Immediate release19 August 2011<strong>Barrow</strong> <strong>wind</strong> <strong>farm</strong> <strong>generates</strong> <strong>first</strong> <strong>power</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> grid<strong>Vattenfall</strong> yesterday evening generated <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> electricity from its <strong>wind</strong> <strong>farm</strong> off<strong>Barrow</strong>-in-Furness with <strong>Barrow</strong>’s Mayor hailing <strong>the</strong> achievement as an endorsemen<strong>to</strong>f Cumbria’s low carbon energy strategy.<strong>Vattenfall</strong> started offshore construction of <strong>the</strong> Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm in 2010and a little over a year later has exported <strong>power</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Grid for <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> timeat 7pm on Thursday, 18 August from turbine D1. When finished <strong>the</strong> 30-turbine,150MW, <strong>wind</strong> <strong>farm</strong> should generate enough <strong>power</strong> every year <strong>to</strong> meet <strong>the</strong> equivalentelectricity needs of around 100,000 UK households.David Hodkinson, <strong>Vattenfall</strong>’s Country Manager, said: "The <strong>first</strong> production ofelectricity from our 30-turbine Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm is a great achievementfor our team and suppliers. Some of <strong>the</strong> electricity will be finding its way <strong>to</strong> <strong>Barrow</strong>through <strong>the</strong> national grid, forming ano<strong>the</strong>r bond between <strong>the</strong> <strong>Vattenfall</strong> and <strong>the</strong> localcommunity, adding <strong>to</strong> those we have already established including local job creationduring construction and over <strong>the</strong> operating lifetime of <strong>the</strong> project. We are also proudthat Ormonde has supported UK jobs fur<strong>the</strong>r afield, through foundationmanufacturing, <strong>wind</strong> turbine pre-assembly and engineering and project support.Ormonde is <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> commercial scale project <strong>to</strong> use 5MW <strong>wind</strong> turbines onfabricated steel 'jacket foundations', and sets <strong>the</strong> scene for <strong>the</strong> large-scaledeployment of such technology in <strong>the</strong> rapidly expanding UK offshore <strong>wind</strong> market.”He added: “Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm is <strong>the</strong> third <strong>Vattenfall</strong> project in UK waters<strong>to</strong> generate green, clean electricity for UK consumers. <strong>Vattenfall</strong> started works <strong>to</strong> lay <strong>the</strong> export cable which will carry green electricity from <strong>the</strong> <strong>wind</strong> <strong>farm</strong> <strong>to</strong>shore in January this year and in July last year it completed <strong>the</strong> installation of 31 foundations for <strong>the</strong><strong>wind</strong> turbines.About <strong>the</strong> RE<strong>power</strong> 5MWith a rated output of 5 megawatts and a ro<strong>to</strong>r diameter of 126 meters, <strong>the</strong> 5M is one of <strong>the</strong> largestand most <strong>power</strong>ful <strong>wind</strong> energy turbines in <strong>the</strong> world. The ro<strong>to</strong>r consists of three ro<strong>to</strong>r blades, eachone 61.5 metres in length, and covers <strong>the</strong> area of two soccer fields; <strong>the</strong> nacelle is <strong>the</strong> size of twohouses.
