Contact us at: lgbtfed@googlemail.comTheUltimate BallFriday 13th turned out verylucky for some fabulouslydressed people from the LGBTcommunity in and around theNorth East. Urban Café at DanceCity in the centre of Newcastlehelped host a wonderful eveningof music and dancing for us andour friends. The LGBT Federation volunteersand organisers put on the eventin response to lots of requestsfor more social events that bringtogether all ages in a safe andrelaxing environment but with aview to developing a closer, morecollaborative feel to our regionalcommunity. To help us feel a sense of occasionand celebration for who we areas individuals - all striving for afairer and more equal lifestyle - thetheme was “Dress to Impress.”Suits, Frocks, mixed and matched, elaborate hats and bow tieseverywhere, even a Kilt, and theband definitely managed to ‘Swingthe mood’ from the outset withsome good old fashioned cheekto cheek dancing. The dancingcontinued all evening with PatFisher desperately trying to beheard giving out step by stepinstructions to her happy troop ofdancers. There was somethingfor everyone though, the youngerset all had a great time with somemore popular tunes from Killers,Cold Play, Pink and Katy Perry; butwhat was best of all for me wasthat the older generation were outin force showing the rest how toenjoy life to the full.Smiling faces were everywhere allnight and well into the next day byall accounts. The follow up responses weregreat. The Ultimate, Intimateball incorporated a consultationelement too which was organisedand managed by Helen Whittaker.Lots of useful informationwas gathered to feedback forthe purposes of meeting theFederation’s continuing aims andobjectives. Cris McCurley, Partner,Ben Haore Bell SolicitorsOPINIONHurrah! There is all sorts of newLaw popping up at the momentto bring a smile to the face of anyoutlaw in the UK. Two such areworth a mention here.On 6 April 2009 we will havethe Human Fertilisation andEmbryology Act 2008 comingonto statute books. This updatesthe earlier Act of 1990 in severalimportant ways:This in many ways is a landmarkpiece of legislation. I can recall,as I am sure many others will, thatwhen the 1990 HFEA came in,clinics were at liberty to refuse totreat single women or same sexcouples, and indeed anecdotallyI am told that the Centre for Lifein Newcastle refused to treatsame sex couples. This will notbe permissible under the newlegislation. This may come as news toCaroline Harris and Julie McMillianwho threatened to sue Glasgowand Clyde NHS for its refusal togrant them fertility treatment. Theboard had stipulated that the twowomen did not “fit the definitionof an infertile couple” and thatIVF is only given when a couplecannot conceive because onepartner is infertile. Obviously thisconstitutes discrimination. In atypically sympathetic article inthe Daily Mail, Graham Grant(27/02/2009) mourned the fate of“many heterosexual couples (who)are languishing on lengthy waitinglists for the treatment.”What does that mean? Oh,he means that they are moreworthy….Homophobia out of Football couldseriously do with a boost, butnonetheless it is a huge step in theright direction. The Act is intended to addressthe very serious threat of real andthreatened violence to lesbiansand gay men for no other reasonthan their sexuality. The CrownProsecution Service, according toStonewall, have recently confirmedthat “prosecutions for homophobichate crimes increased by 168% inthe last 2 years.”What the laws will cover are anyincitement to violence, includingthose contained in song lyric form, meaning that it will be illegal topublish or sell the offensive kindof hardcore rap music that oftenfeatures horrifically anti-gay lyrics. This is indeed a start.Under the Act, a new legal role iscreated for the female partner ofa birth mother in circumstancesmaking her position the same asthe male husband or partner of amother who had undergone fertilitytreatment. As long as the mother’spartner be it man or woman, agrees to be named as parent, then their name will be added tothe birth certificate as the secondparent. The second parent, forobvious reasons, must give writtenconsent to this as it is a majorstep. The Act also makes provisionfor a child born after a surrogacyarrangement, be they same sex oropposite sex couples, they will bethe parents nonetheless. The Act is intended to address the very seriousthreat of real and threatened violence to lesbians andgay men for no other reason than their sexuality.