The Sprinter – always the consummate professionalNo one knows more about your job than you do – which is why we offer you a wholerange of choices where the Sprinter pickup is concerned. With three wheelbases, two cab variants and six different platform variants, it is the ideal vehicle for virtuallyany transport task. Several engines, designed to meet a variety of needs, and thebroad range of special equipment make for a whole variety of configuration options.

And because this is the Sprinter we’re talking about, it goes without saying that allthis practical talent comes with an attractive exterior too: whether you opt for a pickupor chassis, dynamic contours, balanced proportions and the typical Mercedes face arealways part of the standard package. Welcome a professional partner you can rely on:the Sprinter.

Whatever you have planned – the Sprinter takes it in its strideThe multifaceted Sprinter pickup is designed to cope with the diverse range of tasksyou face on a daily basis. Its driving and manoeuvring abilities are also remarkable: the vehicle’shandling, clear layout and agility make driving a joy, whether on the road or on theconstruction site. The Sprinter pickup is available with apermissible gross vehicle weight of 3.0 to5.0 tonnes. And payload capacities of upto 2770 kg allow you to make optimum useof the various platform designs – particularlythe largest variant with its generousload area of 8.7 m².▸▸▸▸▸▸▸▸▸3 wheelbases, 6 platform lengths, standard cab or crewcab4 basic weight variants: 3.0 t, 3.5 t,4.6 t and 5.0 tPayload from 840 to 2770 kgLoad area with standard cab from 5.8 to8.7 m², with crewcab from 4.3 to 6.9 m²Spacious interior with a wide range ofequipment and appointments to choosefromNumerous stowage facilities in the caboffer plenty of handy storage space(e.g. compartment above the windscreenas standard)Several cup holders and 2 bottle holders(1.5-litre bottles)Extensive safety equipment, including ADAPTIVE ESP ®5 CDI diesel engines with outputs rangingfrom 65 to 135 kW (88 to 184 hp),with diesel particulate filter as standard▸▸▸▸Petrol engine developing 115 kW (156 hp)Sprinter NGT with bivalent natural-gasdrive, rated output 115 kW (156 hp)Consumption-reducing ECO-Start automaticengine starter* for 4-cylinder CDIdiesel engines with manual transmissionavailable as an optionComfortable workplace, easy handlingand tremendous ease of loading*Not in conjunction with V6 CDI engine, petrol engine, automatic transmission and Start-Off Assist6 Sprinter pickup

Open to everything you need to make your job easierYou can’t reinvent the pickup – but you can keep on improving it. For example byadapting the platform width to practical requirements: the Sprinter’s load area is notonly wide enough to hold two Europallets side by side but will even take twoindustrial pallets. These and many other intelligent details make the Sprinter a companionyou can rely on in any situation. The Sprinter’s robust load area, designedwith standard pallet dimensions in mind, offers plenty of space for materials andtools. The platform can be accessed fromthree sides by folding down the sideboards and tailboard. Because the sideboards fold down fully and the load sillis low, loading requires significantly lesseffort.▸▸▸▸▸Platform features fully corrosionprotectedaluminium side boards andtailboardWooden platform floor reinforced withmetal rails at sidesLoad-securing rings as standard;tensioning straps available as an optionNon-slip, non-sensitive, robust plywoodfloor with textured surfaceSide board/tailboard height 400 mm▸▸▸Platform widths of between 2.03 and2.13 m allow 2 Europallets or even2 industrial pallets to be transportedside by sidePlatform length with standard cabfrom 2.85 to 4.30 m; with crewcab from2.12 to 3.60 mFolding step on inside of platformtailboard▸ Low loading height and practical equipment featuresmake loading and unloading quick and straightforward8Sprinter pickup

