Teachersof <strong>the</strong> Forensic Scienceprogram, Mrs. Woleslagle, Ms.Pastushok, and Ms. Vieiraattended conferences withworld renowned forensicscientists, <strong>the</strong> Eastern AnalyticalChemistry Symposium inSomerset, NJ and at a guestlecture appearance at DwightEnglewood <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. At <strong>the</strong>EACS, Dr. Saperstein discussednew techniques in analyzingDNA evidence. At DwightEnglewood, Dr. Lee from <strong>the</strong>University of New Haven,discussed evidence collectionand pro<strong>to</strong>col in <strong>the</strong> OJ Simpsontrial. Our forensic scienceteachers are excited <strong>to</strong> sharewith <strong>the</strong>ir students <strong>the</strong>ir newknowledge and insight.With <strong>the</strong> leadership of Mrs.Helen Coyle and Dr. RobertKennedy, students in <strong>the</strong>Science Research program havehad <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> learnfrom several guest speakersand from an enriching trip <strong>to</strong>Stryker. Guest speakersinclude a <strong>Tenafly</strong> alum thatspoke <strong>to</strong> students about hiscareer in <strong>the</strong> bioengineeringfield, a <strong>Tenafly</strong> parent, Dr. IrinaSekerina of CUNY, shared herresearch on eye tracking and<strong>the</strong> acquisition of multiplelanguages and effects on <strong>the</strong>brain, and ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Tenafly</strong>parent, Dr. Bornstein, discussed<strong>the</strong> process of conductingclinical trials for pharmaceuticalcompanies. In addition,students in <strong>the</strong> scienceresearch program and <strong>the</strong> APPhysics program visited Strykerlast week. Students met wi<strong>the</strong>ngineers on <strong>the</strong> artificial kneeand hip implant teams as wellas scientists in <strong>the</strong> materialsdevelopment department and<strong>the</strong> clinical researchdepartment. Several collegeinterns enthusiastically address<strong>the</strong> group giving studentsinsight in<strong>to</strong> college andinternship experiences.Mrs. Helen Coyle and six of herAP Physics students attendedan American Association ofPhysics Teachers conference atBergen Community College onSaturday, November 10 th .Attendees were wowed by afantastic presentation aboutnew research in astronomy.Professor Frederik Simons ofPrince<strong>to</strong>n University discussedweighing <strong>the</strong> Earth from spaceand listening <strong>to</strong> earthquakesfrom within <strong>the</strong> oceans andProfessor Andrew Baker ofRutgers University whodiscussed dusty galaxies andputting <strong>the</strong> Physics inAstrophysics. Students alsovisited <strong>the</strong> observa<strong>to</strong>ry at BCC.3Chemistry teachers have beendeveloping new demonstrationsfor <strong>the</strong>ir classes. Mrs. GraceWoleslagle attended a “kitchenchemistry” lecture at EACS andbrought back many excitinglabs and demonstrations. In<strong>the</strong> picture below, Mrs.Woleslagle makes a pickle glowyellow by introducing anelectrical charge. By changing<strong>the</strong> salt solutions that <strong>the</strong>cucumbers were pickled in,students were able <strong>to</strong> see howdifferent chemicals emitdifferent wavelengths of light.World Languages<strong>Tenafly</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> hasreceived congratulations forhaving a national award winneron <strong>the</strong> National SpanishExamination in 2012. MayShum, a junior, was awarded<strong>the</strong> 2012 Global CitizenScholarship, which provided herwith <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> spendtwo weeks at <strong>the</strong> Concordia


persuasive writing. This wasfollowed by reading about andgiving examples of facts vs.opinions.Special EducationTeachers have emailed homeIEP Progress Reports for <strong>the</strong>first quarter. These reports arefilled out by teachers <strong>the</strong>ngenerated electronically usingIEP Direct, <strong>the</strong> district's webbasedstudent managementprogram, based on <strong>the</strong>anniversary date of <strong>the</strong> IEP.Teachers worked in grade levelteams with <strong>the</strong> new CommonCore State Standards Initiativein English Language Arts,Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, and 6-12 Literacyin His<strong>to</strong>ry/Social Studies,Science, and TechnicalSubjects, as <strong>the</strong>y relate <strong>to</strong>Study Skills and AcademicSupport.The Transition Task Force heldits first meeting in order <strong>to</strong>discuss transition and postsecondaryservices for ourstudents, <strong>to</strong> share currentpractice and <strong>to</strong> begin <strong>to</strong> exploreexpanding our array ofofferings.Visual ArtsMs. Pacheco's students in 3-DDesign class offered <strong>the</strong>irsculptures <strong>to</strong> teachers ando<strong>the</strong>r staff members. This was<strong>the</strong>ir way of spreading artaround <strong>the</strong> school building.They guaranteed that <strong>the</strong> wokswere creative and colorful andwould brighten classrooms.Her Art Experience classescreated