“prosecutions for homophobic hate crimesincreased by 168% in the last 2 years.”A word of caution however, agreeing to be a parent meansjust that. I don’t suppose for onemoment that many couples willrush into it without thinking, butshould the relationship breakdown, the non-biological parentshould be aware that she will bejust as liable for child support asany birth parent. The second piece of legislationto mention is the Criminal Justiceand Immigration Act 2008. Thisintroduced the completely newcriminal offence of “incitement tohatred on the grounds of sexualorientation.” We all have a lot to begrateful to Stonewall for this. Theycampaigned long and hard for thisto be included in the Act. Any ofus who go to football matches ona regular basis will be familiar withthe revolting anti-gay chanting thatgoes on against some players.Sadly the Act is not intended tocover what it deemed “jokes”, or“playground banter.” That is a pity, because campaigns such as KickThe government also take theway in that the House of Lordswere able to push through anamendment to the Act later inthe day adding a defence of “agenuine religious conviction.” Thisreally is short sighted becauseit means that those who seekto misquote Islamic scripture/the Koran or the bible to theirown ends will be able to use thisdefence, even presumably to theextent that some extremist Muslimleaders promote Jihad or HolyWar against gays and lesbians.Obviously this is all to be testedout in the Court and hopefullygood sense will prevail and thedefence will not succeed.Hands up who is sick of hearing the phrase “its political correctnessgone mad.”? I personally think it should be banned. Frightened rightwingers of all colour and religious persuasion have been braying it like amantra following the government’s decision that it is ok to tell school kidsthat it is ok to be gay. I ask you! All we are talking about is a few booksabout alternative families and people are going crackers and pulling theirkids out of lessons. One man (interviewed in the Daily Mail) describinghimself as a 41 year old accountant said “Christians and Muslim parentsobjected.” and “we as parents did not receive any guidance that this wasgoing to happen…. I don’t want my children learning about this. I wrotea letter to the chairman of the governors explaining I would be taking mychildren out of school.” He went on to say that he is now faced with Courtaction, and rightly so. What are these people so afraid of? PersonallyI think intolerance and bigotry is far more frightening than the openportrayal of a loving family: but then that’s just me.And speaking of loving families, it seems that our favourite Palin, BristolsPalin and her fiancé, Levi, have separated. Frankly I’m devastated…andso shocked. I never saw that coming, what with them being the very modelof strong loving heterosexual parenthood, and all…..What will they teachin schools, now?Hands up who is sick of hearing the phrase“its political correctness gone mad.”?I personally think it should be banned.16 Out North East / Issue 15 / www.outnortheast.comOut North East / Issue 15 / www.outnortheast.com 17

TRAVELThe scene is lively and welcoming, packedtight into the old quarter of the city where it catersfor those wanting civilised cocktails - to sexbars and endless dark rooms.MADRIDTouching down at Madrid’s Barajasairport I almost felt like a man embarkingon an affair. Now, I wasn’t going to meet adodgy waiter named Carlos orPedro for a weekend of lust, instead I was straying awayfrom my beloved Barcelonaand visiting its rival city, Spain’scapital Madrid. The first thing to hit me on myarrival was the heat. Barcelonathrough its sea location has alwaysgot a pleasant light breeze, butMadrid being in the centre ofSpain welcomes the new visitorwith the most intense heat you canexperience anywhere in Europe.I was booked into the Gay HostalPuerta del la Sol, which wasdirectly in the centre of the city’smain Plaza. After fighting throughendless crowds with suitcasebehind me and taking nearly 30minutes to identify which buildingmy hotel was in, I was eventuallyable to check into what was to bea very friendly and cosy hotel. Thelocation of the Hotel is not idealif you are looking for a quiet stay(with the Plaze being the meetingplace in Madrid), but it does meanthat the underground is on yourdoorstep and you