BBQ Cont... As the day progressed, the laughter and conversations moved downstairs to the bar, pool table, and theater room. There was a variety of car related movies to watch including a number that included Alfa Romeos. The whole event went really well and a big thanks goes out to all of those who attended, brought food, and especially to JVR and Peanut for sharing their home with all of us. JOHN!!! Yeah, I’m talking to you JVR! I just wanted to thank you for hosting the NWARC for a fun party/picnic. I know, Ron and I stayed too late but we had fun. And I’m sure everyone else did too. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing you at another event sometime. Does everyone know Sue and Derek Ware? I didn’t think so and that’s why I’m profiling these two in my president’s article. Some of you may have seen me wearing a t-shirt or polo with SICC on it. That stands for Spokane Italian Car Club and was formed by Sue and Derek in addition to Kelly Corbin (of Coresmith Automotive) Don Shelling, and Diane Mills back in 1998. I’ve been a member for twelve years or so and used to attend their events with Heidi and Dillon with Dillon attending in a baby carrier. Prior to 1998 there had been a few attempts at forming Italian car clubs in Spokane, including a Fiat club but they didn’t last. Look it up.) with the aid of Corsmith’s customer list for the invitees. SICC obtained enough interest to form the club that’s still going today with 35 members plus spouses/partners bringing the number up to about 70. Sue says the clubs secret to success has been a very informal culture and little organization. I’d add a low cost environment and a modest agenda to their recipe. Regarding the officers Sue says while they don’t have a president they do have a treasure. She called her leadership position “the moderator”, although I always figured she was the club muscle. Diane Mills was the first, ahem, moderator and still owns her 1957 1200cc Fiat Spider today. Sue took over in 2000 and only just recently handed over the reins to Lisa Harder (who will hand it over to Dan Fratini next year). The clubs meetings are pot luck social get-togethers usually at someone’s house or a park. Their season is from April through October with the last few years cumulating with a Halloween party. Come to think of it they have a Christmas party every year as well. In the past they’ve had two day drives with an overnight stop but didn’t manage one this year. For 2012 they went on scenic drives to Trezzie Farms in Green Bluff, Priest Lake where Kelly has a family cabin, and Joe Williams led a Leaf Peeping tour around Lake Coeur d’Alene this Fall. Bill Romine took them on a drive in the Palouse with lunch in Rosalia Washington. Just imagine all you NWARC members going on a drive in June with the sun shining and the temperature warm, I miss that. Cars? Obviously Italian but not specific to any marque. Sue and Derek were originally into British cars first as Derek was from the UK. So he had a red Austin Healy BN6 and a Rolls Royce. Later Sue acquired a Maserati Quatroporte and later the two followed with a Fiat Spider and a Fiat coupe (which Sue didn’t like). They were driving a 1976 Alfetta GT and a 1979 Alfa Spider when I was living over in Spokane and they’re still driving the Spider today. What do some of the members drive? Well Carter Smith has a Ferrari 308GTSi and an old Fiat 850 Coupe, Hubie & Doris Wendt have a Milano with a 3-speed auto transmission, Marti Stitsel has an original Fiat 500, Bill Romine has had a couple of Milano Verdes and plus a Guilia Spider racecar, Joe Williams has a Fiat 124 Spider in great shape, and lastly Jim and Kathy Sullivan with a beautiful SOVREN Alfa GTV racecar.
