Pocono Mountains Chamber of Commerce IMPACT January 2007 Pocono Mountains Chamber of Commerce IMPACT January 2007
From the Chairman of the Board January 2007
Calendar of Events
Being involved with this Chamber can truly
be a life changing event. At least for me, it
is. Being the 2007 Chairman of the Board
is definitely a professional and personal
highlight for me. I have been very lucky to
work with some of the best community
leaders, all of which have been strong supporters
of this Chamber.
I would like to start by thanking Bob Hay and Bob Phillips for leading us
through a record breaking year in 2006. The increase in membership,
programs, and business-related activities was tremendous. Of course
Bob was supported by the most awesome staff in the world - Pat, Peter,
Miriam, Amber, and Georgia. On top of that, our executive committee
and chamber board, offer so much time and input that allows us to be
the "unified voice" that we are.
Our goals for 2007 are many. This chamber continues to take the lead
in the political arena. Not by being political, but by informing our members
of issues and bills that will directly impact them. This is not always
easy. Remembering that we have many sole owners and many large
businesses with thousands of employees our chamber has worked hard
to find the balance in representing everyone. This will continue to be a
main focus for us.
We will also continue to investigate ways to give back to our
members.Everyone has heard, probably more times that we can count;
you get out what you put into it. Meaning, of course, to get business out
of the chamber you need to be involved, attend meetings, and of course,
participate in events. And that is true. But, as a Chamber, that does not
mean our job is done. We are continuing to find ways for everyone to get
more "bang for their buck." One of the ways we can do this is to establish
Affinity Programs. This is not a quick process, but done properly,
everyone will benefit.
The other goal for 2007 is to give more space to our members and our
committees. With that being said, you won't see many articles from me.
What you will see is updates on committees - what's going on, when do
they meet and how can you help. Members - keep those press releases
coming. It's a great way to tell everyone what you are doing and what
you are about.
I'm looking forward to a great year and I thank everyone for their
involvement with the Pocono Mountains Chamber of Commerce.
The Quality of Life Committee’s
Annual Children's Christmas Party
The Pocono Mountains Chamber of Commerce Quality of Life Committee held
their Annual Children's Christmas Party on December 4, 2006 at the Salvation
Army for more than 90 underprivileged children. Although this party has been
an annual tradition for many years, Dr. Kimberly Filipkowski, Chair of the
Quality of Life Committee, admitted that prospects for this year's party seemed
bleak when the local Kentucky Fried Chicken, which usually provides the food,
closed for renovations. Fortunately, Leadership Pocono's Class of 2007 stepped
up to the plate.
Tom and Melissa Boyd of Metz Associates donated and prepared a complete
holiday dinner for the children and their guardians. Chris and Michele Paige
of Paige Capital Management agreed to buy toys for the children, and Chris,
who volunteered to be Santa, collected each child's wish list in person.
On Saturday, December 16th, volunteers from Leadership Pocono will help
Santa spread holiday cheer by distributing the toys to the Salvation Army
Citadel in East Stroudsburg. Each child will receive the toys they requested
from Santa during their visit with him on December 4th. Fellow class members
Lisa Hutchins, Christine Langlois, Eric Longenbach, Deborah Stewart,
and Tami Moffett helped locate, purchase, transport, wrap, and distribute the
gifts.
The Quality of Life Committee also held a Children's Shopping Spree in
November. Approximately 24 children from the Salvation Army were given
certificates to shop at Odd-Lot Outlet in Marshalls Creek, followed by a
trip to Dairy Queen for ice cream.
Holiday Mixer
The December Holiday Mixer was held at Geisinger Medical Group in
Mt. Pocono. It was fantastic to see so many Geisinger Physicians in
attendance. Along with the great hors d'oeuvres, everyone had the
opportunity to tour the facility and take home a token of Geisinger's
appreciation for attending.
Pocono Mountains Chamber of Commerce IMPACT January 2007
From the President Members in the News
As we begin a new year, the Pocono
Mountains Chamber of Commerce
Government Affairs Committee will be
focusing on key legislative priorities for
the membership. Three of these legislative
priorities are rapidly raising healthcare
costs, overly burdensome business
tax structure, and school property tax
reform.
The Chamber realizes that health care costs continue to rise at
unprecedented levels. Business owners need to be able to offer
affordable health care coverage for their employees and their families.
We will examine programs that could be beneficial in stabilizing
health care costs to both employers and employees. The second
priority is to reform our tax structure within the Commonwealth.
Pennsylvania's corporate tax laws are uncompetitive when compared
to other states. In order to stimulate economic development
and growth, we need to reform and reduce the taxes and regulations
that burden our businesses. The third priority is the school property
tax reform for Monroe County. There has been substantial debate
on how this can be implemented in our county and the Chamber
will take a positive role to adopt a fair and equitable method that
will help to reduce school property taxes for businesses and individuals.
There are other issues that the Chamber will undertake such as
environmental laws, infrastructure systems, economic development
programs, and workforce development. Our commitment is
to work with our elected officials to solve the issues that affect our
members and our community.
Pocono Medical Center has re-opened their remodeled and expanded
cafeteria with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The reason for the
redesign of the space and menu was to offer more healthy choices for
their staff, visitors, and patients. The renovations include an enlarged
salad bar and a floor plan that allows an easier flow through the serving
area. "In order to efficiently serve our patients, visitors, and staff, we
needed to change the layout of our cafeteria," says Richard J. Henley,
President and CEO of Pocono Medical Center. "This new configuration
will allow for more choices and a better flow through the serving
process."
Pocono Medical Center (PMC) is pleased to announce the opening of
its new surgery center. All surgery patients can now enter PMC and be
admitted through the surgery center entrance, located in the Jordan
Pavilion. The space once occupied by the Mattioli Emergency Center
has been renovated to include a new reception area and same-day surgery
facilities. "This is another important step for Pocono Medical
Center as we transition from a community hospital to a regional medical
center," says Richard J. Henley, President and CEO of Pocono
Medical Center. The 11 new, state-of-the-art suites, including eight general
rooms, two cardiac rooms, and a cystoscopy room, are part of the
$53 million new wing expansion that has opened in phases this year.
Each suite features state-of-the-art imaging and monitoring equipment
and the design of the rooms, with equipment mounted from the ceilings,
incorporates the latest innovations in hospital design. The surgery
