Thisenables the trustees to planactivities which once startedmust be continued for severalyears to bring results. Two yearsago the trustees designated fundsto the main areas <strong>of</strong> activity in afive-year forecast. Designatedfunds can be redirected to otherprojects at the discretion <strong>of</strong> thetrustees.‘Free reserves’, or uncommittedfunds, are required to meetany emergency or shortfall inincome. £150,000 is consideredsufficient cover for 18 to 24months.• Scout <strong>Esperanto</strong> League <strong>of</strong><strong>Britain</strong> entrusted money to EABin 2002. If the Scout League in<strong>Britain</strong> has not been restartedwithin seven years the moneymay be used for other youthactivity.Investment policyThe Constitution states that thetrustees have power to makeinvestments as they see fit. Theirduty is to seek both adequateincome and capital growth. Atthe AGM in 2008, the membershipshowed an overriding wishfor the <strong>Association</strong> to hold assetsin socially responsible funds.Capital is invested in depositaccounts and unit trusts specificallydesigned for the charitysector, which are for the greaterpart socially responsible. Ihave participated in the organisation<strong>of</strong> many <strong>Esperanto</strong> events,including congresses, and <strong>Esperanto</strong>House inauguration.I was much involved in themove from London to WedgwoodCollege; and hope theCollege will emerge positivelyfrom its present difficulties; andthat our relationship will bestrengthened. I am fully committedto the continued progress <strong>of</strong>the Butler Library, which is aresource <strong>of</strong> international significance.I regard myself as belonging toa community and also to acampaigning movement; andbelieve that EAB’s progressdepends upon analysis, planning,imagination, and rigorous evaluation<strong>of</strong> initiatives. There is spacefor <strong>Esperanto</strong> within internationalistand radical structures.<strong>Esperanto</strong> is intrinsically linkedwith justice and Human Rights.EAB urgently needs moremembers, but must also relate tothose outside traditional organisationalgroupings. I believe that<strong>Esperanto</strong> is a unique linguisticand cultural phenomenon whichhas much to <strong>of</strong>fer to individualsand the world.The world is rapidly changing;we must react creatively, whileremaining true to our core values.Jean Bisset:Having been involved with<strong>Esperanto</strong> now for more thanforty years, I have obviously meta great many Esperantists from<strong>Britain</strong> and abroad. I feel it hasbeen an enriching experience,whether it has involved listeningto an erudite lecture delivered influent <strong>Esperanto</strong>, or welcoming ayoung foreign learner who hasEAB-Ìisdate • 7