can walk prettymuch to all the key touristy sites ifyou wish.I decided that my first taste ofMadrid was going to be the RoyalPalace (Palacio Real de Madrid). Now I have never had muchinterest in seeing such sites, but Ihad been informed that this wasa must see and the palace didnot disappoint. The place wasenormous and surprisingly notthat busy. Following strict touristcode I wore a headset which tookme from room to room in perfectEnglish. After a while I have to admit I wastotally lost which bit of info fittedwith which room, but that no longermattered. What had caught myattention was how each room justgot grander and grander, reflectingthe endless wealth and taste ofpast kings and queens. I couldhave happily moved in, but therewas already one queen livingthere, no room for another! Thatnight I was lucky enough to meetup with a friend who showed mearound the gay scene of Madridthat is named the ‘Chueca’.The scene is lively and welcoming, packed tight into the old quarterof the city where it caters for thosewanting civilised cocktails - to sexbars and endless dark rooms.Unlike many scenes it also had avery visible and well catered forlesbian community too. As withmuch of Spain many people donot go out to eat until very late,10pm is quite normal, with the barsand clubs being open to very/earlyinto the morning.Waking the following day withan horrific hangover a cookedSpanish breakfast with coffee wasa must, found just a side streetaway from the hotel. Working itsmagic I was soon ready to revertback to cultured tourist, ratherthan scene queen and headedoff to the museum and gallerydistrict of the city for some seriousculture. Madrid is home to somefantastic museums and galleries, such as the Museo del Prado,Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza andMuseo Nacional Centre de ArteReina Sofia, all located feet fromeach other in the ‘golden triangle’.Around the ‘golden triangle’ thereare lots of bars and restaurants, but if you just head a block ortwo away you can taste realSpanish ‘menu del dia’ with itsthree courses and wine for just afew Euros, perfect. At the end ofmy trip, I have to admit my heartstill belonged to Barcelona, butMadrid definitely has its own buzzand larger than life night life whichmakes any visitor welcome andwishing to return for more.Getting there: KLM has flights(via Amsterdam) from bothNewcastle and Durham Tees.Mark CaseyTravel - Madrid22 Out North East / Issue 15 / www.outnortheast.comOut North East / Issue 15 / www.outnortheast.com 23

How can Iget started and what do I haveto do. I have always wantedto do drag as a job and go toevery show I can and have seenlots of different drag queensall over the country. I would begrateful for any help or adviseyou could give me. I just don’tknow were to start.AWell being a drag queen is one ofthem jobs were you can do it oryou can’t, there is no middle road.Sadly there is no collage were youcan go and learn the job. I’m sureit’s in your blood or its not. I ama bit worried that you were to shyto come and talk to me about itat one of my shows as one of thekey parts of the job is you haveto be VERY out going and beingshy and drag don’t go together.I’ve been doing drag for 22 yearsand I have loved every day of itI can not think of any other job Iwould want to do. Some peoplethink it’s just party and fun but itreally is hard work. People justsee the show and think that’s allthere is to it. They forget the longdrives up and down the country, the rigging up and down of thesound system and sometimesthe job can be very lonely. Sayingall this I would never change myjob for the world. I love to try andmake people laugh and if I get oneperson saying they have enjoyedthere night then I have done myjob. Next time you come and seeone of my shows come and chatto me after the show and I will tryand help you as much as I can. I havecome to terms with the fact thatI am a gay man and I’m veryhappy. My one problem is that Ijust can’t seem to find a man toshare my life with. I don’t wantto get drunk and take drugsand sleep around with differentmen. I don’t know if it’s justme or is this what happens onthe gay scene? I want to finda nice guy and settle down. I’mnot getting any younger haveI left it to late to find true loveand be the person that I havelonged to be all my life?AI must say first well done for beinghonest with yourself some peoplelive there whole life a lie and arenever happy.