con<strong>to</strong>ur drawings ofcommon objects in differentangles. They experimentedwith <strong>the</strong> arrangement ofobjects <strong>to</strong> create a compositionof six objects of varying sizesand angles.Ms. Nagel's Portfolio Honorsstudents drew <strong>the</strong> clo<strong>the</strong>dfigure within a background so<strong>the</strong> figure would look real andsolid. In order <strong>to</strong> grasp <strong>the</strong>importance of analyzing aparticular pose and drawing itsessential features <strong>the</strong> studentsdrew ten different three minuteposes. When completed <strong>the</strong>sedrawings made for additionalones for 15 minutes taking abreak every five minutesmarking <strong>the</strong> spot with tape.With <strong>the</strong>se poses, studentswere still looking for <strong>the</strong>essential features of <strong>the</strong> pose,but developing <strong>the</strong> drawingsfur<strong>the</strong>r and including some of<strong>the</strong> suggestions of background.In AP Studio Art, <strong>the</strong> studentsobserved and developed eight<strong>view</strong>s that construct asequential passage fromoutdoors <strong>to</strong> indoors or reverse.They hung up <strong>the</strong> eight pieces<strong>to</strong> complete five drawingsconcentrating on <strong>the</strong>composition, eliminateunessential details and createmovement through spaceselecting <strong>view</strong>s that make astrong transition from wideopen space <strong>to</strong> close up space.Ms. Kirschbaum’s ComputerGraphics have been busydesigning <strong>the</strong> cover for <strong>the</strong>2013-2014 <strong>Tenafly</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>Program of Studies. The <strong>the</strong>mewas <strong>to</strong> include <strong>the</strong> tiger, <strong>the</strong>THS mascot. Students alsocreated art from Icons. They<strong>to</strong>ok pictures of barcodes andincorporated <strong>the</strong>m in<strong>to</strong> aunique work of art. HerComputer Animation Honorsstudents have been shootingmultiple clips and merging <strong>the</strong>m5<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> create a “splitscreen” effect. Ms. Kirschbaumprovided students with aniPhone mount for <strong>the</strong>ir tripods.They set up <strong>the</strong>ir tripod and<strong>to</strong>ok pictures of one or moremembers of each team so <strong>the</strong>yappeared multiple times in <strong>the</strong>same shot.BusinessMr. Hiler’s Business Law classdiscussed white-collar andbusiness crimes. Studentstested <strong>the</strong>ir debate skills in amock trial using plaintiff anddefendant "ac<strong>to</strong>rs" with a preselected<strong>to</strong>pic. T<strong>here</strong> was a"jury of students posing andanswering questions. HisBusiness Economics studentsfocused on <strong>the</strong> law of demand.Students interpreted anddistinguished between ademand curve and a demandschedule. Once given <strong>the</strong>necessary data, studentsworked in teams <strong>to</strong> draw ademand curve on <strong>the</strong> SmartBoard. Then <strong>the</strong> whole classanalyzed <strong>the</strong> students-drawndemand curves. Mr. Hiler'sAccounting I class studentsapplied concepts of cash flowand control <strong>to</strong> real businesssituations. The watched videoclips from "Shark Tank" whichaddressed cash controlconcerns.Mr. Alesandro's Personal &Financial Literacy studentsfocused on <strong>the</strong> concepts ofrenting and ownership. Theydiscussed <strong>the</strong> true cost ofownership. This was followedby a discussion on <strong>the</strong> dangersof debt. His Accounting IIHonors class prepared abalance sheet for a business onexcel. They also preparedadjusting entries and closing


Technology EducationThe Inventions, design &Technology students areworking on <strong>the</strong> ToshibaExploraVision Project. Studentsare working with teammembers <strong>to</strong> identify a problemthat should be solved in 20years. Students performed ananalysis of <strong>the</strong> problem byfinding <strong>the</strong> constraints placedon <strong>the</strong>ir design. Theyresearched <strong>the</strong> problem byfinding background informationand brains<strong>to</strong>rmed alternativedesign solutions that areconceptual and abstract. Theymodeled <strong>the</strong> best solution bydiscussing <strong>the</strong> pros/con of eachalternative solution. Studentsdecided on <strong>the</strong> best solutionand developed it.The drafting students used aCAD system <strong>to</strong> draw a single<strong>view</strong> technical drawing. Theydiscussed <strong>the</strong> differencebetween a single <strong>view</strong> drawingand a perspective drawing.They also used <strong>the</strong> standardconventions for hand drafting asingle <strong>view</strong> of a physical object.Physical EducationTeen PEP 2012Teen PEP has wrapped up astrong first half of <strong>the</strong> year. InSeptember Teen PEP receivedand Exemplary rating from <strong>the</strong>Prince<strong>to</strong>n Center for LeadershipTraining. To quote, “ProgramAssessment, which details <strong>the</strong>measures employed <strong>to</strong> assessprograms. Your