MaryJane Driscoll, Lindbergh’s new alumni relations/fund development specialist hasvolunteered to serve as newsletter editor, at least for the near future. Along with a neweditor comes a new look to our publication, a different format, a few pictures, and evena little color. It will be bulk mailed from school instead of first class from my house, and some copies will be sent electronically, saving considerable postage. I will continuecollecting news articles, verifying names and class years and occasionally writing anarticle before passing the material on to Mary Jane. The most difficult part of publishing a newsletter is having enough news topublish. Please help make our job easier by sending in news clippings regarding alumniengagements, weddings, obituaries, promotions, military service, election to office, orwriting a paragraph or two on what you’ve been doing since graduation. Or, just tell uswhat you like or dislike about our newsletter. You may send articles in by U.S. Mail or,preferably, e-mail by using the contact form on the Web site.(Cont. A Touch of Class • Winter 2008Continued from page 1Over the 20 years the LHSAAhas been in existence we have had threenewsletter editors: Joan (Langenbach-'62) Robinson, Amy (Meyer '92)Robinson (no relation to Joan), and me,the first not named Robinson. During myterm I’ve had considerable assistancefrom numerous high school journalismstudents and at least four journalismteachers, primarily and most recently, EdDonnelly and Megan Troup. I greatlyappreciate their assistance, advice andfriendship.I’ve been active with theorganization since the very first meetingon Jan. 27, 1988. I spend an average ofone to two hours every day on alumnibusiness, some days considerably more, plus at least one-day-a-week on campus.Publishing the first two alumnidirectories in 1999 and 2004 requiredmany, many eight-hour days. Later thisyear I intend to start on a 2009 edition. On the plus side is thecamaraderie I have shared withhundreds-- no, thousands-- of our 26,000alumni. I answer every phone call fromalums that call the school and arereferred to me for information onmembership, reunions, alumni orteachers. I also respond to every e-mailsent to our Web site. It has been mypleasure to chat with so many LHS gradsand teachers over the years. This summer my 1958classmates and I will celebrate our 50-year reunion. It’s hard to believe it’sbeen 54 years since we first enteredthose halls as scared little freshmen, justthree months after the first class of 50seniors had graduated. Since then ourchildren, Susan (Ashwell '87) Schrautand Scott Ashwell '90 and daughter-inlawTracey (Davis '91) Ashwell havegraduated from LHS and we presentlyhave several grandchildren in Lindberghschools. A Touch of Class • Winter 2008Lindbergh’s Perfect Annual Performance ReportLindbergh School District again earns excellent marks for achievement, as indicated in the Nov. 1 release of AnnualPerformance Reports (APR) by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The APRis issued by DESE for each school district in the state. The report measures progress on meeting six academic standardsrepresented by 14 specific performance indicators. The 14 “mets” awarded to Lindbergh by DESE mean a “100%” for thedistrict on its Annual Performance Report.“The perfect score can be attributed to two things: students are really working hard and taking learning seriously, andteachers are really working hard,” stated Chuck Triplett, Director of Curriculum and Student Programs. The 2007 APR shows that Lindbergh School District exceeded the criteria for all applicable indicators.Nancy Rathjen, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, said, “In the past five years we have made tremendousstrides in meeting the mandates of No Child Left Behind. Each year the district has invested in more support forstudents and teachers in order to increase student achievement. Students and teachers have made the best use of that supportto continue taking achievement to the next level. Our scores have moved steadily up over this five year period.”With changes to MAP testing and an increase in APR indicators, DESE created two forms of Distinction in Performanceawards for which districts may qualify: Distinction in Performance for High Achievement and Distinction in Performancefor Improvement. The perfect APR score led to Lindbergh being recognized for the Distinction in Performance for HighAchievement award.Lindbergh’s Outstanding Board of EducationThe Lindbergh School DistrictBoard of Education was recentlyrecognized as one of sixstate finalists for the “OutstandingBoard of Education Award” bythe Missouri School Boards’ Association(MSBA).
