Steve Pask – Testing Testing, One Two…healthfeatureGeT 24TeSTedHIV +/-?Last month I got married, or at leastcivilly partnered. Apart from being overthe moon just because I was able to telleveryone that I love this man, it was veryimportant for me because I’ve campaignedfor equal rights for years, and because Iwas making a commitment to be with thisguy for a long time.I’ve had three long-term male partners, andthe last two have both been HIV negative. Iwas with my last partner for thirteen years, and he remained that way throughout, and itis my every intention that the same will betrue for my current partner. The professionalsdescribe us as a ‘sero-discordant couple’, notvery romantic sounding, is it? But I believethat because we both know our own and theother’s HIV status, it makes it a lot easier for usto keep things that way.During my last brief spell of singledom, I useda well known gay social networking internetsite (alright, it’s a gay sex site, but socialnetworking sounds so much more refined!)and I decided to put my HIV status on myprofile for all to see, to avoid those awkwardconversations, or deciding whether to tell ornot. Amazingly, quite a number of guys didn’tbother to read that bit, but contacted me forsex anyway. On more than one occasion, when I said something like ‘oh, it’s good thatyou’re not bothered about the HIV then’, saidguy disappeared at the speed of light. Equally,I know there are lots of men on that same sitewho are HIV positive but don’t disclose it. Ikind of understand why, if people respondlike that, but think about it for a minute. If youwould have sex with someone as long as youdidn’t know his HIV status, but you wouldn’thave sex with someone if you know he’spositive, how sensible is that? Even worse, there are people who will have bareback sexwith someone, as long as they don’t knowthat he’s positive, I know because I’ve had atleast one guy say to me ‘it’s ok, I know I’malright, and you look healthy enough, so….’ Idon’t think he expected a safer sex lecture!Anyway, my point is this. If you’d asked memaybe fifteen years ago whether I thoughtpeople should get tested, I would have said‘no’ for lots of reasons. Now, though, none ofthose reasons hold. You can get a test and betold the result in less than half an hour. Onceyou know the result, you can get treatmentswhich are both a lot easier to take and a lotmore effective than they used to be. And youand any current or future partners can makeinformed decisions about the sort of sex youwant to enjoy, without putting either of youat risk. What a lot of people, either positiveor untested, don’t realise is that having anysexually transmitted infection combined withHIV is a bad idea. Most of them give the HIVa chance to progress much more faster than itwould on its own.So my message is GET TESTED! And to allthe guys who are willing to have to enjoy sexwith someone who you know is HIV positive, you are the good guys, and you’re probablya lot safer than the ones who think they’reprotecting themselves by refusing to sleepwith people like me!24. Fabulous Stomach with Keith Wardhealthfeature25200sit upshelp ?may give you muscles you can crack walnutson, it will do nothing to reduce the amountWill 200of fat stored on top of them. This meansthat people are disappointed with theirsit-ups a results, and in some cases they succeed inmaking the area more prominent rather thanday help reducing it. Abdominal fat is there becauseof excessive calorie consumption, so theonly way to get rid of it is to burn off thoseme achievecalories by following a balanced diet andperforming high-intensity exercise such asa flat running, swimming, cycling or aerobics.stomach? The false belief that performing hundredsof sit-ups a day is all that is required togain a flat stomach is perhaps the mostpopular myth I have to deal with.By performing sit-ups or ‘crunches’ you arehelping to strengthen and firm up the rectusabdominus muscle, more commonly knownas the six pack muscle. However, while thisThere is one trick, however, which can helpto give the appearance of a flatter stomach, regardless (within reason) of how muchabdominal fat you possess. Lying below therectus abdominus is another band of musclecalled the transversus abdominus. Sometimescalled the corset muscle, it helps to keep theback strong and compresses the abdomen.By exercising this muscle regularly, it canhelp to improve your posture and make thestomach appear flatter, even though youmay not have lost a single pound. To exercise the transversus, all you needto do is:Suck in your stomach, drawingyour navel towards your spineWhile your stomach is sucked in, do not holdyour breath, just keep breathing normally. You will know that you are doing this properlywhen you begin to feel a minor burningsensation in the deep stomach. This is thesign that the transversus has been engagedand is being worked. Initially, this can behard to do as many people instinctively wantto breathe in as they draw in the stomach, but with practice it gets easier. This technique is by no means a miraclecure but by performing it regularly, suchas in the car, watching television or sat atwork, it can help both flatten your stomachand improve your posture. Good posture notonly makes you look slimmer, it also helpsprotect your back against injury.www.outnortheast.com 25. Out NorthEast
