Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter Aug – Sep 2013 2Dear members,PRESIDENT’S REPORTAt the end of our financial year, I can only say that the Club is going ahead in leaps and bounds. Ourmembership is the best it has been for many years, and still increasing. It is so nice to welcome newmembers and also to say hello again to old members who had fallen off for some time. This is all due to theexcellent work of the Committee and their continued enthusiasm. The big event last month was of course the Mystery Trip. This event each year has been the work of Jennyand Myrene, also John. Each has other duties in the Club and I will be mentioning those things in myAnnual Report. But to get back to this year’s Mystery Trip I have to say that I did not hear one commentagainst it – everyone enjoyed it.The morning tea at Lanyon was a great innovation even with the rain shower. Then the trip towardsQueanbeyan had us all guessing. The re-decorated Royal Hotel was the big surprise. They did us proud andthe music supplied by John Black , Lisa McLelland, James Luke and Mitch Preston was just perfect. Earlierin the week it seemed we would have a half empty bus, however our trusty Secretary Linda sent out areminder about the event and also mentioned that we were doing our best to provide different activities forour members at very cheap rates and the result was that we had a full bus and several others arrived later aswell. So far this year all our events have been well attended and so we can afford to subsidise buses to such events, thanks to the diligent work of our Treasurer Ron.My duties as president are very light these days and I am very grateful for all the help. Mind you I stillalways take membership forms in my handbag whenever I go to a Jazz event. The Big Band Series at the Southern Cross Club has been very entertaining and largely successful. This isentirely due to the hard work of Lynda Wade. Having some local amateur groups as well as the moreprofessional ones from Sydney has been excellent. The styles of the different jazz eras have been great tohear. That’s all for now folks, see you at the AGM.CheersMargaretMargaret MoriartyPhone: 02 6286 3936 Email: mmo59530@bigpond.net.auNOTE FROM THE EDITOR. My apologies for the lateness of the newsletter. Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter Aug – Sep 2013 4MARK THESE DATES IN YOUR DIARY!!Jazz at JamisonSunday 18 August 2013Sunday 20 October 2013Sunday 10 November 2013Music: 1.00pm – 4.00pmWe have just three more appearances of the Canberra Jazz Club bandremaining for this year at the Southern Cross Club, Jamison. These are greatafternoons of live jazz and we have been drawing terrific crowds so pleasekeep up your support. For our musician members who may be attending, the sit-in bracket is backfor the third set so don’t forget to bring along your instruments.Playing for us on 18 August will be Tony Thomas on trumpet, Ron Cook on sax,Jim Styles on banjo, Tony Madden on tuba and Ian Hill on drums. What a great line-up and as Tony reminisced, this was the final line-up of the ever-popular BlackMountain Jazz Band (minus the late Jim Hilson) for it’s wrap-up gig at the Dickson Tradies on 29 November2009. Don’t miss this special opportunity to hear trad at it’s best!20 October will see “Angela Lount and the Fedoras” playing for us. They receivedgreat reviews for their appearance at the recent Merimbula Jazz Festival and yes, they are playing atthe Brassey on 8 September but this is another opportunity to catch the band. It’s a slightly differentline-up on this occasion and we’ll have more details next newsletter. We had to move the planneddate back one week and this gig unfortunately now clashes with the Moruya Jazz Festival so our apologiesto those members who will be away at the Festival.10 November is a work in progress, more details next newsletter (see the note on page 6).Why not join us for lunch in the Bistro from 12.30?As usual, we will reserve tables reserved alongside the lounge area where the band will be playing soyou wont have to miss a beat. If you would like to make a booking for lunch, please phone Committeemember Barbara Newman on 6231 5406 or email to barbaric@aapt.net.auYOUR SUPPORT OF LIVE JAZZ IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATEDSouthern Cross Club, cnr Catchpole & Bowman Streets, Macquarie(For the information of members & guests)

Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter Aug – Sep 2013 5What’s been happeningMYSTERY JAZZ IN JULY was a great adventure!Linda Wiese reports………..It was certainly a MYSTERY trip. Well done to the organising team of Jenny & John Madden andMyrene Hickey. How clever that after 2 hours of adventure, we should end up only 30 mins away, inQueanbeyan no less, and the refurbished Royal Hotel. We ended up with a full bus, too, which helped to make the day the success it was. Many thanks to all themembers who responded to my plea and filled the seats and to those who made the arduous journey interstateto join us there! The most fun was had guessing all morning about where we were headed. The surprise morning tea with scones & cream at Lanyon Homestead was lovely, despite the cold & wet. We’re actually a hardy lot, ever positive, always ready to tackle the challenges for the next live jazz set!Going South had most of the bus betting that lunch would be at Bredbo, or maybe Cooma, but as turn followedturn through the suburbs, the money (actually Kate & Russ’s jelly jubes) was on Rose Cottage Inn,until we sailed right by! Had to be Jerrabomberra Pub was the cry! All was quiet, though, as we turned intoQueanbeyan – surely here was not the country pub with open fire and rolling plains? All a ruse it turnsout, but a quite wonderful surprise. The MYSTERY band was revealed asvocalist Lisa McLelland with the John BlackTrio – John on keys, James Luke on bass, andblues drummer extraordinaire and currentPresident of the Blues Society, Mitch Preston. The music was excellent and Lisa is a greatvocalist. She sent along a note from the band:“Thank you so much for the opportunity toperform for your mystery bus tour. Wethoroughly enjoyed ourselves.Thank you also for the wonderful videocompilation of the day. It was great to seeeveryone enjoying themselves. The CJC certainly know how to have fun!”Bus driver Brian Rogers spent the afternoon withus and he passed along that he loves getting aCJC job as we always have such great music!PS. Don’t forget to check out the video on the CJC website, thanks to webmaster Garry.VALE – LARAINE GRAHAM (1943 – 2013)Canberra jazz vocalist Laraine Graham passed away on 31 May. Laraine was a member of the CJC from the mid1970s and there is still video footage around today of Laraine singing with the Capital Jazz Band at the St. ValentinesDay Festival in 1990. Friend Chris Hopman in his tribute to Laraine wrote: “….A kindred soul, the consummate unpretentiousentertainer, blessed with a velvet voice and effervescent personality…. ”.

Canberra Jazz Club Newsletter Aug – Sep 2013 6What’s been happening (...continued)OUR JUNE ‘JAZZ AT JAMISON’ GIG WAS GREAT!Once again, it’s a big thank-you to Club member and musician, David Lole. David bought us theterrific ‘Vintage Quine’ in April and he followed that up with a superb presentation from‘Swing’n’Jazz’ in June. This seven-piece band was a mixof David’s very popular festivalband, the David Lole Syncopaths;his Merimbula Jazz Festival band,Swing’n’Jazz; and our local musiciansTony Thomas and Jim Lole.Playing on the day was Reg Packer(banjo), Alan Richards(drums), Don Blainey (tuba), BillBeasley (trombone, vocals), TonyThomas (trumpet, vocals), JimLole (sax) and David Lole (piano). There was around 70 of us there and most did lunch, much to the appreciation of the new Club manager whowas very impressed with the turnout. We were, again, avery enthusiastic crowd (including some youngsters visitingthe Club!) which the band greatly appreciated.Further thanks are in order to Myrene for the great raffleprizes and to all our members who, as usual, gaveso generously for the raffle. Many thanks, too, to theLole families who graciously billeted the interstate musicians during their stay in Canberra.LOOK OUT FOR AN EXTRA ‘JAZZ AT JAMISON’ GIG IN NOVEMBERWe are pleased to announce an unexpected, but welcome, ‘Jazz at Jamison’ gig for Sunday 10 November. In appreciation of all our new members, your Committee has decided to squeeze in another live jazz event beforeyear’s end. Jim Lole has kindly offered to organise a trad jazz afternoon for us and we’ll have details nextnewsletter.Meanwhile, a word from your Committee. Firstly, thanks to the ongoing support of our sponsor, theCanberra Southern Cross Club, we’ve managed to organise 6 paying gigs at Southern Cross Club, Jamison forthis year. The 3 gigs held to date have all been very well attended, for which we sincerely thank our members– our Club couldn’t exist without you – but we do need this to continue. We mentioned in a recent email to members that Southern Cross Club Jamison was reviewing it’s entertainmentprogram in light of poor attendances at many of the Sunday gigs (not ours). Great news!! New manager,Brian Dobson, is prepared to continue supporting the Canberra Jazz Club gigs for at least the next year. The reason for that support, however, is the fact we bring in such good crowds and a lot of us also havelunch while we are there. It goes without saying that if our good attendance record was to slip, the Jamisonclub may well have to pull it’s financial support for our future gigs – this would severely limit the capacity ofyour Committee to bring you the very full calendar of events which we all currently enjoy. So, please, keep upthe good work and help us to keep the jazz we like alive in Canberra.
