Page 8 – Top Title – The Bangshees and news from Hart Gablesnews in brief... news in briefBangsheesYou have probably heard theBANGSHEES, maybe at this yearsNorthern Pride, but what is the WomensDrumming Group all about…The idea for the group came from adrumming workshop organised bySheboom at Pride on Tyne in 1999. Agroup of women from Newcastle interestedin forming their own drumming groupmet in October 1999. There was a lotof organisational work covered in thefirst few months – writing a constitution,fundraising, lottery grant applications,seeking rehearsal accommodation, etc.After much discussion the group settledon a name: BANGSHEES.Eight years on and the band is wellestablished, with 25 women of all agesfrom 20s to 60s, working in a variety ofjobs and some retired. All activities to dowith the band are undertaken voluntarilyand within the constraints of workcommitments. There are always women onthe waiting list and we recruit regularly.Member subs, grants, and occasionalbusking pays for the instruments andpractice hall rent, and some of the manygigs that we play at are paid. We play atcharity and sports events and festivals,or busk for charity donations, and alwaysreceive much appreciation. The tunes weplay come from various sources, but thereare talented members who write tunes thatare just for us. Sometimes we play withother local bands.The Bangshees have a colourfuland interactive web site atwww.bangshees.comLGBT /Police/ Hart GablesCommunication InitiativeCleveland Police is committed to promoting a citizen focussed service to promotepositive relations between police and all groups in society.Officers from the Neighbourhood Safety Unit at Hartlepool Police together with supportfrom local ward based officers are working with Hart Gables to open an effectivecommunications forum – The aim is to improve access to services for the LGBTcommunity and to enable local police staff to gain a better understanding of issuesaffecting the LGBT community in Hartlepool.Sgt Chris Dawber from the Neighbourhood Safety Unit at Hartlepool Police said – “Our aim is to work with Hart Gables to develop a meaningful dialogue with the LGBTcommunity in Hartlepool – Research by Hart Gables locally and Stonewall nationallyhas illustrated that there is a reluctance in the LGBT community to report incidents topolice – We are actively working with Hart Gables to change this and ensure that theLGBT community in Hartlepool know that the police service is here to serve the wholecommunity. Issues such Domestic Violence and Anti – Social Behaviour and Hate Crimewill not be tolerated and will receive a prompt proactive response.Pc Ian Royle and I were invited to an open evening at Hart Gables recently andwe enjoyed an evenings open and frank discussion around policing and the LGBTcommunity.
