I would like you togive some time to the reviewing and resetting of goals with your sons. Take sometime, also to reflect upon, and speak about what the College Mission Statementmeans to them as young members of our community. Ask how their goals align withthe College Mission.Mission StatementInspiring young men to live justly, igniting In them faith, compassion and love of learning. We are members of the St Joseph’s Nudgee College community founded by theChristian Brothers to provide an education for the development of the whole person. We celebrate our diversity and work together to create an environment where everyperson is respected. We encourage our young men to strive in the spiritual, academic, social, personal, cultural, and sporting aspects of life. Faithful to the vision of EdmundRice, we hold a special concern to act justly and with compassion, especially towardsthose most in need. For over a century, our College community has been based onCatholic faith, service to others, loyalty and friendship in day and boarding contexts. In Jesus our Brother, we are determined in our struggle to uphold, communicate andnurture the values of the Gospel. Our goal is that each member of our communitywill become for the world a Sign of Faith – Signum Fidei. To add an extra depth to this discussion, reflect with your sons on the meaning tothem – in action – of the College Prayer, penned by the Year 12 students in 2002.Teach me, my GodThrough your Gospel valuesHow to aim for the bestAnd never be content with mediocrity.Give me enough courageTo choose what is rightAnd despise pettiness.Make me strong and braveIn my heart and actions,Having pride in myself.‘Remember we are but travellers here’!St Mary of the Cross 1875Guide me, my GodTo shun all selfishnessWhile I must face up toResponsibilities.Help me live for others,Have respect for all peopleAnd be loyal to friends.continued overleaf

For further details visit the website.Digital RevolutionLast year I wrote an article emphasising the importance of technology to the deliveryof a twenty-first century education. The integration of technology into the curriculumcreates a significant demand for computer access across the entire campus in almostevery curriculum area. We are determined, however, to develop and implement atechnology plan that makes the most effective and efficient use of the best computerhardware available to us.We have made a bold move to ignore the popular trend of investing in the nowtraditional 1:1 laptop program. Laptop programs, by their very nature, increase theburdens and responsibilities on the students, teachers and support staff. Possibly thebiggest challenge facing the College, however, is the unpredictable nature of computerhardware. Research suggests any reliability issues can create a mistrust of technology inthe minds of students, an outcome completely at odds with our stated aims.We are continuing to uphold our commitment to provide the best possible digitalservices to the boys. We are now in the process of implementing alternative models ofdigital integration and laptop deployment across the College, beginning last week inthe library in a move which effectively doubled the number of computers available tostudents. In addition to this development, we are in the process of incorporating iPadsinto reading and literacy instruction as a means of engaging students in the readingprocess and to promote the achievement of established learning outcomes.Additionally we are currently working towards adopting a hybrid model that will:• double the devices in the College Library, make them NetBooks;• create a second graphics lab;• create a full Art lab (Macs);• ensure all boarders have a device;• install 7 “class sets” functioning as mobile laptop labs where the school has cartsor classroom bays of 10 to 25 laptops which teachers utilise in their classrooms;• provide the Year 9 Core classes will have a bank of mobile devices to accessThere are a number of benefits to this model, the most obvious, yet the most far reaching,is the quite simple fact that instead of students going to the lab, the lab comes to them.Teachers can teach in their own classrooms and use technology as a servant, not amaster of their pedagogy. This flexibility frees up rooms formerly used as computer labsand allows students to work more collaboratively with more versatile devices.ICAS 2011 - International Competitions and Assessments for SchoolsEach year the University of New South Wales Testing Centre conducts a range ofcompetitions in Australia, New Zealand and Asia in the areas of Computer Skills, Science,English, Writing, Mathematics and Spelling, called the International Competitions andAssessments for Schools (ICAS).You may nominate your son if you would like him to participate in some or all of thesecompetitions. As muchas the long weekends are well received and enjoyable times it is certainly difficult to getback into solid teaching and study routines. As a guide I would refer you to the StudentRecord Book in regard to homework and study expectations which appear on page 20. Iwould particularly like to reference the section titled “The Art of Studying – Steps 1 – 8”.It is essential that boys realise homework is actually a very small part of the job and asthey get older there is less ‘teacher directed’ work set and the individual becomes themain driver of homework, study and review. As summary for all boys from our youngest in Year 5 to our Seniors, homework andstudy needs to have a few core elements:1. The content must both review work and look to preview future topics2. The process is one of activity – pen, paper, laptop, note taking, flash card generation, written recall, closed text recall, practice3. The process must be organised– at a micro level (pens, books, notepads)– at a macro level (a weekly study and assignment timetable)Finally, in any great endeavour or achievement we stand on the shoulder of others.Academic achievement even more so – parents, siblings and teachers are importantresources for our boys so encourage your sons to use these people often and wisely.College DanceOur College Dance is being held on the evening of Friday 20 May for Years 9-11 boysand girls (not Year 8 as appears in the College calendar). All boys, and girls frominvited schools, will be required to bring current school identification. The Dance isprofessionally supervised by security guards, Police and College Staff and is always anenjoyable social occasion. Parents are welcome to assist in supervision if they would liketo contact me at the College.House ShowcaseMonday evening 23 May is the College Inter-house Showcase. It is the schools biggestone night event and a great night of fun for all. Ask your son over the next few days whatsong he is performing and feel free to learn the words so that you can sing a long on thenight. Who knows - we may even look to putting in a special parents item on the night!World’s Biggest Driving LessonA big thankyou to all those boys who participated on Wednesday in the world’s largestdriving lesson. It was an excellent road safety initiative and one that we are very happywe were able to offer our young men. It is hoped that more such opportunities may beavailable in the future.5 ST JOSEPH’S NUDGEE COLLEGE NEWSLETTER 5 May 2011 | Volume 34 | NO 13

The time has now arrived where we find ourselvesback in the normal routine of school, trainings, homework and study. Please encourageyour sons to continue to make use of the generous teachers who are now a critical partof the boarding landscape. Whilst the teachers are there to help boys achieve to theirpotential, the boys must still take responsibility for their learning. Please reinforce thismessage with your sons and encourage them to always commit themselves to qualityand genuine learning, both in the class room and in their study sessions at night.Heads of Boarding Houses have been busy reading through the boarder’s reports tosee how they have been progressing and to evaluate if we need to provide any moresupport or a change in the way study is structured. Some boys might find they will bespoken to about their effort and also the way they study.