GlossaryADAPTIVE ESP ®Electronic Stability ProgramADAPTIVE ESP ® is an innovative dynamichandling control system, which for thefirst time also takes the vehicle load intoaccount. It actively intervenes in certainhazardous driving situations, e.g. if thereis an imminent risk of skidding, by apply -ing a braking force to one or more wheelsand adjusting the engine output as re -quired so as to help the driver deal with thehazardous situation. As well as aidingdirectional stability, ADAPTIVE ESP ® combinesthe functions of the anti-lock brakingsystem (ABS), acceleration skid control(ASR), electronic brake force distribution(EBD), Brake Assist (BAS) and the optionalStart-off Assist system.Caution:ADAPTIVE ESP ® can only act withinthe laws of physics. It is therefore impossiblefor ADAPTIVE ESP ® to preventskidding resulting from aquaplaning, for example. If the driver exceedsthe physical limits, even ADAPTIVE ESP ®will not be able to prevent an accident!Anti-lock braking system (ABS)The anti-lock braking system (ABS) preventsthe wheels from locking during braking.Speed sensors continuously monitor thespeed of each wheel. If a wheel is on thepoint of locking up, the brake pressure atthat wheel is reduced. When the dangerof locking has been averted, the pressureis then increased again. ABS helps thedriver to maintain control of the vehicle’ssteering, even during emergency braking. When ABS is in operation, the driver feelsa slight pulsing in the brake pedal.Acceleration skid control (ASR)At the first signs of wheel spin, that is tosay if the rotational speed of one of thedrive wheels suddenly increases, ASR intervenesin the engine management to reduceengine power and also in the brakingsystem to prevent wheel spin. ASR ensuressmooth start-off and acceleration, withoutwheel spin or sideways drift. The result isimproved traction – and safety – particularlyon split-friction or slippery surfaces.Brake Assist (BAS)In tests carried out in the driving simulator, our research engineers establishedthat drivers do not apply the brakes vigorouslyenough during emergency braking. This finding led them to develop the BrakeAssist system. From the speed at whichthe brake pedal is depressed, Brake Assistis able to detect a situation where emergencybraking is required. In such a situationthe system automatically increasesbraking power, aided by the anti-lock brakingsystem (ABS) which prevents the wheelsfrom locking up.38Glossary

Electronic brake force distribution (EBD)Electronic brake force distribution (EBD)proportions the braking force between thefront and rear wheels as required, inorder to optimise braking efficiency in alldriving situations. In this way the systemprevents “overbraking” of the rear wheels, which could cause the tail to start sliding. At the same time EBD puts less stress on thefront brakes, which reduces the risk offading due to overheating.Start-off AssistIn vehicles with manual transmission,Start-off Assist makes it easier to move offon uphill or downhill slopes. Once thebrake pedal has been released, the brakepressure is maintained for approximatelytwo seconds, thus allowing the driverto move his or her foot to the acceleratorpedal without having to worry about thevehicle rolling backwards or forwards. The brake pressure is immediately reducedas soon as Start-off Assist detects thatthe driver wishes to move off.Automatic tyre pressure monitoringThe automatic tyre pressure monitoringsystem can help to prevent tyre failurewhich might have serious consequences. It works by measuring the pressure andtemperature at the valves of the four tyresin baseline condition and under changingconditions. Aerials in the wheel arches pickup radio signals carrying the data andrelay them to the control unit. The systemis able to provide automatic notification of asignificant loss of tyre pressure so thatthe driver can take the appropriate action.Driver and co-driver airbagsAdditional components of the passive safetysystem include a front airbag for thedriver and another for the co-driver seat(or a twin airbag for the twin co-driver seat). They provide enhanced protection for thebelted front occupants in a serious frontalcollision and act together with the seatbelts and belt tensioners as a supplementaryrestraint system.Caution:Front airbags in no way diminish theneed for occupants to fasten their seatbelts correctly before every journeyas an airbag can only operate fully effectivelyif seat belts are worn correctly.Windowbags and thorax bagsThe Sprinter can be equipped with windowbagsand thorax bags to complement thedriver and co-driver airbags. In a severe sideimpact, the windowbag serves to increasethe degree of pro tection available for thehead of the occupant on the impact side. Itdeploys in the area of the side windows.Housed in the outside bolsters of the seatback rests, thorax bags are designed toprovide increased protection for the thoraxof the seat occupant.Bi-xenon headlamps with Add-LightSystem and cornering light functionConventional headlamps fail to provideideal illumination of the area to the sideimmediately ahead of a vehicle. This isparticularly true on tight bends, at junctionsand when manoeuvring. In situations likethese, the illumination from the low-beamheadlamps is complemented by an additionallight source, the Add-Light Systemwith the cornering light function. TheAdd-Light System operates when corneringat speeds up to 70 km/h, while the corneringlight function is activated when thedirection indicator is operated at speeds upto 40 km/h. Activation of these systemsis linked to the steering angle.39

