The bauhaus-trained artist arrived in Australia in 1940 and was detained as a “friendly” enemy alien in Victoria’s Tatura refugee camp for 18 months. As word of his artistic background spread to the community, Hirschfeld-Mack was released from detention under the sponsorship of Sir James Darling, then Headmaster of Geelong Church of england Grammar School, and appointed as the school’s art master, establishing a name for himself in Australian art circles as an innovative art educator. Little research has been done on the art of the influential teacher, but emerging art researcher Stacie bobele is soon to change that. As the winner of the inaugural $20,000 Ursula Hoff Internship, created with a bequest left to the University by respected art educator Dr Ursula Hoff, bobele will have the chance to spend six months studying 2009 » REPORT TO DONORS Bequest funds research to paint picture of past » The personal story of German artist ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack is as fascinating as the collection of his beautiful monotype prints housed at the Ian Potter Museum of Art. the collection of Hirschfeld-Mack prints at the Potter Museum and the national Gallery of Victoria. She believes her project could reveal important links between european and Australian art, and provide insight into how Hirschfeld-Mack’s technique may have informed Australian printmaking. “I’m looking forward to getting these beautiful prints out of the boxes and writing about something that no one has done a lot on before,” bobele says. “I’d like to look at the monotype technique that he used when he As a mother of two small children, winning the $20,000 internship will allow Bobele “the luxury of time” to research and to dedicate herself to a project. I don’t think the crossover – what he brought with him in terms of bauhaus training – has been looked at to a great extent.” bobele completed a bachelor of Art History and Curatorship at the Australian national University, followed by a Master of Arts in Art History, before relocating to Melbourne one year ago. She hopes the research project will help her confirm a topic for her PhD. “I have an idea for a proposal which is set around the era of these prints,” she says. “I anticipate during the research that I’ll be unearthing a number of things that will confirm whether or not my PhD is a possibility, and let me know my capabilities of being a professional researcher.” As a mother of two small children, winning the $20,000 internship will allow bobele “the luxury of time” to research and to dedicate herself to a project. She had not expected to win an internship, as she was ineligible to apply for the already limited opportunities in her field due to age limits attached. “In between finishing my Masters and having children, I’ve been trying to maintain my writing, with limited amounts of success, due to lack of funds and lack of time,” bobele says. “Getting the internship was fantastic, as it gives me some funds and time to concentrate on a single project. » page 23
