News from the North East – www.outnortheast.comnews ... news in in brief in briefSee over 100 photos from Northern Pride at www.outnortheast.coma review from Tom GormanNorthern6 PrideOrganisers and public alike have hailed the first NorthernPride a huge success. The community lesbian, gay, bi andtrans (LGBT) festival, held over the start of July, culminated ina Pride Parade and Pink Picnic in the centre of Newcastle.Over 400 revellers took part in the parade, despite a tightrestriction on numbers and many more lined the streets joiningin with the carnival spirit. Onlookers cheered as the colourfultroupe, led by members of the superbly noisy Bangshees, snaked through the Saturday shoppers. As the parade arrived in one of Newcastle’s most beautiful parks, the Mayor opened the Pink Picnic, followed by bands, stalls, and the odd tipple. With over 2,500 Picnic goers there wasa great buzz in the air.Speaking about the events Tom Gorman,Chair of Northern Pride said,“The atmosphere was absolutely amazing, it really was a dayto be Proud. I was so pleased the weather held out – I evenmanaged to get sunburnt!“I think the best bit for me had to be the shear mix of people –old and young, scene-goers and non-scene folk, plus people hadtravelled from all over the region to be part of it. It truly was thebiggest Pride event the Northeast has ever seen.“The hard work of the committee, and the dedication of SianBroadhurst, Community Development Worker for NewcastleCity Council inparticular, meant all our events were a brilliantsuccess.Comedy fans weren’t disappointed with Scott Capurro andfriends at The Last Laugh comedy night. The ever sparkly andhighly titillating Jonathan Mayor as compere gave Stephen KAmos and Mandy Muden a close run in the laughter stakes.Plans are already afoot for next year’s festival, if you’d like to getinvolved take a look at www.northernpride.org.uk out for detailsof Northern Pride’s AGM taking place in late August.6. There are always women onthe waiting list and we recruit regularly.Member subs, grants, and occasionalbusking pays for the instruments andpractice hall rent, and some of the manygigs that we play at are paid. We play atcharity and sports events and festivals,or busk for charity donations, and alwaysreceive much appreciation. The tunes weplay come from various sources, but thereare talented members who write tunes thatare just for us. ICONS – Out Northeast Icons. Words; Paul Corduex | Illustration : Brand NuMadonnaTurning 50 this summer and hitting the headlines again followingrumours of an imminent divorce from hubby Guy Ritchie, Madonna isnever far from the public eye. Her award-winning career has spannedthe decades and on the rare occasion she tours, her shows are immediatesell-outs. You may think you know a lot about the chameleon of pop, you’re probably her Number 1 fan, but just what makes Madonna one ofthe biggest gay icons in recent history? Her path to stardom began when she lefther Catholic family in Michigan and movedto New York City in 1977 with $35 and astraight ‘A’ graduation from Rochester ArmsHigh School. Hard to imagine now, but theyoung Madonna Louise Ciccone faced toughtimes in New York and took jobs in fast foodrestaurants to make ends meet. She fell backon her dance training and performed whenand where she could.By 1982, Madonna had toured as a dancerand had fallen in and out of severalrelationships with men. Most notably,Stephen Bray with whom she had writtenand performed several dance tunes under theband name Emmy. On the back of Emmy’sdemo recordings, Sire Records signedMadonna to their label and spawned albumsand singles, including Like a Virgin whichwent to Number 1 in the ‘States selling 12million copies worldwide.Within four years, Madonna had appearedin several films, and had Number 1 singlesand albums in the UK and America. Althoughher acting performances were generallymet with moderate critical acclaim, thefilms were commercially viable. 1985 sawa collaborative US Tour with the BeastieBoys entitled The Virgin Tour. Madonna’swork continued a contradictory sexual andreligious theme throughout the 1980s andshe sparked a fashion trend amongst youngwomen for wearing jewellery with religiouscrossed and lace tops. Now married to actor Sean Penn, Madonna’scareer looked set to explode as she released1986’s True Blue album including theTop5 single Papa Don’t Preach. She actedalongside Penn in several productions andmade her stage debut in Goose and Tom-Tom.It was during this second phase of her careerthat she gained negative publicity from theCatholic Church into which she had beenbaptised. The Pope himself urged ItalianCatholics not to support her world tours andto boycott her music. It is from