Glossary“Sound 50 APS” and COMAND APSnavigation systemsBoth systems combine functions such asthe radio, CD player, telephone withaddress book and navigation into a single, compact unit with a clearly organisedcolour display. Both navigation systemscan be operated from the multifunctionsteering wheel. The relevant informationappears on the device display itself andalso in the central display unit in the instrumentcluster, where it can be easilyread by the driver.Super-single tyresThe use of super-single tyres on the rearwheels of the Sprinter with a permissibleGVW of 4.6 t represents an innovation inthe van sector. These tyres offer a numberof advantages over twin tyres: the loadingwidth between the wheel arches of thepanel van increases to 1228 mm with theresult that Europallets can be also beloaded at right angles to the direction oftravel. In the case of the chassis version, enhanced bodies can be fitted.CDI diesel engines (EURO4/EU4)The Sprinter range features diesel engineswith the latest generation of CDI technology. All critical exhaust emissions complywith the EURO4 limits (for vehiclesregistered as trucks) or the EU4/III limits(for vehicles registered as passenger cars).After-treatment of exhaust gases is handledby oxidation catalytic converters and dieselparticulate filters.Diesel particulate filterThe new particulate filter for diesel enginesfrom Mercedes-Benz removes over 95 percent of the soot particles from diesel exhaustemissions. This puts them well below theEU4 limit and places them on a par withpetrol engines. A continuous regenerationprocess prevents the filter from becomingclogged and thus dispenses with the needfor fuel additives.ECO-Start automatic engine starterWhen the engine is running and the systemis activated by the driver, under certainconditions the system shuts off the enginewhen the vehicle is stationary for morethan three seconds without the driver engaginga gear or using the clutch pedal. If the clutch pedal is depressed or the vehi -cle moves, the engine is automaticallyrestarted.All-wheel driveThe all-wheel-drive system transfers theengine power to the front and rear axles ona 35 : 65 basis. There are no mechanicallocking differentials, as it uses the 4ETSElectronic Traction System. This automaticallyapplies brake pressure to individual, spinning wheels, while simultaneouslyincreasing the torque to wheels with adequatetraction. This results in improvedtraction and better handling stability inmany situations: on ice, snow or wet leaves,on poor roads, in the wet or when towinga trailer.40Glossary

Load restraintA number of dynamic forces are generatedwhen a vehicle and load are in transit. Thesecan lead to uncontrolled shifting, slipping, tipping or rolling of unsecured cargo – withthe result that the risk of an accident isincreased. With their standard load restraintfeatures as well as numerous optionalsystems and a comprehensive range ofaccessories, Mercedes-Benz vans helpoperators to secure loads expertly andprofessionally. Features offered by theSprinter pickup include standard-fit loadsecuringrings in the load floor.▸ The most common way of securing a load on theback of a pickup is by tying it down to the floor. This increases friction between load and floor, preventingslippage▸ To secure the load, the lashings are stretched overthe cargo, secured to anchorage points in the loadfloor and tautened using a tensioner (e.g. a ratchet)Three-point seat belts on the rear benchin the crewcabThree-point seat belts are key componentsof the vehicle safety system. They providean exceptionally high level of occupantrestraint. In the Sprinter with crewcab, allthe rear bench seats, as well as the driverand front-passenger seats, are equipped withthree-point seat belts.Caution:Never drive without putting on yourseat belt!41
