2009 » REPORT TO DONORS
A word of thanks from the Vice-Chancellor »
2010 has brought us the strongest student intake to our new courses so far,
with demand rising in almost every course and our ENTER scores setting a
bracing precedent for the future. We are immensely pleased with how the
community has now embraced the “Melbourne Model”.
Meanwhile, 2009 was a pivotal year
for Australian universities, with the
implementation of far-reaching
reforms to the higher education sector
following the bradley Review. We
have now completed a thorough
review of our “Growing esteem”
Strategic Plan, both to measure our
progress and to adjust to the changing
environment. our fundamental mission
– to be one of the leading public-spirited
universities of the world, making a
distinctive contribution to society –
remains unwavering. but many
details of our strategy have been
refined, and we face the next three
years with renewed energy and
refreshed commitment.
Yet despite the many difficulties
universities faced in the aftermath of
the global financial crisis, 2009 proved
to be another record year for
philanthropic income at the University
of Melbourne, with our support
significantly increased on the previous
year. The following pages set out some
of the new and continuing projects,
and I would like to express my abiding
gratitude for your continuing interest in
and support of our work.
Glyn Davis
Vice-Chancellor
Vice-Chancellor Glyn Davis congratulates 2009 Student Appeal volunteers Wendy Zhao, Marija Strmota and Jimmy Dang,
on the Appeal’s success. In 2009, this student led Appeal raised funds to support 22 additional rent assistance grants of
$500 each to support fellow students in need
Generosity against the odds — A report from
the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (University Affairs) »
While many leading universities reported declines in giving in 2009, the
University of Melbourne was fortunate to benefit from a 14% increase in total
donations and gifts. Donor numbers expanded to over 4,500 (from 3,860 in 2008),
and the Chancellor’s Circle, the recognition program for donors who give more
than $1,000 per annum, grew to more than 900 generous donors.
Professor Bebbington and Dr Bernadette Taylor discuss
Dr Kloester’s acclaimed text Georgette Heyer’s Regency
World at a Heritage Society ‘Morning Tea with an Expert’ event
Among many highlights were the gift
from the estates of RCS and eMC
Webb of $4.7 million for an endowed
Chair in Cattle and Sheep Production
Medicine, an anonymous gift of $1
million for scholarships in business
and economics, the first $1 million
of a multi million dollar pledge from
the Jack brockhoff Foundation for
the Jack brockhoff Child Health and
Wellbeing Program, and $800,000
from the Myer Foundation to support
programs at Asialink.
The opportunities we provide for
donors to meet with staff and
students continue to expand, and
I was pleased to meet many during
our Festival of Ideas in June, at our
exclusive donors’ reception “A night
in Pompeii” at Museum Victoria in
october, and at our Heritage Society
lunch for bequestors in november.
We are also staying in touch with
donors twice a year through the
Report to Donors and the new Annual
Giving Update, with our bequest
donors through the Heritage Society
Newsletters, and with our major givers
through individual Your Endowment
Reports.
A significant number of our donors are
alumni, and our alumni engagement
continues to expand, with annual
events now held in most capital cities
and several Victorian regional centres.
over 9500 alumni attended our
events during 2009 – a rise of 52%
on the previous year. This included
over 500 alumni registering for the
Festival of Ideas, a sellout Potter
Museum tour series and 1500
attendees for “A night at Pompeii.”
Abroad, the Vice-Chancellor and
I accompanied a large delegation
to the 20th Anniversary Dinner of
the University’s Malaysian Alumni
Professor Bebbington with Professor Emeritus Samuel
Aroni and Mrs Malca Aroni enjoying the wine and cheese
alumni event in Los Angeles
Association in August, while successful
events were held in London, new York,
Los Angeles, Singapore, Shanghai,
and beijing, Hong Kong, Japan,
Toronto and Sri Lanka.
our focus for the coming year is to
work towards launching the ‘University
of Melbourne Campaign’, the first
campus-wide fundraising campaign at
the University in over 50 years. You will
hear more from us about the goals of
this Campaign over the coming months.
Meanwhile, to all our supporters whose
names appear in these pages, and
indeed to everyone who gave to us in
2009, my heartfelt thanks.