this periodthat some of Madonna’s most memorablesongs images come, closely associatingCatholic symbolism and sexuality.Following the set-up of her own recordlabel Maverick in 1992 and her divorce formPenn in 1989 following a troubled marriage,Madonna embarked upon yet another stageof her development. Her most successful filmcame out of this period, 1996’s Evita in whichshe played the lead role of Eva Peron. Themid-nineties were dominated for Madonna bymore sexual themes and a cooling off of hercommercial appeal as a singer. Her albumswere banned in some countries for theirstrong sexual content and S&M connotations. Her infamous first book, Sex, was alsoreleased by Maverick and sold well despitebeing slammed for it’s overt sexual and eroticcontent. It was as the 90s ended and the newmillennium approached that we weregiven the first glimpses of the Madonna wenow know and love. Her music career wasrevived and in her personal life she met andbegan a relationship with the man she wasto marry and form her longest partnershipwith, British film director Guy Ritchie.Musically, Madonna’s albums Ray of Light,Music and Confessions On A Dance Floorwere commercial successes with the onlynotable failure being American Life, whichwas her most unsuccessful album to date. Her latest album, Hard Candy was releasedthis year and he has enjoyed success withthe first single 4 Minutes, as well as makingher directorial debut with the film Faith andWisdom. Madonna’s latest world tour entitlesSticky and Sweet begins in August 2008.Having weathered the storm of her troubledrelationships and successfully fought thecritics Madonna has become a legend inher own lifetime. Mystery and speculationsurrounds her and she has caused more thanher fair share of drama and controversy. Asher 50th year approaches, single once moreand facing an uncertain personal future,Madonna can take strength from the millionsof gay and straight fans for whom she is theultimate icon.www.outnortheast.com 13. Jason Caddy chats to Anders, from Alphabeat14Danish Viking King Bluetoothmade warring factions kissand make up, and his namenow lives on thanks to mobilephone technology.A few years later came a certain lagerwhich was, the ad men had us believe, reluctantly shared with the rest of the world. Then there’s the bacon and the butter.Joining the pantheon is Denmark’s latestexport, Alphabeat. Jason Caddy touches oneverything from The Magpies to Madonnain conversation with lead singer Anders SG,ahead of the group’s gig atNewcastle’s Powerhouse. You’re playing Newcastle twice this year, first as part of the BIG CRUZ WEEKENDERat The Powerhouse club. What do youknow about Newcastle and Geordies? Our drummer Troels is a big fan of NewcastleUnited FC, and my favourite beer beforecoming to the UK was Newcastle Brown Ale.It’s now in my top ten, after I was exposed toall the other beers that you have here. You are set to play Manchester Gay Pride thesame weekend as The Big Cruz weekender inNewcastle. What do you make of your Gay fans?We had no idea the gay community had suchan interest in our music back in Denmark. It only became apparent once we came tothe UK, and we are all blown away by it. Itmakes sense that gay people like us, as weare about being open-minded and fun.You were on the BBC’s Something for theWeekend recently, and you had played GAYin London the night before. You mentionedhow overwhelmed you all were by thereception you got.Definitely. Some of our absolute best gigshave been in gay clubs. Gay people reallyknow how to let loose and have a great time. And we all had hangovers that morning, which was probably obvious during theinterview. You recently turned down the opportunityto support the Spice Girls Tour. Why wasthat? Which is your favourite Spice? We had only been in London a matter ofweeks when were approached. It wouldhave been just too weird to stand in front of20,000 people and then ten people at ourfirst tour. We wanted to do things on our ownterms. My favourite spice girl? I’d have to sayVictoria, because that’s my girlfriend’s name.2008 has been a very busy year with a selloutsecond tour. What have been the highlights so far?Playing live anywhere is a highlight, butwhat really stands out is the headline gig atLondon’s Koko, about a month ago. That wasjust spectacular. You mention Wuthering Heights in yoursingle 10,000 Nights. Is Kate Bush aninfluence? Our lyrics have many references and thatparticular one isn’t an allusion to Kate, although Hounds of Love is a brilliant album.People can take what they want from theway we write and that’s fine by us. It’s verymuch open to interpretation. What bands have most influenced you?We all have a Hot Chip (British electropopband) fetish right