5ManufactureAs a result of requests from local schools acouple of years ago, we started making heavydutybenches and tables for school playgroundsand outside areas - demonstrating to thenext generation that it is possible to designand make useful items from so-called wastematerial. Since then our commissions fromprivate individuals, community organisations, local authorities and major companies haveincluded shelving units, planters, arches andpergolas, fencing, gates and doors, tables,bird-houses and many other items which wehave made to our own designs or to those ofour customers.VolunteersOver the past four years, TRiM has providedplaces for 37 registered placements andvolunteers, each working varying amounts oftime, according to their circumstances. Weare always ready to work with new volunteersand provide training where necessary in allaspects of timber collection, the recognition ofre-usable wood and how to make it into usefuland interesting items. Although we often gohome tired, it is always with the feeling that wehave done something useful for the people ofManchester and the environment as a whole.NickTRIMUnit 7, Chatsworth MillWilliams Road, GortonM18 7AH0161 223 4400info@timberrecycling.orgwww.timberrecycling.orgDownload the latest issue at www.communityindex.co.uk

6Juicy June in the GardenEveryone loves a summer garden; go onadmit it, the smell of cut grass makes yousmile. Well, if you’re still in denial, I knowwho is happy, those garden pests. Yep it’s thattime of year when they are out in force andwhy not? Everything’s looking so juicy.June is a good month for plants, I say leavework on time once in a while (I’m trying tostart a revolution here) and catch the last fewhours of sunshine in your garden, yard, balconyor whatever space you have.“It’s all in the name of positive mental healthand wellbeing making me a happier worker”, Itell my boss. Well OK, I am the boss, but youmight have guessed, gardens make me happy.I try to work in mine as much as possible;whether shuffling paper, sending emails orsetting up my design board on the grass. I stillneed to take breaks however, this is my time tostretch the legs and survey my land.OK it is only a 30 second stroll round the grassand a quick look at the plants, but as greenis the most balanced colour in the spectrum Ifeel very calm when I get back to the drawingboard. If you have managed to get into your spaceand are listening to the rustle of tree leavesor maybe finishing off a day’s work, you couldthrow in a few quick pest patrols.I know pests play a good part in a garden’secosystem and you’ll never get them all, butremoving a few here and there to ensure youenjoy the juicy garden too can only be a win-win situation.Don’t forget indoor plants too. If you keep basilor mint on the kitchen window ledge, keep acheck for aphids on the underside of leaves. This tactic applies to a lot of plants as thoseaphids get everywhere. Try growing marigoldsas these attract ladybirds, who like aphids alot. Also encouraging blue tits (insect eatingbirds) can reduce aphids, so set up a few birdboxes.Later on in the evening, look out for the littlegrey slugs, as these are the little blightersthat do the most damage to those Lupins andHostas. If you’re buying new plants look carefully underthe leaves for any pest. Make sure they’re notpot bound with lots of roots coming throughat the bottom and check that the leaves lookhealthy. If you’re feeling inspired here’s a nifty websitewith lots more advice:www.gardenadvice.co.uk.Are you feeling summery yet?Paula Revill0161 881 9855paula@gardens123.co.ukwww.gardens123.co.ukDownload the latest issue at www.communityindex.co.uk

All agesand creative abilities are welcome. The Lonely Arts Club was set up by two formerWhalley Range residents, Sophie and Jenny, who met eight years ago while studying InteriorDesign at Manchester Metropolitan University.“We have always been attracted to the greenerparts of Manchester and have found ManchesterCity Centre to be distinctly lacking in green, open space. This was a big motivation in settingup The Lonely Arts Club. Also, we have friendsthat work in the creative industries yet still feelcreatively unfulfilled so, we set up The LonelyArts Club to combine socializing, country airand getting creative into one event”.On the day, there will be a local artist on handto give their personal input and offer adviceto those who are interested. Also, anyonewho would like to join in with a communal artproject can contribute to a piece of art whichwill be left in the given destination for futurewalkers to stumble upon. 20Beginner’s Guide to the Chorlton Players“Not so much a drama group, more a wayof life”. The tagline that accompanies theChorlton Players is by far and away a grossunderstatement. To me, this amateur dramaticgroup means (in no particular order) friends, laughter, late night gin and tonics, karaokeand curry. And all this before anyone evenremembers to open up a script. The best thing about the CPs is the utter lackof pretentiousness that surrounds it. There areno drama queens, wanna-be starlets or broodymoody types. There is an unreserved air of,‘acting is fun, so let it be fun and, gosh darnit, let’s have a pint while we’re at it!’ They’re araggedy band of mechanicals, youngest being19 and the oldest - well it’d be indiscreet of meto say, but it’s a fine old mixture of age, gender, sexuality, profession and background. Witharound 30 active members and counting, themore is definitely the merrier! But now for the details: the CPs have beenperforming since 1969 and put on around4 productions a year in the parish hall of StWerburgh’s Church. Comedies tend to rulesupreme, with past productions including theworks of Alan Ayckbourn, Noël Coward andWoody Allen. A panto and a sketch show arealso annual occurrences - rehearsals for thisyear’s Hot Pot sketch show are currently inmotion (Hot Pot is so called because we dish outfree food at the interval, although this year we’vediverted our culinary skills into chilli. Apologisesin advance). The CPs aren’t for actors alone (thank heckfor that), budding set builders, technicians, decorators, and general odd-bodies are allwelcome. So if you fancy joining up, come alongto one of our meetings. They’re held everyMonday and Wednesday, from 8pm, in theSpread Eagle pub on Wilbraham Road. To findout more go to our website, where you can alsosend us an email.Liz WalmsleyMembership is £26 a year.www.chorltonplayers.comDownload the latest issue at www.communityindex.co.uk
