w2 THE MARTLET TUESDAY, 2, 1968the MartletA Comment:The Heinous Sea Hair--by Thelma Schmucklebuck of The CarletonA human being harming another human, an animal, oreven another’s property, is almost invariably severelypunished by the law for his infraction. He is punished by a law which is intended to provideprotection for all members of society; a law before which.all such members are intended to be equal. But the extent of this equality is quite another matter. On June 25, the B.C. health minister vetoed a GreaterVictoria proposal which would have allowed the city todeposit its raw sewage on the ocean floor. As he did so, heproclaimed the dangers of polluting the world’s watersupply. We agree that pollution must not be allowed but wonderif it is fair to penalize a small city such as Victoria-andlet there be no doubt, this a a penalty for the alternativeto the vetoed plan will be exteremely costly-when the mis-:- demeanors of others are not only accepted, but consideredto be perfectly natural. We protest the fact that others have been allowed in thepast, and are still being freely allowed to pollute the ocean. These beings are expected to continue in their evil ways andofficials become worried if they stop their heinous activities. We are, of course, referring to the actions of thatloathsome, unforgiveable creature - the sea hair. This marine animal has not only been polluting andpoisoning the oceans for centuries, but has been discolouringthem in the process.Whenever threatened in the slightest, this creature, without giving the least consideration to the other beingssharing the planet, emits a purple cloud of poison to protecthimself.Such a callous disregard for the welfare of the earth’sgreatest reservoirs must no longer be tolerated.Mr. Trudeau was elected on his promise of creating ajust society. That approach-thecharging into crowds, thebeating-up of bystanders, theindiscriminate assault onp r i v a t e and governmentproperty - is only effectivewhen used by the government. In any case I am mor-like to congratulate you onputting out four pages withoutwriting a word except aletter to the editor. And Ithink some very nice andhelpful people must haveworked with you.Sincerely,The Editor. The Editor Sir:On my last visitto the. .kids had tear gas cannisters. The use of tear gas and maceto dispel attacking policeis a well-known left-wingtactic.However, in this case Ihad been informed that thetear gas had been used bythe police - and the hopewas that a counter-demonstrationwould cool the presentsituation and prevent thepolice from having to takeaction. So I became sym-pathetic to the counterdemonstration.I assumed itwas to be again the presenceof the police on campus. Butno. It was to be against thepresence of students oncampus. I asked if the adminstrationhad asked theable to students in thelibrary will be even less thanthe inadequate amount oflast year. Therefore someoneshould ask the administra-tion what they plan to doabout the providing studyareas on campus for September. It also seems from theway that books are graduallypushing students out of thelibrary that it is bound to beas inadequate as an informa-off campus when only onepercent of its industrialplant went to makingnapalm.I wondered what would bea good percentage ? If DowChemical used two percentof five percent of its in-dustrial plant to make napalm, would that be reasonenough to keep it off campus? Twenty-five percent?Fifty percent? .Or should wewait until Dow starts makinggas ovens? One percentnapalm, one percent gasovens. Only two percent ofDow’s industrial plant contributedto genocide. Besides, what percentage of theworld’s population did gasovens kill? Not much. Anyhow, all wars kill people.I carefully considered allthis information and decidedthat it was incumbent uponme to take a stand. So I havesuggested that the most effectiveway to handle futuredemonstrations is to ask theJustice Department to invokethe anti-riot provisionof the Civil Rights bill-thatprovision which makesfederal crime to cross statelines with intent to inciteriot and violence. I suggestedthey arrest thecal Corporation.eit aDow Chemi-(Being the text of an addressdven at San Jose State College,11 March, 1968).EDITORtion centre as it is now as astudy area. While I understand thatlibrary expansion is expectedsometime in the future, I feelstudents should be informedas to the time of such anexpansion and that thisshould be a top priority ofthe Board of Governors.“Let’s have some action.”11111111111111111111 lthe MartetEditorBob MitchellEditor this issueSue WayaeGuest editoriaL Diane JanowslriReporters .--DcrykThompson,Ellen ScottPhotos .-____.-.___._Robin ClarkeCartoonsBob GriffithLayout __ Sue Mayselllllllllllllullllllllllllllllllllllulllllllllllllillullllllll!llllllllllllllllilllll