The University Fund Annual Appeal entered its 20th year in 2009 and remains
the cornerstone of philanthropic support at the University of Melbourne.
Through the Fund, our alumni and friends provide annual support for the
University’s highest priorities, which often include ensuring that the best and
brightest students study at the University regardless of their circumstances.
Donors also have the opportunity to specify which areas of the University
they wish their funds to go towards.
Total annual giving in 2009 increased by 20% with a significant increase in the number of individual donors who continued
to show strong support for assisting both students with both immediate financial needs and long term scholarship support.
Investment Fund
Strategy & Aims
The fund is an accumulation of
endowments from a significant
number of trusts, and University
funds surplus to immediate
operating requirements.
The fund aims to meet the intergenerational
requirements of the
University. This includes providing
funding for large capital projects or
property acquisitions and to enable
trust funds to fulfill obligations as per
their trust deed, whilst at the same
time ensuring the Fund’s perpetuity.
This is achieved by selecting a
portfolio structure that provides long
term capital growth, riding through
short-medium term fluctuations, as
well as reliable income streams to
fulfill current obligations.
The University has outsourced its
Long Term Fund management to
the Victorian Funds Management
Corporation (VFMC), an external
“Manager of Managers”.
Upon outsourcing of the Long Term Fund, the University’s investment pool moved
to a unitised Fund structure. on changeover date, 22nd november 2002, the
units were allocated to fund holders on a one unit for each dollar invested basis.
As can be seen in the graph below, the growth in the unit value of the fund has
been quite steady for several years, however much of the growth was lost during
2008, reflecting Global Investment markets at the time. In the past 12 months the
unit price has begun to recover from the lows of early 2009 with the value as at
The portfolio has been a vital source of income for the University. In 2009 the Fund
generated interest and dividend income of approximately $50.4m, all of which was
distributed to unit holders (in line with the distribution cap of 5.50% for 2009).
Income from the fund is key to ongoing capital works projects and the future
continued support from alumni and friends is crucial.

As highlighted in the graph and table above, on the advice of the portfolio
managers the University has continued to reduce its exposure to Australian
equities. The target allocation for this asset class has moved to 30%.
In line with diversification principles applicable to large investment funds, the
University has continued to expand the asset classes in which it is prepared to
invest. This strategy is designed to take advantage of the long term nature of the
Fund and to ensure the Fund’s growth and perpetuity. The result is a more balanced
allocation in line with the new target weightings recommended by the advisors and
Daniel Taft (middle) discusses his research with his two supervisors,
Professor Anthony Burkitt (left) and Dr David Grayden (right). Photo courtesy
of the Bionic Ear Institute
Daniel Taft will have his PhD conferred
in March this year, in recognition of
his research into having the cochlear
implant (bionic ear) better mimic
sounds so that users of the implant
could achieve more realistic hearing.
The scholarship is funded from
the elizabeth and Vernon Puzey
Foundation that supports students
undertaking research in Science,
Medicine, Dentistry, Health Sciences
or engineering and is jointly managed
by the University of Melbourne and
equity Trustees.
As a younger student, Daniel was
initially interested in studying medicine,
page 8 »
but shifted his focus to engineering
after visiting the University at open
Day. However, it wasn’t until Daniel’s
final undergraduate year that he
married his medical and engineering
interests. “one of my PhD
supervisors was a guest lecturer in
one of my classes where he talked
about the cochlear implant. After
that I read Graeme Clarke’s book and
decided to do my research on the
implant.” Professor Anthony burkitt
was the guest lecturer who inspired
Daniel down his research path.
Professor burkitt remembers
meeting Daniel as a final year
“Scholarships are the lifeblood
of research. It means the very
best students can stay at the
University of Melbourne rather
than studying overseas.”
undergraduate student. “Daniel was
a very, very good student. He has an
incredible aptitude for research. He is
focused, organised and has an insight
into the implications of his research.”
Daniel was also awarded the Dixson
Scholarship in engineering in June
2009. The Dixson Scholarship
allowed him to focus on writing a
journal article once his PhD was
submitted and being considered by
the examiners. The article has been
accepted by Institute of electrical
engineers (Iee) Transactions on
Biomedical Engineering journal. “The
journal is an international publication
which means that my research will be
widely available to other researchers.