now. We like their musicand can’t really say a bad word about them.I wouldn’t say they were an influence. That credit goes to David Bowie, Chic andMadonna - real 80s is what we love. What are your thoughts on Hard Candy?Troels really likes it. I have only heard thesingles and I thought they were a bit weak. Are you working on your second album? Our guitarist, Anders B, writes our songs andhe’s continually penning stuff. The songson our first album were written over fouryears, so we are looking forward to writingan album that captures a particular mood, reflecting where we are as a band. Werecorded a lot of the last album as live, sonow we are all much more in to productionvalues and tinkering with the songs in theirrawest form to yield more interesting results. You have been a big hit in the UK, anyplans to break into the US?Does it want to be broken? We are planningon going for a couple of months, doing thebasic stuff. Nothing like the promotion workwe have put in here.If you want to see Alphabeat before they goStratospheric in the States, catch them atManchester Pride and at The Powerhouse onSaturday 24th August.WIN a pair of VIP TICKETS, with Champagneand goodie bag, for ALPHABEAT at THEPOWERHOUSE, as part of THE BIG CRUZWEEKENDER.Just answer the following question:ALPHABEAT had a hit this summer with:a) 10, 000 Daysb) 10, 000 Nightsc) 10, 000 YearsEmail your answers plus full nameand your mobile number to:editorial@outnortheast.comEntries must be received by: Tuesday 19thAugust 2008. Geordie Travel with Mark CaseyNEWcastleEach travel piece that I write Ifocus on a place that I have beento recently or a place that hasa special meaning for me. Onthe latter, one place that is veryspecial for me is Newcastle myhome and place of work. Howeverit is not really the norm to holidayin your own city, and can youever really be a tourist on yourown turf? Well I think not. But intaking a leaf out of a famous travelwriter who ‘holidays’ once a yearin his own home town (New York)I am going to give a mini insidersguide to Newcastle.Perfect for day trippers who want to escapethe confides of Eldon Square or for thosefeeling the ‘credit crunch’ and maybe not ableto get to far flung places this year. As withmany UK cities the high street is the focus ofmany people when visiting a city and a fewother well known must see’s. Now Newcastlehas Northumberland St, the Big Market andthe Quayside to mention a couple, all greatin their own right but there is a lot more tosee and do. For the shopper, if you venturebeyond the brands on Northumberland St,you can pick up a huge range of unique andgreat buys. For those wanting vintage and one offshead to High Bridge St (just off the gorgeousGreys St). Attica is a shop that sells the mostmouth watering range of vintage clothingand furniture, it is like an Aladdin’s cavewith beautiful glittering objects commandingyour attention, and very reasonably pricedfurniture to give your home that retro urbanfeel. On leaving Attica you will be greetedwith a range of little boutiques sellingclothing that will give your wardrobe anunique edge at some bargain prices.Near Central Station are three greatNewcastle institutions crammed onto PinkLane. For the shopper there is Electric Sheepwith great art and clothing to boot. Near byis The Fourth - in my opinion the best pub inthe city offering a great range of drinks andfood in a laid back, chilled and understatedlystylish décor. This has to be on of thefriendliest pubs in the city. Stepping out thedoor at a weekend late you are faced with22. 23the Jazz Café, offering a great alternative tomore traditional nightclubs in the city. Now the Big Market is hardly my scene onan evening, but during the day it has a greatplace for meeting friends for a deliciousGreek lunch at very reasonable prices (withamazing service) - Café Neon. Not only is thefood lovely but it offers a chance to peoplewatch as the lives of city residents from everywalk of life are played out in front of you inthe Big Market.routine. I cannot possibly give an in-depthguide to Newcastle in so few words (itselfindicating just how much there is to do in thecity now and surrounding region). However Newcastle has so much to offerand see that maybe stopping in a hotel for anight or two and acting the tourist will openup the city beyond the confides of its centreand give you a whole new perspective on thecity, its residents and culture. But if Greek is not your thing how aboutcontemporary Italian on Pilgrim St atParadiso? A great place with a very wellhidden balcony which may not have the bestviews, but does offer great alfresco dining inthe sun. Whenever we visit cities for a breakit is usually the norm to explore as muchas we can, yet