Global skimmed milkpowder prices are hovering aroundTurnaround for Delhi Milk SchemeFOR THE FIRST TIME in many years, Delhi Milk Scheme(DMS) has made a surprise turnaround, showinga working surplus for the year 2012-2013. It isexpected to record an operational surplus of Rs8-9 crore in 2012-13.According to Sri B.S. Beniwal, GeneralManager, DMS, "In the last few years, we havemanaged to bring all round efficiency in DMS, asa result of which the losses have come down andthere is an operational surplus. We have also$3,800-4,000 a tonne with chancesof them increasing further.“India, which has ample milkpowder stocks, can continueexporting about 10,000 tonnes amonth for the next few months,”said R.S. Sodhi, Managing Director,GCMMF. Since June last year, thetotal exports from the country areestimated at over 60,000 tonnes inthe just-ended fiscal. These exportsare largely destined to the milkdeficientSouth Asian countriessuch as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka andPakistan.managed to avail all the tax deductions and rebatesavailable to DMS from the government agencies,strengthened the milk procurement system andimproved the overall work culture in the scheme."DMS has milk production and packagingcapacity of 0.5 million litres per day, besides anetwork of 1,298 outlets in the National CapitalRegion (NCR). The government-owned dairy unithas 800 employees – however, the milk productionis only about 0.27 million litres per day.INDIAN DAIRYMAN31
