Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter Aug – Sep 2013 5What’s been happeningMYSTERY JAZZ IN JULY was a great adventure!Linda Wiese reports………..It was certainly a MYSTERY trip. Well done to the organising team of Jenny & John Madden andMyrene Hickey. How clever that after 2 hours of adventure, we should end up only 30 mins away, inQueanbeyan no less, and the refurbished Royal Hotel. We ended up with a full bus, too, which helped to make the day the success it was. Many thanks to all themembers who responded to my plea and filled the seats and to those who made the arduous journey interstateto join us there! The most fun was had guessing all morning about where we were headed. The surprise morning tea with scones & cream at Lanyon Homestead was lovely, despite the cold & wet. We’re actually a hardy lot, ever positive, always ready to tackle the challenges for the next live jazz set!Going South had most of the bus betting that lunch would be at Bredbo, or maybe Cooma, but as turn followedturn through the suburbs, the money (actually Kate & Russ’s jelly jubes) was on Rose Cottage Inn,until we sailed right by! Had to be Jerrabomberra Pub was the cry! All was quiet, though, as we turned intoQueanbeyan – surely here was not the country pub with open fire and rolling plains? All a ruse it turnsout, but a quite wonderful surprise. The MYSTERY band was revealed asvocalist Lisa McLelland with the John BlackTrio – John on keys, James Luke on bass, andblues drummer extraordinaire and currentPresident of the Blues Society, Mitch Preston. The music was excellent and Lisa is a greatvocalist. She sent along a note from the band:“Thank you so much for the opportunity toperform for your mystery bus tour. Wethoroughly enjoyed ourselves.Thank you also for the wonderful videocompilation of the day. It was great to seeeveryone enjoying themselves. The CJC certainly know how to have fun!”Bus driver Brian Rogers spent the afternoon withus and he passed along that he loves getting aCJC job as we always have such great music!PS. Don’t forget to check out the video on the CJC website, thanks to webmaster Garry.VALE – LARAINE GRAHAM (1943 – 2013)Canberra jazz vocalist Laraine Graham passed away on 31 May. Laraine was a member of the CJC from the mid1970s and there is still video footage around today of Laraine singing with the Capital Jazz Band at the St. ValentinesDay Festival in 1990. Friend Chris Hopman in his tribute to Laraine wrote: “….A kindred soul, the consummate unpretentiousentertainer, blessed with a velvet voice and effervescent personality…. ”.
