Parent/Teacher interviews have been had, reports areout and the winter sport program is finished.Key staff are now reviewing report cards andmeeting with students who need support incontinuing to excel or in getting on the roadto improvement. Please do not hesitate tomake contact if you are concerned or curiousabout your son’s progress.CommunityA key characteristic of a Catholic school inthe Edmund Rice Tradition is the creation ofcommunity through partnerships. At the lasttwo assemblies we have seen a wonderfularray of examples of partnerships betweenstudents, students and staff, students andparents and parents and staff. This has beenexhibited through the presentation ofacademic medals, music performances,mooting success, spirit gee ups from theseniors and presentation of GPS sportingteams. It takes a village to raise a child andNudgee is no small village – thank you toeveryone who continues to enter into thepartnerships which are needed at Nudgee.Over the past three weeks in my new role Ihave met with dozens of parents and theirsons across a range of issues and I have beenhumbled by the trust, honesty and sinceritydemonstrated and shared in these meetingsover sometimes difficult topics and issues.Pastoral partnerships between teachers,students, House Tutors, House Deans, Headsof Boarding House and other roles at theschool are vital in creating the community wewish to be and become.Athletics Day and Big BrekkieParticipation and co-operation were fantasticat the Athletics Day. I was also happy that
very few issues in relation to security came up.Thank you to everybody who followeddirections and instructions to make this a greatday. Then last Friday we had our Big BrekkieFree Dress Day to support our program forfeeding Brisbane’s homeless. Coupled with oursupport for the Street Swag Program which isproviding warmth for over 10,000 homeless,this program and the others we run like it, is animportant part of our formation plan for yoursons. The opportunity to do good for othersthrough action is a heart changing experience. Icommend the fellows involved most sincerely.Driving to SchoolThis is a privilege for Year 12 students only.Year 11 students who have a licence are not todrive onto the school property please. Year 12students may only do so having met with MrMartin Wiseman and their parents.Ekka HolidayWith the Ekka holiday coming up it becomesobvious as to how many of our students lovethis time of year. It is great that so manyfellows are involved in this importantQueensland event. However, experience hasalso shown me that this is a difficult time forsome students in making good decisions.Parents, please support us by speaking withyour son/s about appropriate behaviour inrelation to attending the Ekka and the publicholiday in general.Years 5-7 Co-ordinatorSian KennedyOur Year 5-7 activities are gatheringmomentum and the boys are all enjoying theirsquash, golf, athletics and chess. Last week alsosaw the first debate for our Year 6 and Year 7teams. The Year 6 team spoke for the negativeon the debate ‘School teachers should wearuniforms’, and the Year 7 team spoke for theaffirmative on the debate ‘We should lower thelegal voting age to 16’. Both debates werekeenly fought and our teams lost by 1 pointeach. This was a new venture for all our boysand they are to be congratulated on their fineefforts. They have built a strong foundationupon which to grow and represented theCollege admirably. Our thanks to Ms ClaireJuratowitch and Mr Luke Thomas for their hardwork in preparing the boys.This week Mr Brian O’Reilly, on the invitationof Christian Davies in Year 6, came to talk tothe boys about the street swag program andshow the boys how to roll the swags. The boysare keen to become involved in thiscommendable and valuable program and arepreparing to have a go at rolling the swagsthemselves!It was wonderful to see so many Year 5-7 boysattending the exciting Home fixtures lastweekend. Their support of the older boys wasadmirable. I would just like to remind everyonethat all boys should wear their full schooluniform when attending Home games.Director of BoardingJohn BussenschuttHello EveryoneI do hope you are all well. Week 3 has endedand very successfully in terms of NudgeeRugby. All players and officials are to becongratulated, none more so than theBoarding students involved in teams. Thefamilies of these boys who are able to attendand support their sons and the Nudgee teamsare to be commended, especially thoseparents who travel great distances each week.I urge you all to spare a thought for theparents who are unable, due to distance, to bepresent at their son’s games. I would alsolike to take the opportunity to commend theNudgee Boarders for the way they havesupported the main game each week. I wouldalso like to thank the Senior Boarding Staffwho assisted and supported the boys eachweekend.Post RugbyI would like your assistance in encouragingyour sons to participate in sporting activitiesnow that the Rugby/Football season hasconcluded. AFL, Basketball, Tennis, Rowing,Swimming and Athletics are all sports onoffer. If you have any queries regardingactivities for the remainder of the term pleasecontact your son’s Head of Boarding House.ICPA Federal ConferenceI attended the Isolated Children’s Parents’Association Federal Conference held this yearin Hobart. Needless to say, it was extremelycold. The conference saw representativesfrom all over Australia attend, includingSenior Staff from many Boarding Schools.Queensland schools attending includedFairholme, St Peter’s Lutheran, Downlandsand Nudgee. As a leading Boarding School itis important for Nudgee College to haverepresentatives attend. The issues confrontingrural and remote Education are extremelyimportant and ongoing. The Conference wasopened by the Premier of Tasmania, the HonDavid Bartlett MP and a number of Guestspeakers presented valuable informationwhich included new Communications fromTelstra Country Wide from Mr Geoff Booth(Group Managing Director), LibraryResources from Queensland State LibrarianMs Lea Giles Peters and Tertiary informationfrom Professor Peter Lee from the Universityof South Australia.On the agenda for strong discussion weremotions that covered the following:Communications; transport and fuel costs;student allowances including tertiary, youthand apprenticeships; Early Childhoodeducation and travel allowances.There was concern expressed from somequarters about Boarding Schools offeringplaces to overseas students at the expense ofwhat has been regarded as traditionalboarders from country Australia.All Boarding schools need to remaineconomically viable and therefore strive tohave balance by capping numbers of overseasstudents, ensuring the culture and experienceis Australian including language and culture.Nudgee Boarding is Australian Boarding atits best and would ensure places forAustralian remote and rural students wishingto join its Boarding Community.Mr Jack Beach former President of FederalCouncil ICPA, spoke at the end of theConference about the importance of the ICPAas a lobby group to work with larger groupssuch as the Farmers’ Federation in order toensure its needs are addressed.Touch Footy SuccessFive Touch Footy teams set off on Sunday 3August to play against other schools in aTouch Footy Competition as part of theBoarder Activities. The Year 9 teamconsisted of: Mullie Watson (Captain), JustinTipuka, Daniel Hohoa, Breadly Simon,Robert Paterson, Irin Thomas, GrahamHohoa, Darrell Iewago, Ninad Joglekar,Clinton Holroyd and Bradley Makap weresuccessful in winning the U/15 championshipagainst Marist Ashgrove. Many thanks to MrKevin Sargent for organising this activity andfor transporting the boys.Defining MomentsOn Sunday evening after Mass, I spoke to theBoarders about defining moments in theirschool year. I can recall moments, as we allcan, where I know exactly where I was at thetime, or a year by something specialhappening eg. 1969 – Landing on the Moon,’71 matriculating/acceptance to Uni, ‘74Cyclone Tracey, 2002 Sept 11 and so on.The final First XV match on Saturday,snatching the win away from Ipswich will forsome boys, be a defining moment that marks2008 for them. The boys who earned thatsuccess, the First XV, deserve the praise forthe work they and their coaches put in beforeand during the season. I reminded the boys atMass that they too can enjoy the success ofsuch defining moments by putting in the hardyards now.
