Levels Course Content
Tots If skater needs assistance, is unable to get across ice alone or falls often this level is
recommended. Helmets are also recommended. Skaters should have some skating
experience, it is recommended that skaters attend some open skating before enrolling in
a class. Instruction includes getting up from a fall, marching in place, forward skating and
beginning stops. There will not be one on one instruction. You DO NOT need to get all
three badges to move out of Tots. If skater gets across the ice alone with ease they can
proceed to Basic 1 & 2.
Basic 1 & 2 If the skater can make it across the rink comfortably by themselves, without falling, they
are ready for Basic 1 & 2. Skaters will learn skating and gliding forward, stopping, two-foot
hops and bubbles, as well as an introduction to backward skating and gliding. Helmets are
recommended.
Basic 3 & 4 Skaters will learn forward skating using blades rather than marching and be introduced to
edges, crossovers & three turns.
Basic 5 & 6 Skaters will learn backward edges, backward crossovers, hockey stop and
one-foot spins, as well as t-stops, spirals, lunges and bunny hops.
Hockey
Skills
Novice
Patch
Skaters must complete Basic 3 before entering hockey skills
and must register at their hockey level.
Designed for skaters that are currently in hockey and have passed Basic 3, meaning that
skaters are able to skate backwards and turn from forward to backwards with ease.
Skaters must have the proper basics since instruction covers balance, edge work and many
advanced drills. This class is not for Tots or Basic 1 skaters who plan to play hockey in the
future. The class concentrates just on skating. It is recommended skaters wear helmets
and gloves. Hockey sticks are not used.
• Rookie - Hockey players in first grade or lower
• Mites - Hockey players in second grade and third grade.
• Squirts - Hockey players in fourth and fifth grade.
Novice Patch includes Basic 7 & 8, Dance and Freestyle levels.
spins. Once you begin the Freestyle and Dance badges, instruction will include several
new jumps, spins as well as dance steps.