in our own cities we oftenlimit ourselves to the same places and samewww.outnortheast.com 23. Steve Pask – Testing Testing, One Two…healthfeatureGeT 24TeSTedHIV +/-?Last month I got married, or at leastcivilly partnered. Apart from being overthe moon just because I was able to telleveryone that I love this man, it was veryimportant for me because I’ve campaignedfor equal rights for years, and because Iwas making a commitment to be with thisguy for a long time.I’ve had three long-term male partners, andthe last two have both been HIV negative. Iwas with my last partner for thirteen years, and he remained that way throughout, and itis my every intention that the same will betrue for my current partner. The professionalsdescribe us as a ‘sero-discordant couple’, notvery romantic sounding, is it? But I believethat because we both know our own and theother’s HIV status, it makes it a lot easier for usto keep things that way.During my last brief spell of singledom, I useda well known gay social networking internetsite (alright, it’s a gay sex site, but socialnetworking sounds so much more refined!)and I decided to put my HIV status on myprofile for all to see, to avoid those awkwardconversations, or deciding whether to tell ornot. Amazingly, quite a number of guys didn’tbother to read that bit, but contacted me forsex anyway. On more than one occasion, when I said something like ‘oh, it’s good thatyou’re not bothered about the HIV then’, saidguy disappeared at the speed of light. Equally,I know there are lots of men on that same sitewho are HIV positive but don’t disclose it. Ikind of understand why, if people respondlike that, but think about it for a minute. If youwould have sex with someone as long as youdidn’t know his HIV status, but you wouldn’thave sex with someone if you know he’spositive, how sensible is that? Even worse, there are people who will have bareback sexwith someone, as long as they don’t knowthat he’s positive, I know because I’ve had atleast one guy say to me ‘it’s ok, I know I’malright, and you look healthy enough, so….’ Idon’t think he expected a safer sex lecture!Anyway, my point is this. If you’d asked memaybe fifteen years ago whether I thoughtpeople should get tested, I would have said‘no’ for lots of reasons. Now, though, none ofthose reasons hold. You can get a test and betold the result in less than half an hour. Onceyou know the result, you can get treatmentswhich are both a lot easier to take and a lotmore effective than they used to be. And youand any current or future partners can makeinformed decisions about the sort of sex youwant to enjoy, without putting either of youat risk. What a lot of people, either positiveor untested, don’t realise is that having anysexually transmitted infection combined withHIV is a bad idea. Most of them give the HIVa chance to progress much more faster than itwould on its own.So my message is GET TESTED! And to allthe guys who are willing to have to enjoy sexwith someone who you know is HIV positive, you are the good guys, and you’re probablya lot safer than the ones who think they’reprotecting themselves by refusing to sleepwith people like me!24. Fabulous Stomach with Keith Wardhealthfeature25200sit upshelp ?may give you muscles you can crack walnutson, it will do nothing to reduce the amountWill 200of fat stored on top of them. This meansthat people are disappointed with theirsit-ups a results, and in some cases they succeed inmaking the area more prominent rather thanday help reducing it. Abdominal fat is there becauseof excessive calorie consumption, so theonly way to get rid of it is to burn off thoseme achievecalories by following a balanced diet andperforming high-intensity exercise such asa flat running, swimming, cycling or aerobics.stomach? The false belief that performing hundredsof sit-ups a day is all that is required togain a flat stomach is perhaps the mostpopular myth I have to deal with.By performing sit-ups or ‘crunches’ you arehelping to strengthen and firm up the rectusabdominus muscle, more commonly knownas the six pack muscle. However, while thisThere is one trick, however, which can helpto give the appearance of a flatter stomach, regardless (within reason) of how muchabdominal fat you possess. Lying below therectus abdominus is another band of musclecalled the transversus abdominus. Sometimescalled the corset muscle, it helps to keep theback strong and compresses the abdomen.By exercising this muscle regularly, it canhelp to improve your posture and make thestomach appear flatter, even though youmay not have lost a single pound. To exercise the transversus, all you needto do is:Suck in your stomach, drawingyour navel towards your spineWhile your stomach