It also gives me some professional
recognition for my work.” no doubt
Daniel’s work will also contribute
to the University of Melbourne
maintaining its reputation
as a leader in the field of cochlear
implant technology.
While the research has allowed
Daniel to further his own career,
it has also generated the potential
to improve the hearing quality of
thousands worldwide who rely on
cochlear implants. “The distance
between pure research and
application is very close in Daniel’s
PhD,” says Professor burkitt. “Daniel
worked with patients, using a studio
at the bionic ear Institute to test the
benefit of his ideas with cochlear
implant users.”
Does Professor burkitt see the
results of scholarships on offer?
You bet he does. “Scholarships are
the lifeblood of research. It means
the very best students can stay at
the University of Melbourne rather
than studying overseas.”

international legal issues »
The John and Alison Kearney overseas
Scholarships are awarded to students
based upon academic merit and financial
need. The students must also have
been accepted into an approved course
of study at an overseas university. The
Scholarships, each worth $5000, are
being awarded for a period of five years
and will support 26 students in total.
Devon Whittle, a 2009 recipient, spent a
semester at the Centre for Transnational
Legal Studies (CTLS) in London. Devon
also spent three months in Arusha,
Tanzania, after successfully gaining an
intern placement at the International
“At the Centre I gained a great deal
of knowledge about transnational law
In donating funds for a new scholarship for the Melbourne School of land
memory of her family who farmed
in the nagambie district. “I’m very
concerned about our country’s
ability to produce food in the future,”
she said. Miss Robinson donated
$100,000 to fund one or more annual
REPORT TO DONORS » 2009
History repeated thanks to generous donation »
It has been more than 50 years since the Very Reverend Father Miltiades
Chryssavgis received a generous bursary and scholarship to study at the
University of Melbourne, but he can still remember the significant impact
it had on his life.
“The support I received as a student enabled
me to study with considerable ease and
convenience, and use all the facilities available
to me,” Miltiades Chryssavgis (BA (Hons) 1956,
MA 1957) recalls. In a gesture of thanks to the
University, he is now returning the favour by
providing other Melbourne students with the
same opportunities and support that he received.
Miltiades and his wife, Alkistis, have donated $100,000
over recent years to the University to form the Miltiades
and Alkistis Chryssavgis Scholarship, awarded annually to
a first year bachelor of Arts student in financial need.
Miltiades, a priest of the Greek orthodox Church, sees
his donation as a way of giving back to the University and
the wider community. “If we enable students to study,
it will offer a great service to the community,” he said.
“I think there’s a feeling of satisfaction on my part to be
able to give back to the community and my alma mater,
and to offer another person the same opportunities.”
page 10 »
Student Julianne bell received the Miltiades and Alkistis
Chryssavgis Scholarship in 2009, and said it came as an
enormous relief. “I’m a self-funded student, and it can
be very difficult to balance work, life and study – I have to
work much more than is recommended to get by,” she said.
“As I’m doing an Arts degree, I have a lot of reading to do,
so it requires a lot of preparation to make sure I get the most
out of classes. The scholarship enables me to ease off a
little at work, buy textbooks and spend more time preparing
for study.”
When Julianne met Miltiades at an Arts event last year,
she was touched to hear his personal story and realise it was
similar to her own. “He was unable to support himself and
was given a scholarship – and it was really, really nice that
he wanted to give back so someone else could have
the same opportunities.”
The two also discovered a shared interest in history. Julianne
fell in love with ancient history while travelling in Greece,
and decided to major in History and Ancient World Studies
at university. When Miltiades was granted a scholarship to
reside at Trinity College from 1952 to 1956, he majored in
History and Classics. In 1956, he was awarded a scholarship
for his Master of Arts degree, and studied texts of classical
historians and the origin of the Greeks.
Miltiades said it had been a pleasure to meet Julianne and he
wished her much success with her studies. “I am confident
that Julianne will succeed in her field, and she will one day
give her services back to the community.”
Staff continue to support the University »
2009 » REPORT TO DONORS
Staff at the University of Melbourne contribute in so many ways to the
life and activities of the University and community. Staff have generously
supported the University philanthropically since its inception. Despite the
tough economic climate Australia experienced in 2009, staff continued to
make donations to support the University.
