I’m sure that you will agree that
unexpected gifts are usually the most
exciting. So it was when St. Matthias
recently received a bequest from a former
parishioner, Kathleen Palmer
Morris. What makes this gift unusual
is that there are very few current
members of St. Matthias who remember
Kathleen Palmer Morris. It turns
out that she was a life-long member of
the parish who was active through the
early 80’s, even serving as the church’s
secretary for several years. Kathleen
gave of her time and talents despite
having been afflicted with cerebral
palsy, which increasingly disabled her

The Messenger
St. Matthias is a busy
place this fall and the
women’s groups are
right in the middle of the
activity. The “All
Women’s” board met
with the intention of
planning opportunities
for all of our church
women to socialize, ex-
perience God’s love in new ways, and to find ways to show
we care about each other.
Our fall breakfast will give us a chance to meet our
new parish women, have coffee and morning goodies, and
have fun with our resident clown. All St. Matthias women
are invited to get together in the Parlor on Saturday, November
5 at 9:00 am. Please join us. If you haven’t been
given an in-hand invitation check
the ECW bulletin board.
Our winter activity will be a
retreat to be held at DeKoven
Foundation in Racine for a
quiet time in February. Watch
for details.
Spring will bring another
gathering, which will also include
an election of board and officers
for a two-year term. Interested in
participation? We always look
for new people and ideas.

Kathleen Palmer Morris gift will give for years
until her death in 1999.
How wonderful it is, though, that
she thought to perpetuate her giving
by leaving $15,000 to St. Matthias in
her will. How is her gift perpetuated?
Undesignated bequests such as Kathleen’s
are divided evenly between our
Memorial Fund and Endowment
Fund, both of which are committed to
the long-term maintenance and development
of our parish resources. The
Endowment Fund is invested, and the
earnings from those investments are
distributed back to the parish when an
important need arises. So through the
coming years, Kathleen’s legacy will
grow and continue
to be a
blessing to St.
Matthias. Our
parish is fortunate
to have the
Memorial Fund
and the Endowment
Fund, and we are doubly blessed
by bequests. I hope that you will remember
Kathleen’s example when
preparing your will.

ECW Board Planning Women’s Events

“All Women” umbrella include Hilda’s Hope. They continued
to fill the request for Dolls 2 Love in October and
will make, gather, etc. greeting cards for the health ministries
committee to send as caring thoughts to our parish
members. If you have left over greeting cards in your desk
please forward them to Barb Heighway.
Our bridge groups are gathering for social evenings.
Our prayer shawl knitters are working to provide the incredibly
well received shawls for Kathy Mallory, parish
nurse. If you would like to be a knitter or need yarn please
call Marge Konetski. We are still knitting leper bandages
under the guidance of Mary Brod. Interested? Call her. Our
knives are still being sold as a fund-raiser by Sandy Pearson.
Be sure to look for them at upcoming events. They
have a “sharp” reputation! Our Crisis Meals plan is working
well. Kathy Mallory looks at our calendar – two names
are listed for each month, requests us to provide a family
meal and deliver it. It is a great
way to say “we are thinking of
you, hope things come along
well for you”.
