PerspectivesNewsArts newsLecturer wins internationalpoetry competitionEnglish pr<strong>of</strong>essor Antony Rowland hastriumphed in a major poetry competition,which attracted over 1,500 entries, tosnatch a £10,000 prize.Antony’s portfolio <strong>of</strong> four poems won theManchester Poetry Competition – a biennialevent sponsored by Poet Laureate CarolAnn Duffy and organised by ManchesterMetropolitan <strong>University</strong> for an internationalaudience. Judges Ian Duhig, Frances Levistonand Adam O’Riordan selected a shortlist <strong>of</strong> sixpoets from the 1,500 entrants beforeannouncing Antony as the final winner at a galaevent in Manchester on Friday 19 October.Announcing the winner, chair <strong>of</strong> judgesAdam O’Riordan said: “In the end, the selection<strong>of</strong> the winner felt very clear and natural andunanimous. We admired the dynamic intensemusicality <strong>of</strong> the winning poems, the poet’sevident relish for the vocabulary they wereemploying, how well the tone was controlled,and the ease with which the poems movedbetween the contemporary and the historical.”Fashion students’ designshit the high streetTwo graduates from the School <strong>of</strong> Art &Design will see their fashion designs andphotography in clothing stores nationwideafter scooping both first prizes in aprestigious fashion industry competition.Natalie O’Hare, who graduated with a BA (Hons)in Fashion Design, won the design award <strong>of</strong> thefourth Warehouse Design Competition, whileBA (Hons) Fashion Image Making and Stylinggraduate Rachel Hannaway was chosen aswinner <strong>of</strong> the photography category. Organisedby clothing label Warehouse and the BritishFashion Council (BFC), the competition was opento students from the 34 institutions across the UKwhich are members <strong>of</strong> the BFC’s Colleges Council,who were invited to submit their graduation yearportfolios.A judging panel, including representatives fromWarehouse, the BFC and Grazia magazine,chose the winners for their impressive designability and creativity, and Natalie and Racheljoined Warehouse for a six-month paid designplacement.
