Greater Carlyle USBC Bowling AssociationFall 2007 NewsletterWWW.GREATERCARLYLE.COMI would like to invite everyone to check out the newGreater Carlyle USBC Bowling Association(GCBA) Web Site. There is a wide variety ofinformation at the site. For example, you will beable to view current and past averages, honorscores, and newsletters. You will also be able todownload tournament entry blanks, and much more.I would like to take this time to send out a specialthank you to Lola DeGroff and Jason Henslerfor all of the work they did making the GCBAWeb Site a reality. Jason took the initiative todesign and construct the site. Jason bowls atGrantfork Bowl and Hi Top Bowl. Lola is awonderful family friend who is instrumental inentering all of the data on the Web Site.THANKS LOLA AND JASON. THE WEBSITE IS AMAZING!!!Here we go again with another bowling season. Bynow most of you have been bowling for quite a fewweeks, others are just getting back in the swing ofthings. I hope everyone has a spectacular season. If you haven’t already received your sanction card,it should be coming real soon. Remember, yoursanction card will be sent directly to you in the mailfrom the United States Bowling Congress (USBC).AVERAGE NOT ON SANCTION CARDWhen you receive your 2007-08 USBC SanctionCard you will notice that your 2006-07 average isnot printed on the card. The USBC is not able toprint your highest average on your card. In manycases the listed average was not necessarily theappropriate average for tournaments. Averages canbe viewed and printed by checking your records onwww.bowl.com using the “Find a Member” feature. In addition to average records, the “Find a Member”feature also includes awards information andmembership history. The average data onbowl.com is more completed and accurate. Itshould show all of your averages and the number ofgames bowled in each of the leagues you bowl. However, if you believe the information is notcorrect, contact your league secretary to have itcorrected. If you do not have access to bowl.com,the 2006-07 GCBA Average Books are in thebowling centers. Please make sure your average iscorrect.BOWLING IS A SPORTThe following is a special message from the USBCPresident, Jeff Boje. USBC’s vision is to grow thesport of bowling, but what does that mean. Itdoesn’t mean we want to make all of our members200 average bowlers or make everyone a SportBowling member. We want more people to engagein bowling – and to view bowling – as a competitiveactivity. It’s a disturbing reality that 22 percent ofthe American population considers bowling to be asport while the rest view it as “entertainment.”USBC wants people to go to the bowling centernot merely to have lunch, chat with friends and tossa ball down the lane, but to participate in bowlinglike they would soccer, softball or any other sport.Bowling must not allow itself to be perceived as arainy-day alternative to the movies. Our futuredepends on parents and kids viewing bowling as analternative to Little League baseball or soccer.Bowling as entertainment is a good, thrivingbusiness for proprietors. It helps them maintain theirfacilities, pays for renovations and improvementsand makes a center more attractive to all customers. It’s a great way to introduce people to bowling. Butbowling for entertainment is not the function of theUSBC.Our need is to focus on getting people to engagein bowling as a competition. If you bowl becauseyou value the outcome of the game, competeagainst the other team with a desire to win, carewhether the rules are followed and thespecifications that define the sport are uniform, thenyou value bowling as a sport.1

USBC’s mission also remains the same. We willcontinue to serve the leagues and associations thatare the engine that drives USBC. We understandit’s our role to service those entities and to be therefor them so they can support us. Our mission hasnot changed one bit.USBC CHANGES AWARDSPROGRAMKeeping in line with its vision to grow the sport ofbowling, USBC believes there’s a differencebetween recognizing an accomplishment andrewarding an achievement. It’s a shift in focusUSBC applied to its youth awards program morethan a year ago, and it’s now being applied toUSBC’s adult members in selected awardscategories.Starting August 1, USBC members who rollgames at least 100 pins over their averages willreceive emblems in recognition of theaccomplishment while those who bowl 298 and 299games will earn 11 strikes-in-a-row plaques. Those who roll a 298 or 299 games and wantanother form of recognition (such as a ring) will beable to purchase them through USBC. The CenturyWatch for bowling 100 pins over your average willno longer be available. USBC also is consideringadditional purchasable options for 298 or 299bowlers.This change is the first step in the transition froma reward-based philosophy to one of appropriaterecognition. According to former USBC ChiefExecutive Officer Roger Dalkin, “for too long theorganization and its predecessors rewardedachievements rather than recognizing theaccomplishment.”USBC also is discontinuing league high game andhigh average pins because most leagues alreadyoffer their own high game/high series awards.GCBA HIGH AVERAGE AND SERIESCongratulations to Chris Federer for having thehighest average in the GCBA during the 2006-07season, and Derrick Beard for bowling the highestseries in the GCBA during the 2006-07 season.Chris averaged 229 in the Friday Night MensLeague at Poplar Junction Lanes.
