Remember, thisis in line with Wawasan <strong>Brunei</strong> 2035 that wants the country to have welleducated and highly skilled people. It is all about growing our <strong>Brunei</strong>anhuman capital. Surely, it is not too much to ask you all to do your parts inproviding jobs <strong>for</strong> the locals. We have local companies holding contracts worthin the tens of millions, but still have very poor record on career developments.Please do not <strong>for</strong>get your responsibility on these. If you can’t or just simplywon’t do it, there are others who can and will!<strong>The</strong> Energy Department and some of you here have worked successfullyto provide apprenticeship to locals who are looking <strong>for</strong> jobs within the oil andgas industry. We started with the young energy graduates or YEG in short, thendue to popular requests, extended the scheme to HND holders and may yet beextended further to those with lower qualifications. <strong>The</strong> scheme’s main aim is toprovide the job seekers with enough industry experience so that they would bemore marketable in the future. Your support is crucial if this initiative were togo on working as intended. Indeed out of the 200 or so that we havesuccessfully matched with the various companies, some have already beengiven permanent jobs! Again, please look at these placements with yourcompanies as part of your corporate social responsibilities – not as an easy wayof obtaining short term or cheap work<strong>for</strong>ces.Ladies and Gentlemen.Let me share with you now as to why I am extremely disappointed with some ofthe big companies operating in <strong>Brunei</strong> Darussalam.I recently visited a drilling company that has held contract with BSP <strong>for</strong>18 years now valued at almost B$ 840 million. 18 years and only 27 % of theemployees are local! <strong>The</strong>y also paraded in the meeting, the local owners whothey said are key persons in the company and expected me to be impressed!<strong>The</strong>se local owners did not even say a word during the meeting.