is sucked in, do not holdyour breath, just keep breathing normally. You will know that you are doing this properlywhen you begin to feel a minor burningsensation in the deep stomach. This is thesign that the transversus has been engagedand is being worked. Initially, this can behard to do as many people instinctively wantto breathe in as they draw in the stomach, but with practice it gets easier. This technique is by no means a miraclecure but by performing it regularly, suchas in the car, watching television or sat atwork, it can help both flatten your stomachand improve your posture. Good posture notonly makes you look slimmer, it also helpsprotect your back against injury.www.outnortheast.com 25. Out NorthEast

Both were membersof the teachers’ pension scheme, whichprovides two times salary death in servicebenefits (£63,000 and £50,800). Eachwanted the other to benefit from these andtherefore had nominated each other as thebeneficiary. Both had (homemade) willswhich basically stated that everything wouldbe left to each other and if no survivingpartner, the deceased’s family with a smallamount of money being left to the RSPCA.During a meeting to discuss their mortgagewith one of Brighter Pink’s mortgage advisers, the consequences of this arrangement werehighlighted.Under English law, where two people dieand it is uncertain who survived the other, itis a general rule that the younger is assumedto have survived the elder. As Alison was theelder of the two, her assets including the£63,000 death in service benefits would beleft to Joanne which in turn, as she had alsodied, would be left to her family. Alison’sfamily would be left with nothing!Upon Brighter Pink’s advice Alison andJoanne made new wills to make thedistribution of their estate fairer and alsoestablished two discretionary trusts whichwere nominated as the beneficiaries of thedeath in service benefits. This increasesthe flexibility of their assets and appointstrustees to look after this money. Dr Mark Casey talks about his fear….of flyingopinionFeaR oFFLYInGIf you have ever flown you will sit in oneof two camps, either you will LOVE theentire experience or be more terrified ofit that than gay men are of ageing. Now Iused to belong in the ‘terrified’ group andsat there proudly so.You see I never let my fear of flying allow meto miss a flight, I mean I have missed quitea few flights, but never missed one throughthe ‘oh shit, I can’t possibly get on that tubeof metal full of highly flammable fuel that isgoing to hurtle at 500mph through the air’.Not once. That is not to say I have not hadany near misses, I can’t count the number ofassistants who have had to practically dragme onto a flight to ensure I actually get onthem (thank you BA and Virgin!).And Of course I am ever so grateful for this, otherwise I would have missed seeing somany amazing sights and meeting so manypeople right across the globe. But over timeas I have had to travel more for work and tosee friends who have fanned out all over theplace my fear of flying has diminished to thepoint where it was almost nil. So much sothat I had become the one half sniggering atthe ‘terrified’ and crying passengers waitingto be called for their flights - like hello, itsjust like getting on a bus, but slightly moreglamorous. But how the mighty fall.Very recently I was nipping off to the sun fora few days after a couple of stressful weeks, much deserved in my opinion. Now as wewere coming into land, at about 200 ft or sofrom the ground the pilot suddenly throttledthe engines and began to climb steeply, shit I thought. As a frequent flyer (oh howI hate that term, are you ever a frequenttrain-er, car-er?) I knew straight away allwas not right. Just to add to my knowledgethat hmmm, maybe this is not workingas it should be the stewardesses looked aslight shade of grey, which was an amazingachievement to show through their usualperma-tan state. For the next 15 minutes we held over thesea, no news off the captain and not a wordfrom the 200 deathly quiet passengers.Eventually the surprisingly cheerful captaininformed us that the wings were notworking right and that we had to hold untilthey would work (or until we ran out of fuelmaybe?) and that we would be going in foran emergency landing. Now at this point Iwould have given ANYTHING not to be onthat plane. For a further 15 minutes I satthere thinking of the reality that we mayactually land but then crash/flip over/burstinto flames etc.Yes I have seen far too many 1970sdisaster movies with eva Gardner. In the end all was good, the staffon the plane were great, the planelanded safely and the fire menwho followed the plane down therunway were gorgeous to boot!Sitting later that day drinking a very