C S F I / New York CSFIPreparednessWe asked the question:How well prepared do you think MFIs are to handle the risks youhave identified?MFIs are seen tobe less wellprepared thanbeforeFive per cent of respondents answered well, 82 per cent gave a mixed reply, and 13per cent said poorly. In 2008, 27 per cent said well, 68 per cent said mixed and 5 percent said poorly. Among the reasons given for this more negative result, respondentssaid that MFIs realised too late that they would be impacted by the economic crisis,particularly by its effect on credit and funding. Respondents who gave a positivereply stressed the quality of management and the strength of institutional support.Poorly13%Well5%Mixed82%Emmanuelle Javoy, managing director of Planet Rating in France, said that “overall,one third of MFIs have systems, procedures and performance that should reallyallow them to manage the above stated risks without major problems, while anotherhalf have decent systems or procedures or performance, but that might take a littletime to adapt to changing situations”.A breakdown of responses by category shows practitioners to be the most optimistic,with ten per cent of them believing that MFIs were well prepared. Although 18 percent of regulators thought MFIs were well prepared, a further 18 per cent of themanswered poorly.
