We have considered an opening date for the building but are anxious to ensure that the“personality“ of this building has been truly established prior to such an event. Treacywill house the College Administration as well as the College Museum and the WallabiesMuseum. To ensure that there is a sense of history and indeed story throughout thisbuilding, a small committee has been established to select and appropriately placeicons, paintings, effigies etc.We look forward to advising you in the near future when we will officially open thiswonderful testament to the past and symbol for the future.I wish every one of you a Holy Easter as we celebrate the Risen Christ.Chris ryandean of identitySt Joseph’s Nudgee Collegerequests prayers for:Those who are ill at this time:• Mr Gary Merritt (staff member)• Mr Laurie Nugent (Father andGrandfather of NCOBs Paul, Peter,Michael, Greg, and Quentin Nugent)Those who are recently deceased:• David Rossberg (NCOB 1996)A Nudgee College mum popped in to say hello the other day. She and her family havehad a rough time lately. We had a great chat about what has been happening andhow things are going. I wasn’t surprised to hear that along with some tears there isplenty of laughter and positivity. The thing that struck me most was her sense of hope.I know that she and her husband have instilled this sense of hope in their children. Howfortunate they are.Later in the day I was on pick up duty at the O’Neill Building. Big Year 5 blokes in theirsecond term at Nudgee College shuffled by trying to hold their bags and hats andprojects together. I have been on leave for Term 1 after almost 20 years at NudgeeCollege and one fellow trundled up on his way to the family car and said “Hi Sir, youare the new guy aren’t you ?” I said, “Well, yes, to you I am !” We had a yarn about thefirst term, he hit the highlights and off he went. I have been thinking about how I reallycould be ‘new’ ever since, so thanks mate. How fortunate I am.On Tuesday night, we welcomed back some of our Seniors from their Kairos Retreat.Without exception, these guys are buzzing with the good news that they are lovedand known. This sacred time is a spirit quake that lowers defences, removes masks andopens hearts. It is a vulnerable time but many of these young men have never felt morealive. How fortunate they are.Among the flurry of emails I received this week was one from a lifelong teacher at NudgeeCollege who announced that “all is right in the world, the footy posts are up on Ross!” Tohim it means community, participation and joy. Signs and symbols are significant andwe ignore the good ones too often. It is important that we read and interpret symbolsto enrich the meaning in our lives. My teacher friend is great at making and sharing themeaning of this with others. How fortunate he is.Lately, I have come home at night and my three little girls have been telling me aboutwhat happened when Jesus died and rose again. Each dinner I have heard the nextinstalment. I have learned about the Romans, Judas, Peter, Pilate, Simon, Veronicaand Mary. I have had drawings, freeze frames and stories. Their eyes have been filledwith wonder as they wrap their heads around this story of hope, new life, love and thebeautiful symbolism of the Cross. It is Easter time. How fortunate we are.2 ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE NEWSLETTER 21 APRIL 2011 | Volume 34 | NO 11

Mr Richard Goyder, CEO of Wesfarmers and chair ofScotch College Council, Perth and Mr John Anderson, former Deputy Prime Ministerof Australia. While each have vastly different journeys through religious life, corporateleadership and public service it was the threads of commonality in their message thatproved most interesting and thought provoking. The role of the family in schools, particularly the engagement of fathers, the importance of teaching and encouraging astrong faith life and the values that are inherent in that, and a school community witha strong and clearly articulated identity and mission, that you are faithful to. The seriesof lectures and workshops was epistemological as well as personally refreshing and Ilook forward to sharing the learning not just with the student formation teams whichincludes boarding and our counselling areas, but also to our students and parentsthrough our houses. On a more everyday matter it would seem that a very small number of boys have notquite heard the message about public transport behaviour. I received a wonderfullydetailed email from a member of the public regarding some bullying which she observedon the train. While very disappointed that such behaviour occurred, I am very gratefulthat it was brought to the College’s attention. Action in line with our College’s behaviourmanagement and bullying guidelines has been enacted but without knowledge ofsuch events we are unable to act and the scourge and sadness associated with suchbehaviour has an opportunity to take hold. That said, I have been very pleased with thepositive reports I also receive and observe myself. Our recent Year 7 rugby tourists toArmidale were wonderful ambassadors for the College. With their play and behaviourimpeccable, from the bus trip to the dorm rooms to the playing field, each boy wasoutstanding. Similarly, reports from each of our weekend sporting venues at Churchieand TSS have been excellent with the 13s and 14s leading the way and truly reinforcingour reputation. But sadly a good reputation takes years to build and only one poorchoice to destroy.College House ShowcaseAdvanced notice of the annual House Showcase! Senior students, House prefects andHouse Deans are busily beginning to select songs for this year’s extravaganza. Again wewill be looking to showcase our College music talent and rock bands in between Houseperformances. For those new to the College it is a great night of fun and enjoymentand many houses do have small functions beforehand. There is a sausage sizzle for allfamilies as well. Performance practice begins in SF, PCs and House Assemblies fromWeek 4.Transport Services This WeekIt would be remiss of me not to thank Mr Trevor Dawes for his work in organising busesthis week. As you may know through media reports, Translink decided to cancel allschool bus services through this week. With the help of Trevor we were able to speakwith the Brisbane City Council and have all services continue to run, admittedly at acost, but with the assistance of the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC)and Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) these costs will be minimised.4 ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE NEWSLETTER 21 APRIL 2011 | Volume 34 | NO 11

It proved to be another good, solid fixture for the boys with plenty ofopportunity for coaches and players to experiment whilst at the same time consolidatingtheir new team structures. The overall results were 7 victories, 2 draws and 9 losses. Each school entered three teams in each age group playing half a game againstChurchie and then half a game against TSS. As expected all games were very competitiveand gave players and coaches some excellent feedback on where we are at. Our D, E, Fand G teams continued their trialling process with internals at Nudgee College.1st XV played their two halves at Suncorp Stadium before the Reds v Bulls game. Thiswas a great experience for the 22 players and I think we all learnt plenty from the night. The first half Churchie won 13–12 and then we beat TSS in the second half 17–7. I thinkall three schools were happy with the hit out.CROSS COUNTRY Trainingtimes – term 2• Monday – 6.15am• Tuesday – 3.15pm• Wednesday – 3.15pm• Thursday – 6.15am• Friday – 6.15amAll welcome.Enquires to Mrs Maureen TooheyTeam of the week honours a team from each age group that exemplifies the NudgeeCollege spirit, sportsmanship and the standard of competing to your absolute best. In the first half NC took on a bigger Churchieside. Churchie’s size did not faze the young Nudgee College men - with strongball carries from William Gardner and Joseph Crackett creating space for backsEdward Gardner and Hayden Rowlands. In Nugdee College’s second half theyoung men took on a fresh TSS outfit. Nudgee College started the second halflike they finished the first half, full of strong ball carries and straight running fromthe backs. Special mention must go to Jack Cross’s harassing defence at opensideflanker and the great work by inside backs Beau McLean and Joshua Kieser fortheir direction and straight lines in attack which conserved space for their outsidebacks.• 16Cs – Were the pick of the U16 age group with two impressive wins againstSouthport and Churchie.