program hasreceived 10 out of ten possiblepoints and has successfully metall program requirements for<strong>the</strong> 2011-2012 academic years.As such, your program isdesignated as Exemplary.Congratulations!” The PEP wasobserved earlier this Novemberfor ano<strong>the</strong>r Rating opportunity.Teen PEP was also guestpresenters for HackensackUniversity Medical Center atWorld Youth AIDS Day andpresented an HIV/AIDSworkshop <strong>to</strong> 600 students fromaround <strong>the</strong> State. They arecurrently updating and workingon three more workshopsbefore <strong>the</strong> Christmas break,contraception, sexuallytransmitted infections andsexual harassment. Theirparent’s night is scheduled for<strong>the</strong> March HSA meeting andthis year we are looking <strong>to</strong>make it a Community Evening.Senior PeersSenior Peers had a verysuccessful retreat in <strong>the</strong> fall as<strong>the</strong>y traveled <strong>to</strong> Frost Valley fora weekend of intensive trainingand bonding. Seniors have metwith <strong>the</strong> freshman six times thisyear and <strong>the</strong>y have bondedwith <strong>the</strong>ir groups and haveaided with <strong>the</strong> freshman’stransition <strong>to</strong> high school. Under<strong>the</strong> guided experience ofVeteran Advisor Janet Gould<strong>the</strong> teens are able <strong>to</strong> runquality discussions with <strong>the</strong>freshman. They also had aguest speaker with Bullying andprocessed with <strong>the</strong>ir groups inpeer meetings. They also hadthree guest speakers in forOrgan Donation, in which <strong>the</strong>Tunick family came in and <strong>the</strong>oldest daughter who graduatedfrom <strong>Tenafly</strong> had received aheart transplant and ten yearslater a kidney transplant fromher sister Jackie, also a <strong>Tenafly</strong>Graduate. Mrs. Tunick was able<strong>to</strong> give <strong>the</strong> parent perspectivewhile <strong>the</strong> daughters <strong>to</strong>ld <strong>the</strong>irs<strong>to</strong>ries.. They will now be7working with <strong>the</strong> freshman oncontinuing a productiveeducation and worthwhile highschool experience.Family LifeFamily life continues staying on<strong>to</strong>p of current <strong>to</strong>pics and lifepertaining issues. The highlyregarded curriculum continues<strong>to</strong> educate <strong>the</strong> students on amyriad of issues pertaining <strong>to</strong>school, life and mental wellbeing. Issues discussed so farthis year have related <strong>to</strong>sexuality, HIV/AIDS, sexuallytransmitted infections,contraception, reproduction andbirthing and cancer issues.Upcoming for family life is <strong>the</strong>irpartner abuse, dating violence,domestic violence, sexualharassment and a mentalhealth unit.AthleticsOur first season under <strong>the</strong> newdivisional set-up has beencompleted. For <strong>the</strong> next twoyears our all-sport division will<strong>the</strong> National Division made upof <strong>Tenafly</strong>, Pascack Valley,Teaneck, Demarest, OldTappan and Bergenfield highschools. Josettecompleted one of <strong>the</strong> greatestcross country seasons by anyrunner in <strong>Tenafly</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry.Josette won <strong>the</strong> Big NorthNational Division Championship,<strong>the</strong> Bergen CountyChampionship and <strong>the</strong> Group 3State Sectional Meet. Thisarrangement optimizes spaceand preserves districtresources.A Row Boat ride for <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong>’s Child DevelopmentProgram’s ToddlersIn Bad Homburg Germany, jus<strong>to</strong>utside of Frankfurt am Main,t<strong>here</strong> is a wonderful newlibrary. You will find in itschildren’s department a rowboat with books inside. Thiswonderful boat adds interest <strong>to</strong><strong>the</strong>ir library, especially for <strong>the</strong>iryoung visi<strong>to</strong>rs. To enhance ourchild development program’s<strong>to</strong>ddler visits <strong>to</strong> our library, wehave obtained our own rowboat which houses an extensivecollection of children’s books.The boat is filled with booksand <strong>the</strong>n during s<strong>to</strong>ry time it isfilled with <strong>to</strong>ddlers, all listening<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>to</strong>ry intently. After<strong>the</strong>y have checked out <strong>the</strong>irbooks <strong>to</strong> bring home, <strong>the</strong> youngstudents board <strong>the</strong> boat (weoutdid Bad Homburg’s boat byplacing it on wheels) and aregiven a ride through <strong>the</strong> hallsback <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Child Developmentclassroom.IPADS as OPACSThe <strong>latest</strong> release of I-Pad’soperating system allows <strong>the</strong>locking of one app, called“guided access.” The only way<strong>to</strong> exit <strong>the</strong> app is through apassword. This ability turns <strong>the</strong>I-Pad in<strong>to</strong> a function-specificdevice that we now use as <strong>the</strong>high school library’s electroniccard catalog.
