Singer sewing machine, I’m 

really pleased that Ministry 

of Craft are offering courses 

in both basic sewing skills 

and sewing with patterns. 

There’s a wide range of other

photography to lampshade 

making.

If you’ve ever wanted to finally get to grips 

with your sewing machine, make the most 

of your digital camera or try your hand at 

something completely different like felt 

making or screen printing then Ministry of 

Craft is for you. 

Offering short, friendly craft 

courses in central and south 

Manchester, it’s the perfect 

place to be inspired! 

All the tutors are passionate 

local professionals who are 

experts in their field and class 

sizes are no more than ten 

people ensuring you plenty of 

time with your tutor, as well 

as the chance to meet new 

people and share ideas. All 

the necessary equipment to 

get you started is provided 

and the library of books 

and specialist magazines 

will get your creative juices 

flowing. In addition crafters 

get discounts at local craft 

retailers and suppliers. 

The idea for Ministry of Craft 

came to owner Sam Sterken, 

when she returned from 

travelling 3 years ago and 

wanted to do a short handbag 

making course. On discovering 

most courses involved 

anything from 3 months to 

a year’s commitment and 

were also quite formal – she 

decided to take matters into 

her own hands! 

The Autumn programme is 

booking now and has twice 

as many courses on offer, 

after the huge success of the

Spring programme. Highlights 

include courses in mosaic 

making, dressmaking with 

patterns, creative jewellery, 

crocheting, knitting, and 

lampshade making. 

Ministry of Craft have also 

joined forces with Fred 

Aldous Art, Craft and Design 

Materials in the Northern 

Quarter where courses will 

be held in their bespoke 

classrooms. 

Becky Hay from Blossom in 

Chorlton has also come on 

board and will be running two 

flower arranging courses - one 

focused on how to make 

stylish and contemporary 

hand-tied arrangements and 

the other a seasonal affair 

that will teach you the skills 

to make a ‘take home’ festive 

wreath and table decoration. 

If you’re unsure about your 

crafty skills there are lots of 

one-off courses where you can 

just try something out and 

see if it’s for you. Creative 

Cross-Stitch is a chance to 

learn the basics of cross-stitch 

in a one hour session that’s 

great for young and old. Learn 

to knit promises you’ll come

Armitage 

In his second 

volume of 

autobiographical 

work Simon 

Armitage explores how 

music has shaped his life and 

particularly his career as a 

poet and frustrated rock star. 

Part history, part 

autobiography with some 

poetry and songs, this book 

is full of amusing anecdotes, 

funny stories (mostly at 

Armitage’s expense), 

witty jokes and reviews of 

memorable gigs he’s attended 

from The Wedding Present at 

the Holmfirth Picturedome to 

a cancelled Oasis gig and even 

Jose Carreras at Huddersfield 

Stadium! 

You’ll love this if you’ve read

The bomb claims the life of 

her fiancée Konrad and leaves

down Konrad’s estranged

Elizabeth. 

Sometimes a little contrived. 

Hiroko seems at the centre, 

or very near to several major 

events in history, culminating 

with the post 9/11 raids into 

Afghanistan. However the 

book is so beautifully written 

and readable that all this can 

be forgiven. This book will 

keep you enthralled from its 

amazingly powerful opening 

chapter right to its shocking 

and heartbreaking conclusion.

film noir-esque novel as Evie

Manchester Then and Now 

– Jonathan Schofield 

This is a 

fantastic 

visual 

guide to 

Manchester, 

past and 

present. 

The book 

features historic photographs 

of Manchester, paired with 

specially commissioned 

contemporary views taken 

from the same vantage point 

or as near as possible in 

the modern city. One of the 

most striking sets of pictures 

are those of the 1996 IRA 

bombing. It really brings 

home the damage caused 

and the amazing fact that 

nobody was killed. The huge 

redevelopment of the old 

Salford docks is shown in 

great detail. Chorlton Green 

and Didsbury high street are 

also featured. 

This is a fascinating glimpse 

into some long forgotten 

corners of Manchester. At 

£12.99 it’s also great value 

and would make an excellent 

present.

3 is the Magic Number! 

