sculptor, Johannes Schwartlander. Struck by the beauty <strong>of</strong><br />

the campus, his design incorporated historical elements and<br />

the natural grandeur <strong>of</strong> the area.<br />

The <strong>Honor</strong> <strong>Court</strong> was constructed solely through private<br />

gifts, and the philanthropy <strong>of</strong> local contractors who provided,<br />

at no cost, much <strong>of</strong> the labor and materials. Expertise in<br />

splitting boulders was provided by faculty in the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

Mackay School <strong>of</strong> Earth Sciences and Engineering and the<br />

design for the <strong>Honor</strong> <strong>Court</strong> was the work <strong>of</strong> the renowned<br />

architectural firm Backen, Arrigoni and Ross.<br />

Each year, names are engraved into the <strong>Honor</strong> <strong>Court</strong> in proud<br />

recognition <strong>of</strong> the accomplishments and support <strong>of</strong> those who<br />

<strong>Honor</strong> <strong>Court</strong><br />

contribute to excellence at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nevada</strong>.<br />

Individuals and organizations receiving the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

most prestigious awards or contributing major donations<br />

to the institution are recognized in displays carved <strong>of</strong> Sierra<br />

white granite throughout the <strong>Honor</strong> <strong>Court</strong>.<br />

Categories include the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents’ statewide award,<br />

Distinguished <strong>Nevada</strong>n, as well as <strong>University</strong> awards: <strong>Honor</strong>ary<br />

Degree, President’s Medal, F. Donald Tibbitts Distinguished<br />

Teacher, Distinguished Faculty, Distinguished Service,<br />

Foundation Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Outstanding Researcher, Classified<br />

Employee <strong>of</strong> the Year, and the top student award, the Herz<br />

Gold Medal.<br />
