British Motoring Club New Orleans, Morris Gazette January 2012President’s Message by Karen MurrayI hope that everyoneenjoyed the holiday seasonwith family andfriends. This season is atime to rejoice with yourfamily and extend helpto others less fortunate. We were so fortunate toenjoy our 4 children and spouses and 8 grandchildrenwho traveled to the city at different times. We were also blessed with the birth of our 9thgrandchild, a beautiful baby doll named Ellie AnnLandry. Our grandchildren now range from 14years to just a few weeks. Each child is so uniqueand a blessing to have. Thanks to all of the ―friends‖ that helped make2011 such a fun and exciting year for the club. The 2011 Board of Directors was one of the best Ihave ever had the privilege to work with. Everymember tackled an event or activity for the club toenjoy. I am sorry to lose Bob Post and WallyFriloux on the 2012 Board but do look forward toworking with new board members Jack Kennedyand Steven Lindsley. In the 2011 January/February newsletter Iprinted the following: ―As a former American Historyteacher, I believe that each new Presidentshould have a plan of action or ideas to work onand hopefully accomplish during their term. Hereare some of the ideas this board has started workingon for the 2011 year: ― Below are the goals setin 2011 and the outcome of those goals.1. Updating and adding new links to theBMCNO website. Chad Wicker has worked onthis all year. Many of the new links have alreadybeen introduced. Another session will be introducedbefore February. This is an ongoing jobthat Chad has agreed to do as Web Master. Go tothe website and check it out.2. Updating members with a “101Website”session on how to use the website. This wasdone at all meetings and gatherings.3. Have a speaker or presentation at everyclub meeting. Members presented each monthon projects that they were currently working on atall meetings.4. Have more sharing and discussion time atclub meetings. I feel that we did this to an extentbut could add more time at all meetings.5. Add new member activities. New memberactivities this year were: Feliciana Cruise, E.E.Reynolds Rallye at a Race Track, Cars of Yesteryears,Mississippi Cruise with English MotoringClub of Mississippi, Dinner N’ a Movie, and EAABaton Rouge Fly In.6. Include one club activity in conjunctionwith the Mississippi British Car Club. EMC .EMC organized a weekend tour of Mississippi includingBMCNO members. Each group had 18participants.7. Increase more local community activitiesand exposure of BMCNO. The club partici-Page 2

We were exposed in twoparts of the state at the same time.8. Work on more PR for the club. Businesscards and club brochures were updated and distributedto all members either in person or viamail.9. Increase membership in the club. The clubadded 26 new members this year ending the fiscalyear in June with 146 members. The last timethe club surpassed 140 was in 2009.10. Increase attendance at club meetings andfunctions.Attendance is going strong at all locations. Some months are more heavily attendedthan others due to weather or holidays.11. Have a minimum of 4 Delgado Tech Sessionduring the year. The club was so busythis year that the board felt only 2 Tech Sessionswas necessary.12. Encourage individual member “Help Sessions”to work on cars. Some members did callfor help with projects throughout the year. I dofeel this could increase with more organizationand communication from members.14. Establish community service projectssponsored by the club for non-profit organizations. The club added a new community serviceproject for the Battered Women’s Clinic. Twolarge bags of hotel amenities were delivered to theBattered Women’s Clinic. Also, 165 pounds offood were delivered to the Second Harvesters FoodBank after the Christmas Party.15. “Show & Tell” at all club meetings. Thiswas conducted at one meeting on the South Shore. This should be added to all satellites a couple oftimes a the year. The 2012 Board of Directors Goals will be postedin the February newsletter. If there is an activitythat you would like to see happen please contact aboard member. All suggestions are welcome.REMEMBER—this is your club.13. British Motoring Club New Orleans, Morris Gazette January 2012Baton Rouge Gathering by Rick Huber, BMCNO Vice PresidentSeven of us braved thefoul weather duringThanksgiving week forthe monthly BatonR o u g e g a t h e r -ing. Relatively newmember Tim Welbornjoined us for the firsttime in awhile. He'sdefinitely got the fever, looking for a place to store the two MG Midgetshe bought from a shop near Pineville recently. And then there's the Lotus Europa hehas his eye on. Welcome to the club! One key topic for the evening was John Pearsontalking about the EE Reynolds Rallye, and he couldn't conceal the ear-to-ear grin heobtained while driving his TR3 around theCircuit Grand Bayou track. The GooglemapsRallye Don put together was great fun, butthe day belonged to driving fast and turninghard. The track time turned out to be waybetter than it sounded, a delightful experiencefor all. That sure sounded like a great outingfor the club, sorry more of us from the BatonRouge area weren't around to participate.Next up was talk about upcoming events withthe Christmas party very soon, and then kickingoff the new year with 4 events in the firsttwo months before car show month again inMarch. My how the time goes by. The nextkey topic was Milton telling us about hisplanned Baton Rouge Cruise event scheduledfor January 28. He and Annette are going todrive the route this weekend and have itready to go by the Christmas party. We talked about projects for awhile, Rick hashis MGB engine bay primed and the transmissionrebuilt and ready to go back in, Bob'sjust about finished rewiring his TF andshould have it ready for the show, Milton'sbeen working on some of his non-British stuffand wouldn't tell us anything about it, Reg isan ignition switch shy of having his TD on theroad, and Bill didn't want to spoil his dinnerwith talk about progress on his TR7.We had a good time, and when we were finished, the downpour had stopped and we wereable to stay dry getting back out to our carsand back home to get ready for Thanksgiving. This writer sure is thankful for all of youfriends in the BMCNO and for all the fun wehave together with our little British cars.MARK YOUR CALENDAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Vicksburg Cruise February 25th —26thCars will leave their respective locations andcaravan to Riskey’s in downtown Vicksburgfor lunch. British Motoring Club New Orleans, Morris Gazette January 2012E.E.Reynolds Rallye 2011 by Don MarpeYou have read the his-given. The race control starter waived the carstory of the E.E. ReynoldsRallye and theinvitation to this year’srallye in the previousnewsletters. Now weDon Marpe, BMCNO Secretaryhave one more rallye toadd to the recordbook. There were 15out after the lead car (which happened to be aFerrari) took off to set the pace. The first lap wasat a normal driving pace to allow the tires andbrakes to warm up. The following laps were describedby one driver as spirited. After approximately30 minutes, the checkered flag was waivedand the cars came off the track. The discussionsamong the drivers right after they got out of theircars that took part in the rallye this year and theycars made it clear that this was their favorite partof the event. The discussion was so lively, thateveryone had to be forced to leave the track to goto lunch. When members of the Big Meal Clubhave to be forced to go eat, they must have beenhaving fun.The cars caravanned to Café Lafourche whereall ended up at the right destination. The BatonRouge Group had one car, the North Shore Grouphad 2 cars, the Lafayette Group had 5 cars andthe New Orleans group had 7 cars. They allstarted out at locations in their area and followedthe Google Map driving directions to pass throughDonaldsonville in route to the final destination ofthe Circuit Grand Bayou Race Track. People inDonaldsonville must have thought the British hadlunch was served. During the lunch, BonnieMarpe (the independent accounting firm representative)tabulated the results. The Best of Groupaward for Baton Rouge went to John Pearson whocompleted the route within 5 minutes of the targettime of 105 minutes. The Best of Group award forthe North Shore went to Wally Friloux with atime just 3 minutes off the target time. There wasa tie for the Best of Group award for New Orleans.invaded their town with all of the little BritishCars passing through.Once all of the cars arrived at the race track, thetrack manager held a brief Drivers Meeting to discussthe safety rules and expectations for thetouring laps. The cars were staged like real racecars and the ―Start your engines‖ command wasPage 9