strongG&T I was reflecting on how different itcould have all been and on how I should notmock those still fearful of flying. But it alsoreminded me that we can easily forget howwe all once were as people and to mockthose who may still be like our old selves. It’s a bit like being lesbian or gay, sometimeswe can forget how hard it is accepting ourown sexualities or the difficulty of comingout to others. So I am trying to make amendfor my ways. If I ever see you crying intoyour fifth G&T at Gate 3 in the airport, Imay just nip over and join you for a drink aswe all need a little Dutch courage now andagain don’t we?28. Gareth Longstaff with a brief guide to the North East for New Studentsstudent featureOUT ONCAMPUSMany students use their time at University As a contrast there are lots of little pocketsas a way to cope with the anxieties andthrills of coming out as well as to buildnew social groups. The stereotypicalimage of the heterosexual North as aplace where football, beer and fightingdominate social and cultural life canmake being a queer student in the regionpretty daunting, especially when it comescommitting yourself to study and life herefor anything up to five years. However, when you look at the facts andfigures it is evident that a huge percentageof LGBT students stay on in the region afterfinishing their degree and it is not difficultto see why. The established scenes andfacilities are some of the best in the UKand what makes this area unique is itsability to nurture and sustain a real sense ofcommunity, solidarity and variety.Newcastle is the main student city and the30gay scene is thriving with over a dozenbars catering for all tastes. The ones whichattract a younger and more out going crowdtend to be The Bank, Switch, One, CampDavid and Gossip and the rather fabulousPowerhouse which is open until late mostnights of the week.of queerness in Newcastle which remainunique and completely tolerant; the newlyrefurbished Tyneside Cinema and CoffeeRooms, the Star and Shadow Cinema, Cafessuch as Royale, Paradiso and LaBoca (whichalso holds gay pride art events) as well asClone Zone to mention just a few. Both Theuniversities of Newcastle and Northumbriahave well established LGBT societies andthe beauty of being a student here is thatyou can become as involved as you like inLGBT culture with no pressure and pretence. The sense of variety in the region alsospreads to Sunderland and Middlesbrough, both cities have modern universitycampuses and if you look for it some greatLGBT groups and spaces. On Tuesdays inSunderland there is the perfect gay studentnight which is cheap and often the busiestin the region, Middlesbrough has a new gaynight ‘Pout’ which compliments a scene thathosts the usual stuff we all know and lovesuch a drag, karaoke and drinks promosweek in week out. Whilst Durham has oneof the oldest and best Universities in the UKit can be a little stuffy so most of the studentpopulation move between the larger citiesas the train links are regular and fast, whichmeans you will never be bored. The generalsense of LGBT visibility and inclusion is nowa common feature of life in the region andthe student population is an integral part ofthat, so get out there and explore what thereis on offer, you won’t be disappointed.30. Paul Corduex reviewsreaddead Famous.Ben elton,Black Swan 2002.Oh the heat! The tropical summer heat, just saps your energy. It’s so hot here next to the radiator watching the rain lashagainst the window, I can barely stay awake! Yes kids, it’sSummer and to prove it Big Brother has kicked off yet anotherround of freaky idiots, did they didn’t they (they so did)moments and edited highlights that manipulate thehousemate’s fragile public images.Controversial. I love it! Trust the camp Scottish homo to spit in theAsian guy’s face (seems like ages ago now doesn’t it?) and ruin it foreveryone! It’s all so predictable, so repetitive, so childish. So whydo I sit Summer after Summer watching the panto freak show that isBB? You couldn’t write it! Or could you?The first of this weeks offerings is the wittily titled Dead Famous(complete with goldfish staring out of their bowl to emphasizethe pun), by Ben Elton. The older amongst you may remember MrElton from his foul-mouthed, near-the-knuckle stand-up comedyof the 1980s. If not, then you may be surprised to learn that he isthe comedy writer behind The Thin Blue Line and Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s musical We Will Rock You.Dead Famous is a Number 1 best seller than cashes-in on the BigBrother mania that sweeps the land every year. It doesn’t make adirect reference to BB but is as close as can be without upsetting thelawyers at Channel 4. The book is a crime