www.hometownlife.com Observer & Eccentric (Sunday, May 6, Z007 (W) A9 Get out and vote on Tuesday On Tuesday, Westland residents will go to the polls to elect those people they believe will steer their school district through the troubled waters now facing public education. It is a vote that should not be taken lightly. Knowledge of what is happening in education as a whole and in local school districts specifically should play into voters' decisions. It did with us in our consideration of who would best serve the interest of the students and taxpayers in our endorsements this year: Wayne-Westland Schools In the Wayne-Westland Community Schools, five candidates are seeking the two four-year terms that will be filled in the election. Joining incumbents Martha Pitsenbarger and Skip Monit on the ballot are Bhagwhan Dashairya, Brian Mulligan and T. Cortez Spann Jr. In looking at the issues facing the district, we believe Pitsenbarger and Monit should get the nod from voters. Pitsenbarger has served on the board for 12 years. She has been there in the lean times of early Proposal A and has a clear understanding of what the district now faces as its fund equity disappears. You need only look at the schools to see Monit's commitment to the district. As a tri-chair of the 1998 bond committee, he helped get voters to approve the $108 million request that brought renovations and improvements to every school in the district. There's no mistaking who these two candidates represent - the students. As members of the board, they have made the decisions that have put the students and their education first. As a result, the district has continued to tighten its belt in the face of less than sufficient revenue and spiraling costs to preserve the educational program. They also have a strong working knowledge of the school district and the role of the school board. They are prepared to make the difficult decisions needed to keep the district moving forward. We urge voters to re-elect Skip Monit and Martha Pitsenbarger to the Wayne-Westland Board of Education. Livonia Public Schools In the Livonia Public Schools, six candidates are campaigning for two four-year terms and one one-year term on the board. Two candidates are running for the one year remaining of the term that had been held Trustee Kevin Whitehead, who resigned earlier this year after his residency was challenged. The candidates are Patrice Mang and Gregory Oke. (Candidate Ralph McComber has withdrawn from the race, though his name is on the ballot.)