Last year, 195 staff donated more
than $620,000 to support projects
across the University. Staff are able to
donate through the workplace giving
program or directly to specific projects.
A major motivation for staff donors is to
provide students with the best possible
University experience. Having day to
day contact with students means that
Ms Brooke Young, Executive
Director of the Graduate School of
Business and Economics
Tim Neilson, Senior Fellow,
donated to the Law School this
year. Photo: Peter Casamento
University staff are able to recognise
the on-going and enriching impact that
scholarships and financial aid can have,
by enabling students to have more time
to focus on their studies.
Tim neilson, a Senior Fellow in the
Melbourne Law Masters Program,
donated to the Law School in this
year’s Annual Appeal to provide law
students with scholarships. “I decided
to give to the Law School I went
through. I am grateful for what others
did that made my time at the Law
School so beneficial to me, and I hope
that students will continue to have the
same quality of experience that I did. I
decided to give to scholarships because
clearly scholarships are important for
students,” said Mr neilson.
A long association with the University,
having obtained his undergraduate
degree in Arts at the University of
Melbourne, motivated Professor Ian
Holtham to make a donation to the
University. Professor Holtham is
currently Convenor of Keyboard in
the University’s School of Music and
is the Associate Dean (Academic)
of the Faculty of the VCA and Music.
“I don’t know a classical musician who
hasn’t received support in one form
or another. It’s consistent giving that
makes a difference.” For the last two
years, Professor Holtham has been a
member of the Chancellor’s Circle.
The now retired Head of Zoology,
Professor David Macmillan, had a
strong connection to the University,
and was strongly supported by those
he worked with. “I went blind in
2007 and the support I received from
the University was very humbling;
I continued in my position as Head
of the department for 12 months,
which I couldn’t have done without
their support and this was the best
therapy I could have had.” on retiring
from the Faculty, he demonstrated
his generosity and commitment to
Science by presenting the Library
with a rare Francis bacon book, in
addition to supporting the restoration
of the Tiegs Zoology Museum (a
collection of zoological specimens
dating from the late 19th century to
the present).
“I see the difference it makes...
Any financial support makes
a difference.”
brooke Young, executive Director
of the Graduate School of business
and economics was motivated to
give because of her involvement with
students. “I see the difference it
makes. First, it’s the recognition the
students get when they receive an
award. Second, the students feel
more involved in the University
community. Any financial support
makes a difference.”
Supporting the Faculty
of the VCA and Music is
a two way street »
Since setting up The lionel Gell
Foundation, Mr Gell has been a keen
supporter of the Faculty of the VCA
and Music (VCAM).
For the past two years, the Foundation has supported students
through a combination of fee, bursary and travel scholarships,
but this year all the scholarships are to support students
undertaking their final year of undergraduate studies.
This year the Lionel Gell Foundation scholarships will cover
fees and provide a bursary for nine students across each VCAM
School. “I felt that supporting the students’ final year sets
them up for their future artistic profession. I’m amazed at how
far students can make the money go,” said Mr Gell, who has
known tough times himself.
Mr Gell grew up in West brunswick, Melbourne in a family that
often struggled to make ends meet. From an early age Mr Gell
took part-time jobs to contribute to the family’s income. Despite
being interested in pursuing art, Mr Gell had neither the finances,
nor the time.
At 14, Mr Gell left school and worked tirelessly at several
successful businesses. It’s this success that allows Mr Gell
to support VCAM so generously.
“without this scholarship I would not have
been able to commit the time necessary to
develop my art to the degree that I have in
the past year... time is an essential and
priceless commodity.“
It’s plain to see the impact of the scholarship for this year’s
recipient, Camille Robinson. “I am very grateful for the income
support this scholarship has brought me. To put it briefly,
without the support of this scholarship I would not have
been able to commit the time necessary to develop my art
to the degree that I have in the past year. When it comes to
attempting to enhance one’s facility in the art of composition,
time is an essential and priceless commodity.”
but the scholarship means more to Camille than an opportunity
to hone artistic abilities. Camille adds that “this scholarship has
lightened the financial pressure associated with studying as a
parent, and it has largely saved me having to make the difficult
and almost impossible choice between spending time working,
spending time making my art, and spending time with my
daughter. In this respect the benefit to me and my family cannot
be under estimated.” other recipients have similar views.
but the benefits are not one-way because Mr Gell takes
pleasure from hearing from recipients and attending VCAM
events. Indeed, Mr Gell carries a postcard from a recipient
who used the scholarship to study in the USA. The postcard
thanks Mr Gell and tells of the recipient’s experiences. “I’ve

Mr Gell’s generous support
found that offering the scholarships means so much
to the students,” said Mr Gell.