thriller set in a televisedhouse full of wannabes and wierdos. A murder is committed andthe impossible becomes possible as one-by-one the suspects areeliminated. It is so convincingly written that I actually find myselfconfusing the characters in the book with the people in this andother BBs!If you’re venturing abroad this summer, or you just want to makethe BB high last a little longer, buy this book, it’s a well writtensurprisingly clever whodunit that will entertain and involve youlong after Davina has tottered off the stage. Our Rating 5/5Saturday,Ian Mcewan.Cape, 2005.From a whole summer of thrills and spills, to one single dayof tight gripping action. Saturday by Ian McEwan. This is anstunning book and if you’re looking for escapism and writingat it’s very best then you need look no further. McEwan’s writingincludes the award-winning Atonement, which made it to the bigscreen and was shot –in part – in our very own Redcar.Although I found the film a little slow and self-indulgent,the clarity of the writing and characters shone though. With Saturday, McEwan has again put together an amazing story. Thistime told over the course of Saturday 15th February 2003, followingthe ‘day-off’ of eminent neurosurgeon Henry Perowne. Perowneis an intelligent man, a respected surgeon, and a dutiful son to hisAlzheimer’s suffering Mother as well as being a Father himself to twoyoung adults. I’m not in the habit of re-telling the plot of the booksI review but a little is essential here. Set in London, the book opensin the Perowne home, a large period house full of books and familyhistory. Perowne is awoken from his sleep in the early hours and seesa plane coming in to land across the city with one of its engines onfire.Immediately, McEwan has begun playing with images of terrorismand he doesn’t stop throughout the rest of the novel. We followHenry’s day as he fights his way through the anti-war demonstrationsto visit his Mum and then goes-on to play squash with a colleague. However the mood of the day and of the book is changed whenPerowne comes face to face with Baxter, the ‘baddy’ for want of abetter term, who’s impact on the story and on the family as a wholeis pivotal.McEwan’s control of the characters and what drives them is amazing,as is his ability to take a potentially mundane story and turn it intoan emotional roller-coaster ride. I felt genuine disappointment whenI turned the penultimate page and realised the story would soon beover. Read Saturday if you want to lose yourself in a story and beshown how to spin a masterly tale. Our Rating 2/532. Out NorthEast www.outnortheast.com

englishlads.comI remember writing in the last edition aboutthe difficulties of shooting outdoor scenes inthe UK especially in a poor summer!Since this year has been so variable I decideda visit to Spain was required with four lads forsome guaranteed sweaty bodies and hot passionatesex in the great outdoors! One of thewebsites members had kindly offered his Villafor us to use and it proved to be quite someplace; private and with very lush tropical gardens.I decided to do all our shoots at the Villarather than risk being discovered in the middleof the sand dunes! You can see a photographfrom one of the shoots with the four lads in thehot tub where we positively encouraged them toremove their trunks… as quickly as possible! Wehave some great content for the members overthe coming weeks, the sun seemed to bring outthe best, or should I say the worst of our modelsand we have some real horny, hot humping in 2sums, 3 sums and an orgy for everyone to enjoy. On our day off we had decided to go down to alocal beach for lunch, swimming and sunbathing, when we arrived the beach was packedwith mostly young Spanish lads, a few familiesand a few foreign tourists, but mostly seemed tobe local talent. Every one was in a great moodand lots of the groups of young lads were playingbeach tennis, football or volleyball, so therewas no shortage of flesh. As the day went on Iwas surprised how much nudity or quick flashesof cock was happening all over the place. Someof the lads playing beach tennis were constantlytrying to pull down the others shorts and sometimesthey succeeded leading to a great roar oflaughter from the friends. Then just fifty metersup the beach another group playing footballall ran to the sea and when in the shallows allpulled down their boardies and jumped in andswam naked for about 5 minutes!Needless to say a few people moved in for acloser look! We were no where near a nudistbeach, but you could have almost thought it was, perhaps after all I could have done my shootsin the quiet corner of the beach and caught allthe straight lads in the background playing theirgames.
