Ford and the City of Westland will hold the eighth annual 5K fun run/walk 9 a.m. Saturday, May 19, to benefit the Karmanos Cancer Institute. The event will start at the Bailey Recreation Center. ' Starfish Family Services and the National Marrow Donor Program are encouraging community members to save lives by registering with the NMDP to be a marrow donor, A marrow donor drive will take place 1:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at Starfish Family Services' headquarters on Hiveley Road in Inkster. Starfish is conducting the donor drive in honor of Dr. Ouida Cash, the organization's chief executive officer, who was diagnosed with leukemia in February. Cash has a 29-year history in leading human service agencies that help children and families in Inkster, western Wayne County and beyond. She is currently receiving care and treatment at Oakwood Healthcare System and Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. Through the NMDP network, Cash's donor was identified. She is scheduled to receive her Marvaso's caters LeBlanc's bill party A Westland restaurant owner had a chance to show off his cooking skills when he catered a "First Bill Luncheon" for State Rep. Richard LeBlanc, D-Westland. Marvaso's Italian Grille provided food for the party, a tradition in the Michigan House of Representatives that calls for a lawmaker to host a luncheon after his-or her first bill passes the House. "It was great to be able to bring a taste of Westland, and a taste of Italy, to the Capitol in honor of my first bill passing," LeBlanc said. "I'd like to thank Richard LeBlanc's first bil! passed the House in March gtliajfotej^-17. George Marvaso for serving up his delicious food to my fellow lawmakers. "Judging by the amount of food my colleagues consumed, Marvaso's was a huge hit." LeBlanc's first bill passed the House in March with a vote of 93-17. Applications accepted for WOW scholarship The Women of Westland are currently accepting applications for the organization's Barbara Douglas Scholarship. The scholarship is available to women who live or work in Westland and are at least 21 years old. Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for undergraduate study. Applicants will be judged on academic performance, educational goals, leadership and bone marrow drive honors Cash transplant this month. "It's odd not knowing about the person who will be saving my life - an anonymous hero," said Cash. "This is what each person who signs up at Starfish to be a donor will be." Participants at the May 10 donor drive will take part in an easy, noninvasive process that involves a self-administered cheek swab. Anyone who meets the health guidelines and is age 18 through 60 can join the registry. After completing a brief health questionnaire, registrants collect a small sample of cheek cells (done with a simple swab) and sign a consent form. The whole process takes just 15 minutes. Each year, thousands of patients are diagnosed with lifethreatening blood diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma as well as certain immune system and genetic disorders. Blood-forming cells are immature cells that can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