In addition to offering the scholarships, the Lionel Gell
Foundation supports two intensive art masterclass programs
each year. The program reflects Mr Gell’s life long interest in
portrait painting and is in memory of his friend, and portrait
painter, Ms Dora McRae. The program invites students from
the VCAM School of Art to work with visiting artists to further
the development of students’ figurative artistic practice.
Bequest set to strengthen veterinary
science Program »
A donation of $4.7 million will enable the University of Melbourne to establish
and fund a new Chair in the Faculty of Veterinary Science. The donation is one
of the largest single donations received by the University.
The remarkably generous gift –
the residual estate of two farming
brothers from Seymour, Victoria –
will fund a new Chair in Cattle and
Sheep Production Medicine. The size
of the donation ensures annual income
to support the position in perpetuity.
“The gift will allow the Faculty to
enhance its already strong programs in
cattle and sheep production medicine,
and will provide more opportunities
to educate veterinarians for rural
practice,” said Professor Hinchcliff,
the Dean of Veterinary Science.
“Veterinary science has a huge part to
play in ensuring the future of livestock
production systems in south-eastern
Australia and we, at the University of
Melbourne, are committed to support
of agricultural industries. Gifts such as
this allow us to provide this support.”
Farming in developed countries is
now a very scientific endeavour,
with primary producers constantly
seeking ways to improve animal
health, welfare and biosecurity. In
recognition of this, Professor Hinchcliff
“The gift will allow the Faculty
to provide more opportunities
to educate veterinarians for
rural practice.”
page 14 »
From left to right: Professor Ken Hinchcliff, Mr Ross Sutherland, Vice-Chancellor
Glyn Davis, and Mr Doug Lade at the offices of Mutual Trust Pty Ltd
notes, “our role as veterinary scientists
is to help maintain optimal health and
wellbeing of farm animals through
teaching, research and development,
and provision of veterinary care,
with flow-on effects for graziers
of improved productivity and quality
of produce.”
The Chair has been funded by the
estates of farming brothers ewart
McKillop Cappur Webb and Richard
Cappur Scott Webb, local identities
in the Seymour area. After returning
from World War II, the brothers
established highly successful grazing
operations with both Merino sheep
and Hereford cattle.
The brothers left their residual estates
for such charitable, scientific or
educational purposes in the State of
Victoria that the trustees so determined.
In endowing the chair, the Trustees
have ensured that the Faculty of
Veterinary Science will be able to
continue to build its contribution to
research, practice and teaching in these
areas and the economy of Victoria.
The Webb brothers have a history
of supporting students. Doug Lade,
a trustee who knew Cappur and
Dick, said, “The brothers didn’t
have any children, but offered
financial help to their friends’ children
so the children could complete their
studies. The brothers wanted their
support of students to continue,
even after their passing.”
According to the other trustee Ross
Sutherland, “The Webb brothers were
interested in cattle and sheep and
wanted to make a difference in that
area. The trustees researched and
were very keen on the Mackinnon
Project in the Faculty of Veterinary
Science for its practical approach to
veterinary science, experience and
commercial focus of the staff.”
The University is a leader in
education in this area and the
donation will leverage strengths
to provide a cohesive approach to
the challenges faced in the sheep
and cattle industry in south-eastern
Australia in the 21st century.
Ross Sutherland has every
confidence that the Webb brothers’
wishes will be carried out at the
University of Melbourne saying,
“Professor Hinchcliff is a very capable
person to drive the project.”

student through the University of
Melbourne’s ‘Mentor Program for
Highly Able Secondary Students’.”
