June, fromCrosl<strong>and</strong> Moor, has worked the last 20years on the intensive care unit at HRI.Colleagues in the domesticdepartment organised a party on July10 – her actual 60th birthday – <strong>and</strong>there were celebrations on ICU the dayafter, her last day at work.June, who has a son <strong>and</strong> daughter, twostep daughters <strong>and</strong> two step sons, <strong>and</strong>“umpteen million” gr<strong>and</strong>children, said:“The job has changed over the years <strong>and</strong>has become much more in-depth. I haveenjoyed being part of the team.”Sister Tina MacNab, said: “June is anintegral part of the ICU team helping usto maintain the high st<strong>and</strong>ards we haveon the unit. Themoney will be spent on a day out atFlamingo L<strong>and</strong> theme park for heryoung children <strong>and</strong> a donation willgo to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.There is also an ongoing fund tobuy a memorial bench for <strong>Calderdale</strong>Royal Hospital <strong>and</strong> contributions canstill be made.Donna’s close friend staff nurseKelly Lane, said: “Everyone hasbeen devastated yet we have been sosupportive of each other. Colleagueshave worked extra shifts to coverfor staff who have been very badlyaffected. I would like to thankeveryone from all departments fortheir support <strong>and</strong> their donations.”Donna, who worked on themedical assessment unit at CRH,died earlier this month <strong>and</strong> leaves ahusb<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> three young children.

Thest<strong>and</strong>ard of football has improved year onyear, which meant Matty was a lot busier.“We played as a team withsquad rotation, it was a doublecelebration winning the event <strong>and</strong>Matty collecting the man of thetournament award. Obviously <strong>next</strong>year we will be looking to defend ourcrown <strong>and</strong> achieving the treble”.Fourteen teams from a range ofhealthcare departments took partin the event organised by the <strong>Trust</strong>’sOccupational Health team. <strong>Calderdale</strong>Unison supported the event <strong>and</strong>provided the team trophies <strong>and</strong> medalsOrganiser Ros Johnston, said:“Exercise is part of the whole healthagenda <strong>and</strong> we are trying to promotehealthy living amongst the <strong>Trust</strong> staff.”She came up with the idea fora <strong>Trust</strong> tournament to promotemen’s health two years ago duringthe World Cup <strong>and</strong> it has gonefrom strength to strength.Health Informatics runners upOrganisor Ros Johnson, centreTeam PhysioMedical recordsTania King gave an update on theimprovement work being done inmedical records. The tremendousamount of work that had been put inby the team was acknowledged <strong>and</strong>the way they had taken on board thechanges needed was congratulated. Itwas agreed that benefits were alreadybeing seen within departments but itwas difficult to quantify the effects ofthe changes. The work is by no meanscomplete <strong>and</strong> will continue for sometime to come.Performance reportDirector of service developmentLesley Hill reported on the <strong>Trust</strong>’sperformance for June 2008:n For the existing national targetsour performance in 10 out of 11 wasstrong. Working is taking place toimprove our performance on cancelledoperations which was rated amber.n For the 13 new national targetsperformance was strong, includingaccess to genito-urinary medicine,MRSA bacteraemias, Clostridiumdifficile cases, the 18 weeks target <strong>and</strong>diagnostic waiting times targetn For the <strong>Trust</strong> targets (localtargets that are not required for theAnnual Health Check) performanceagainst five of the six was strong<strong>and</strong> performance against one -emergency readmissions for fracturedneck of femur - was amber.Finance reportFinance director Mark Brearleyoutlined the financial position to theend of June 2008. He said there wasa favourable variance of £49k fromthe budgeted (<strong>and</strong> planned) income<strong>and</strong> expenditure position at the endof June 2008; CRES schemes havedelivered £1.7m of savings in thefinancial year which is at plannedlevels; the <strong>Trust</strong> has a cash balance of£19.9m against a planned position of£16.1m; <strong>and</strong> the financial risk ratingto the end of June 2008 is 4, which isat the planned level.Infection controlDirector of infection prevention <strong>and</strong>control David Birkenhead said therehad been no MRSA bacteraemias inJune <strong>and</strong> the current total for 2008/09was five against an annual target of 19cases. The total cases of Clostridiumdifficile for June was 15. The revisedprovisional target for 2008/09 is 188(post 48-hour cases) for the <strong>Trust</strong>.Developments in cancer careDirector of operations MarkPartington presented a report onthe developments in cancer services<strong>and</strong> how the changes would impacton the services of the <strong>Trust</strong>. Thereare two main changes - additionalcancer st<strong>and</strong>ards to be achieved fromDecember 2008 onwards <strong>and</strong> changesto peer review arrangements.Action plans are to be implementedto ensure compliance with the newcancer waiting time st<strong>and</strong>ards:n Divisions to ensure that thesechanges are communicatedthroughout their clinical teams <strong>and</strong>ensure specific pathway reviews <strong>and</strong>capacity implications are considered byeach multi-disciplinary team (MDT)n THIS to ensure that informaticssolutions are available to support themeasurement <strong>and</strong> reporting of thenew st<strong>and</strong>ardsn Divisions <strong>and</strong> the CancerModernisation Board ensure that MDTscommence self-assessment reviews inline with the new cancer peer reviewproposals.The work will be co-ordinatedthrough the Cancer ModernisationBoard.Data qualityDirector of health informatics JohnRayner presented the first monthlyData Quality report.