British Motoring Club New Orleans, Morris Gazette January 2012Both Alan Mocklin and Dan Melesurgo completedthe route within 1 minute of the target time. TheBest of Event award went to Mike Baker from Lafayette, who completed the route exactly on thetarget time. Each of the Best of Group awardwinners received a 2011 E.E. Reynolds Rallyeplaque and the club paid their $25 track fee.Mike Baker was awarded the traveling E.E. ReynoldsRallye Loving Cup trophy. Mike so enjoyedthe event that he offered to restore the past traditionof the winner being the coordinator for nextyear’s event. Don Marpe will be glad to help himnext year. You will be able to tell by the pictures that arewith this article, that a good time was had by allPage 10

British Motoring Club New Orleans, Morris Gazette January 2012Lapping Days” at the Circuit Grand Bayou by Don MarpeIf You Thought The Reynold’sRalley Was Fun, Just WaitDon Marpe, BMCNO SecretaryPart of the Reynolds Ralley Event was to take―Touring Laps‖ around the Circuit Grand BayouRace Track. The lap speed was determined by alead car from the race track and was described asspirited by some drivers and leisurely by others. So what if you could determine your own speedaround this race track. The club is working on settingup ―Lapping Days‖ with the Circuit GrandBayou staff that would let you drive your car asfast as you dare or just have some more TouringLaps. This would be less controlled so the driverswould need to meet the race tracks safety requirements. That means that your car would need tomeet the Tech Inspection requirement and youwould need a certified helmet. The cost for an afternoon(two or three 20 minute sessions) of drivingwould be $75. For more info on the requirements,go to www.circuitgrandbayou.com and lookat Lapping / Solo Time Trials. If you are interested, contact Don Marpe (bdmarpe@att.net).If you think you have mastered the Circuit GrandBayou race track and want to try somewhere else, the club is also working with the staff at NOLAMotorsports Park on a visit to their new facility inAvondale. The visit would include a tour of thenew facilities, a couple of Touring Laps aroundboth loops of the new track and a brief presentationby the track staff. After the tour, there wouldbe a British Car Owner Challenge Race on thenew fully functional Go-Cart Track at the facility. No trophy for the winner, just bragging rights. Ifyou want more info on the track, go towww.nolamotor.com. If you are interested, contactDon Marpe.Have you ever lusted over someone else’s BritishCar? The club may be able to help you satisfythat lust. Later in the year, the club will host a―Swap My Ride‖ event. During this event, youwill be able to negotiate with other British CarOwners in the club for a short leisurely drive intheir car. In exchange, they will get a short leisurelydrive in your car. More info on that in futurenewsletters.Rick Huber’s MGB at the 2011 Delgado Restoration ClassPage 11