When JP & Brimelow opened its first office in Didsbury eleven 

years ago the intention was always to create a triangle of 

networked offices covering D1dsbury, Chorl2on and Withingt3n.

Climate change, the recession, it’s easy to get quite down hearted but it’s 

not all doom and gloom. Our politicians should be doing more and we need 

to be telling them so, but we can’t just sit around and wait, we need to take 

control ourselves. Energy is one area where we can do just that. 

The cheapest and easiest way 

to make a difference is to 

stop wasting the energy we 

buy. For example, we heat 

our homes, businesses and 

community buildings but much 

of it escapes through windows 

and walls and we still have 

to pay for it! The best place 

to go for advice and lots 

of free incentives is www.

Next we can start thinking 

about where we get our 

energy from and that’s where 

renewable energy comes in. 

It’s about harnessing free 

or low cost and low impact 

energy from the sun, wind, 

wood, water, ground and 

air, to provide hot water 

and heat for buildings, 

and electricity to power 

equipment and machinery. 

There are many technologies 

available in all shapes and 

sizes, including solar thermal

benefits. For one, you don’t 

pay for sunlight or air, and 

may even be able to sell the 

power or heat you generate 

but don’t need. Emissions 

of carbon are reduced and

resilient to hikes in energy 

prices, which will only get 

bigger as we reach and go 

beyond ‘peak oil’ (see box). 

The cost of installing 

renewable energy can be a 

sticking point but doesn’t 

have to be a show stopper. 

Once you’ve done what you 

can to limit energy use, 

renewable technologies can 

be designed to match what is 

needed. There is support and 

funding available too, such as:

What is the Alexander 

Technique good for? 


is effective for overcoming 

muscular pain, tension and 

stiffness, such as back, neck 

and joint pain, poor posture, 

for helping breathing and 

vocal problems, and dealing 

with anxiety and stress. 

There’s evidence of the 

Technique helping various 

medical conditions, for 

example The British Medical 

Journal recently published 

research that clearly 

demonstrated long-term 

success of the Alexander 

Technique in addressing 

chronic back pain. After one 

year, individuals receiving 

usual GP care had 21 days of 

back pain per month whilst 

! 

those who undertook 24 

Alexander lessons had only 3 

days of pain. 

The Technique can be used 

to improve performance 

and prevent injury in your 

everyday activities including 

walking and cycling, and in 

playing a musical instrument, 

in singing, drama and sports. 

It can help with your speaking 

and presentational skills, 

and support pregnancy and 

childbirth. It’s been taught 

in music and drama schools 

internationally for many 

years, but is lesser known in 

other educational institutions. 

What is the Alexander 

Technique ? 


teaches practical skills so you 

can improve how you move, 

perform, look and feel. It’s a 

self-help method for dealing 

with habit and changing habit. 

It helps you learn to react 

more appropriately and allows 

you to get rid of unnecessary 

tension in everything you do 

in daily life. The Technique 

works with the dynamics of 

the neuro-muscular skeletal 

system so you can choose 

better balance and poise 

in your life. 

The Technique was 

developed in the 1890s 

by F.M. Alexander, an 

Australian actor, to 

solve problems he

voice and breathing whilst 

on stage. His reputation with 

the medical profession and 

the public grew, as did the 

recognition of the general 

usefulness of his Technique. 

He moved to the UK, built 

up a flourishing practice, 

and trained others in his 

Technique. 

How can I learn about the 

Alexander Technique? 

The Alexander Technique is 

usually taught in one-to-one 

sessions with a registered 

teacher. The teacher uses 

words and images as well as 

hands-on guided movements 

to pass on a different 

understanding and experience 

in how you use yourself. 

There are also introductory 

workshops available, and 

some ten-week 

basic 

courses 

that

give an opportunity for group 

learning. Group learning 

means you can provide help 

and support for each other, 

but it also means there is 

little time for the hands-on 

guidance that communicates 

the experience of the 

Alexander Technique.

what is on at the moment. 

Individual lessons can be 

booked at a mutually agreed 

time. Individual lessons vary 

between £30 to £45 a session, 

group workshops and courses 

cost less.

largest professional society.