It’s no coincidence that Henry and the
Professor share the same surname, as
Graham is Henry’s first cousin once
removed. Although Graham is acting as
one of the trustees for Henry’s estate,
he said, “Until I saw Henry’s Will, I
had no idea he was going to make a
bequest to the Department of Surgery.”
“Henry was a real gentleman. He loved
life and had broad interests, but his
real passion was his local church.”
In retirement Henry continued to help
his many friends and the numerous
organisations in which he took an active
interest. Henry will be remembered
as a generous person, for both his
wise counsel and willingness to
help whatever the occasion. Henry’s
generosity continues through his will
that provides for a number of charities.
The Department of Surgery at
Austin Health is associated with the
Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and
Health Sciences and has established
an international reputation in liver
transplantation and the treatment
of metastatic colon cancer. The
Department of Surgery also places
Anita has grabbed the opportunity
with both hands. “This trip has really
opened my eyes to both the role of one
mathematician in the greater realm of
science, and also to the role of science
in society as a whole. It’s hard to say
how glad I am to have been given this
opportunity. I plan to take full advantage
of the drive it’s given me.”
“The inspiration has spilled over into
my own work and my plans for the
future, and I now feel more able to
make something of them.”
“being so far away from familiar faces
and surroundings really forced me to
concentrate on my work, and it also
stoked my general interest in the other
sciences that I’m keen to explore in the
near future,” said Anita.
Mr Henry Baldwin
a strong emphasis on research and
a team of leading gastrointestinal
researchers is making steady progress
in the area of gastrointestinal cancer.
Austin Health provides an ideal
environment for exciting research
and for patient care.
“...funding is always difficult
to obtain in today’s fiercely
competitive environment.”
The bauhaus-trained artist arrived in
Australia in 1940 and was detained as a
“friendly” enemy alien in Victoria’s Tatura
refugee camp for 18 months. As word
of his artistic background spread to
the community, Hirschfeld-Mack was
released from detention under the
sponsorship of Sir James Darling,
then Headmaster of Geelong Church
of england Grammar School, and
appointed as the school’s art master,
establishing a name for himself in
Australian art circles as an innovative
art educator.
Little research has been done on the
art of the influential teacher, but
emerging art researcher Stacie bobele
is soon to change that.
As the winner of the inaugural
$20,000 Ursula Hoff Internship,
created with a bequest left to the
University by respected art educator
Dr Ursula Hoff, bobele will have the
chance to spend six months studying
The personal story of German artist ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack is as fascinating
as the collection of his beautiful monotype prints housed at the Ian Potter
Museum of Art.
the collection of Hirschfeld-Mack
prints at the Potter Museum and the
national Gallery of Victoria.
She believes her project could reveal
important links between european and
Australian art, and provide insight into
how Hirschfeld-Mack’s technique may
have informed Australian printmaking.
“I’m looking forward to getting these
beautiful prints out of the boxes and
writing about something that no one
has done a lot on before,” bobele says.
“I’d like to look at the monotype
technique that he used when he
As a mother of two small
herself to a project.
trained at bauhaus under (renowned
european artist) Paul Klee… and see if
it was actually picked up by any other
Australian artist during that time. I don’t
think the crossover – what he brought
with him in terms of bauhaus training –
has been looked at to a great extent.”
bobele completed a bachelor of Art
History and Curatorship at the Australian
national University, followed by a
Master of Arts in Art History, before
relocating to Melbourne one year ago.
She hopes the research project will help
her confirm a topic for her PhD.
“I have an idea for a proposal which is
set around the era of these prints,” she
says. “I anticipate during the research
that I’ll be unearthing a number of
things that will confirm whether or not
my PhD is a possibility, and let me
know my capabilities of being a
professional researcher.”
As a mother of two small children,
winning the $20,000 internship will
allow bobele “the luxury of time” to
research and to dedicate herself to a
project. She had not expected to win an
internship, as she was ineligible to apply
for the already limited opportunities in
her field due to age limits attached.
“In between finishing my Masters
and having children, I’ve been trying
to maintain my writing, with limited
amounts of success, due to lack of
funds and lack of time,” bobele says.
“Getting the internship was fantastic,
as it gives me some funds and time
to concentrate on a single project.
