, board and ski events. While the disciplines are coupledtogether the order of the event is randomly drawn before the carnival making for a six-leg relay lottery. The juniors, as well as the Under-15 and Under-17s, have a modified event known as the Cameron Relay, which is made up of a swimmer, a board paddler and a beach sprinter). An extension of the Taplin Relay is the Lifesaver Relay which is made up of one swimmer, one ski paddler, one board paddler, one boat crew and one beach sprinter – and in case of the NSW Championship clubsmust provide at least one female competitor and one Under-19. These are among the most exciting eventsof the Championships.

2006 NSW SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS – MEDIA GUIDEBoard RidingBoard riding display events are also very popular, and in recent years a malibu (longboard) event has beenadded, with winners judged similar to major surf board riding events.Surf BoatsThe surf boat races are all about power, strength and fitness. There are five divisions for the ‘boaties’ –Open, Female, Reserve Grade, Under-21s and Under-19s.A surf boat crew consists of four rowers and a sweep. The rowers sit on alternate sides of the boat andeach pull one oar with two arms while the sweep stands at the back of the boat and steers. On the row outthe sweep is also the only member who can see the waves approaching as his or her crew heads out tosea – a perilous and thankless job – but on the return the crew has a bird’s eye view of what is looming outthe back! Each crew starts on the waters edge and rows out around their designated turning ‘can’ before proceedingback to the beach through a set of ‘gate cans’. Not only is each crew trying to win the race but they mustensure they stay upright. Capsizing means immediate disqualification and often a heartbreaking end tomonths and months of hard work.Lifesaving EventsThere are events to determine the Champion Lifesaver and Champion Patrol Team.Champion Lifesaver competitors must complete a surf race, tube race, beach sprint, board as well asresuscitation and patient assessment and a theory paper. In the Champion Patrol Team competition, teams are made up of up to six competitors who must completesimilar physical tasks as a team, similar in format to the Champion Lifesaver but teams also have tocomplete an assimilated rescue scenario. There are also First Aid competitions for all age groups where two-man teams have to perform simulatedfirst aid on patients who have had anything from cramps, bluebottle stings to shark attacks.
