Electronic brake force distribution (EBD)Electronic brake force distribution (EBD)proportions the braking force between thefront and rear wheels as required, inorder to optimise braking efficiency in alldriving situations. In this way the systemprevents “overbraking” of the rear wheels, which could cause the tail to start sliding. At the same time EBD puts less stress on thefront brakes, which reduces the risk offading due to overheating.Start-off AssistIn vehicles with manual transmission,Start-off Assist makes it easier to move offon uphill or downhill slopes. Once thebrake pedal has been released, the brakepressure is maintained for approximatelytwo seconds, thus allowing the driverto move his or her foot to the acceleratorpedal without having to worry about thevehicle rolling backwards or forwards. The brake pressure is immediately reducedas soon as Start-off Assist detects thatthe driver wishes to move off.Automatic tyre pressure monitoringThe automatic tyre pressure monitoringsystem can help to prevent tyre failurewhich might have serious consequences. It works by measuring the pressure andtemperature at the valves of the four tyresin baseline condition and under changingconditions. Aerials in the wheel arches pickup radio signals carrying the data andrelay them to the control unit. The systemis able to provide automatic notification of asignificant loss of tyre pressure so thatthe driver can take the appropriate action.Driver and co-driver airbagsAdditional components of the passive safetysystem include a front airbag for thedriver and another for the co-driver seat(or a twin airbag for the twin co-driver seat). They provide enhanced protection for thebelted front occupants in a serious frontalcollision and act together with the seatbelts and belt tensioners as a supplementaryrestraint system.Caution:Front airbags in no way diminish theneed for occupants to fasten their seatbelts correctly before every journeyas an airbag can only operate fully effectivelyif seat belts are worn correctly.Windowbags and thorax bagsThe <strong>Sprinter</strong> can be equipped with windowbagsand thorax bags to complement thedriver and co-driver airbags. In a severe sideimpact, the windowbag serves to increasethe degree of pro tection available for thehead of the occupant on the impact side. Itdeploys in the area of the side windows.Housed in the outside bolsters of the seatback rests, thorax bags are designed toprovide increased protection for the thoraxof the seat occupant.Bi-xenon headlamps with Add-LightSystem and cornering light functionConventional headlamps fail to provideideal illumination of the area to the sideimmediately ahead of a vehicle. This isparticularly true on tight bends, at junctionsand when manoeuvring. In situations likethese, the illumination from the low-beamheadlamps is complemented by an additionallight source, the Add-Light Systemwith the cornering light function. TheAdd-Light System operates when corneringat speeds up to 70 km/h, while the corneringlight function is activated when thedirection indicator is operated at speeds upto 40 km/h. Activation of these systemsis linked to the steering angle.39
