Opening ThoughTsTimely Access to a Family PracticePhysician or Nurse PractitionerIs Critical to Your HealthHelp us help you to identify healthproblems early to keep you healthyand cost of healthcare lower foryou and your employerTimely access to family practice services is criticalfor early detection of your health problems. One of our objectives at MGH is to providecare for you in the lowest cost setting. Forexample, an office visit is much less costly than an emergency room or walk-inclinic visit. And, although one of our objectives is to lower cost, an even moreimportant objective is to ensure you receive care that is properly managed on atimely basis. This helps ensure early detection of problems and provides the bestpossible continuity of care to keep you healthy and out of the hospital. Our emergency room is one of the busiest in Indiana with over 43,000 visitseach year. Many people in our Healthcare Community still use the emergencyroom for family practice services. The emergency room is not the appropriateplace to obtain family practice services, unless it is an emergency medical condition.Using the emergency room may be very frustrating because it is not theproper setting to address your health issues and it is very costly.Emergency room physicians are trained to address acute emergency issuesand refer follow-up to family practice physicians. Family practice physicians andnurse practitioners are better trained to manage your overall health and providethe continuity of care you deserve and need to remain healthy. For many years, our Healthcare Community did not have a sufficient numberof family practice physicians and nurse practitioners, so it was very difficult tobe accepted as a patient. Today, however, we have much more availability in ourHealthcare Community, so you can now be more easily accepted as a new patient. In the future, if you are seeking family practice services please call our familypractice offices or call our Physician Referral Line at 765.660.6444, which isavailable Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm excluding holidays. We willget you in to be seen in a timely manner. Please make a personal commitment to help us help you.Together we can make a positive impact on your personal healthas well as the overall cost of healthcare.Paul L. “IMPROVEaccess to carein lowestcost setting”Referral Line, we can provide you a list of practitioners accepting new patients and schedule your firstappointment during the same call if you select one of our MGH practitioners. Our physician referral line continues to provide information for obstetrics/gynecology, pediatricians, psychiatrist, surgeons, cardiologists and various other specialists who are on MGH’s medical staff.◆ Expansion of Bridges to Health (“Bridges”): We provide Bridges (our Healthcare Community’s freeclinic for uninsured patients) with ample office space at Kem View Medical Center, enabling Bridges toenhance its outreach to provide access to care for those in need. This donation of space, along with our yearlyfinancial support, is another way we are helping to ensure access to family practice services in our HealthcareCommunity.◆ Reducing Physician Visit Costs: We made family practice practitioner visits more affordable toour Healthcare Community. We reduced our office visit charges by an average of 30% and at the sametime continue to provide an upfront 25% discount to self-pay patients, which improves access to familypractice care.◆ Employer Clinics Coming: We are preparing to offer employer clinics in our Healthcare Communityas another tool to lower healthcare costs and improve timely access to family practice practitioners. Byworking closely together with employers, we can help design an approach that will work to help reducehealthcare expenditures and improve health status for employees of our local employers.USING FAMILY PRACTICE OFFICES COSTS EVERYONE LESSIt is no secret that getting health services in a family practice setting is more cost effective than optingfor urgent care facilities or the emergency room. Patients can generally see this difference in the variationof co-pays for a practitioner’s office compared to the co-pay for a visit to an urgent care facility or theemergency room.Employers who provide the insurance to the employee realize savings when their employees utilizethe medical care available in our family practice offices to address health concerns. It is a Win-Win foreveryone involved.MGH FOCUS ON COST-EFFECTIVE CAREWe want to be your first choice for healthcare services and we also want our Healthcare Communityliving healthy lives and addressing health concerns before a need for an inpatient hospital stay occurs. We are committed to our mission to focus on the health and wellness of our Healthcare Community. However, please remember our primary goal at MGH is to encourage our community friends, neighborsand family members to make health a priority. MGH urges you to live a healthy life by creating arelationship with an MGH family practice practitioner who can help you navigate the journey towardsimproved health and wellness.8Vim & Vigor · FALL 2012CONTINUED ON PAGE 49

Volunteer ServiceSTransitionsA message from MGH Auxiliary president Ron TottenCALLJoin Our TeamCall MGH Volunteer Services at765-660-6410 to learn how youcan volunteer at MGH.Ron TottenMy name is Ron Totten, and I amproud to be your newly elected MGHAuxiliary president. I have big shoesto fill. Phil Weck, your past Auxiliarypresident, served two very successful terms. I wouldlike to thank him and the entire board for all theirhard work and dedication. In May, at the annual MGH Auxiliary meeting andluncheon, we elected our 2012–13 officers: Karen Key,vice president/president-elect; Kathy Gray, recordingsecretary; Dorinda Turner, assisting recording secretary;Norma Northway, treasurer; and Susie Jones, assistant treasurer. We also thanked Mary Craw and Jane Scholarfor their service as they completed their respectiveterms on the board. We welcomed Karen Koontz andMildred Shannon as new board members. I look forwardto working with Karen, Mildred and the entireboard to build on the successes of the previous boardin regard to fundraising and donations.Because of their hard work, and excellence in fundraising, they were able to donate 22 wheelchairs tothe hospital—wheelchairs that will be used daily toease the burden and pain of those who are sufferingand unable to walk because of illness or injury. The work we do as volunteers and as Auxiliaryboard members has a huge impact on MGH, ourHealthcare Community and our patients. We mustnever forget that.Of course, without you, none of this would be possible. We appreciate your support of our fundraisersthroughout the year and the many purchases youmake in our gift shop. Your generosity allows us todo what we do best: help others. On behalf of the entire board and each and everyvolunteer, thank you!Volunteers of the MonthMarch: Phil Burton—“Volunteering helps me get out and focus on other people,” says Phil Burton, whotravels all over the hospital working as a messenger. When not volunteering, Burtoncan be found sitting in front of his television watching Indiana University basketball and pro football.April: Lois Lutes—Prior to volunteering, MGH gift shop volunteer Lois Lutes and her husband owned andoperated a bed and breakfast in Grant County. Lutes has a sense of humor: She listed her family as two children, two stepchildren, three grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, two sons-in-law, two daughters-in-lawand “only one husband.” Her hobbies are crocheting and knitting.May: Velma Lovelady—Velma Lovelady volunteers at MGH because her son, Bryan (ambulance), anddaughter, Tressa Kilgore (laboratory), work at MGH and encouraged her to volunteer three years ago. She canbe found in the MGH gift shop. When asked what she likes about volunteering, she says, “meeting people.”She has lived in Marion since 1956 and retired as the manager of Greentree West Apartments after 29 years.June: Roy McVey—Roy McVey has a calling for helping others, and he truly enjoys it. He began volunteeringas a chaplain assistant after his pastor encouraged him.
