The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club
Gathering alfisti for food, conversation, and
car movies isn’t all that tough, especially
when you get the word out that it will be at
John VanRensberg’s (JVR) beautiful home.
Such was the case on Saturday, October
13th. After a few months of dry weather, it
finally started raining just a day or so prior to
the event, but that didn’t seem to dampen the
attendance. Club members came from as far
as Olympia and Fox Island to join the festivities
at JVR’s house in Woodinville.
The parked cars in front of the house included
John’s two Milanos, plus a visiting Milano, a
couple Spiders, a 164, and a bunch of non
Alfas. JVR’s charming daughter (aka: Peanut)
welcomed us at the door. The BBQ started
with people talking about life, sitting on the
deck, trying different drinks and enjoying
snacks made by many of the guests. I wondered
if anyone would notice me eating about
a third of the tray of deviled eggs? Before
long, the BBQ was fired up and first off the
grill was some home made sausage that JVR
supplied. The sausage was wonderful and full
of great flavors… rumor has it his seasonings
included just a touch of Castrol GTX 20-50
since it helps the Alfa’s so well. Next on the
grill were hot dogs and burgers which went
perfectly with the buns, condiments, and appetites
in the house.
As the day progressed, the laughter and conversations moved downstairs to the
bar, pool table, and theater room. There was a variety of car related movies to
watch including a number that included Alfa Romeos.
The whole event went really well and a big thanks goes out to all of those who
attended, brought food, and especially to JVR and Peanut for sharing their home
with all of us.
JOHN!!! Yeah, I’m talking to you JVR! I just
wanted to thank you for hosting the NWARC
for a fun party/picnic. I know, Ron and I
stayed too late but we had fun. And I’m
sure everyone else did too. Thanks again
and I look forward to seeing you at another
event sometime.
Does everyone know Sue and Derek Ware?
I didn’t think so and that’s why I’m profiling
these two in my president’s article. Some of
you may have seen me wearing a t-shirt or
polo with SICC on it. That stands for Spokane
Italian Car Club and was formed by Sue
and Derek in addition to Kelly Corbin (of
Coresmith Automotive) Don Shelling, and
Diane Mills back in 1998. I’ve been a member
for twelve years or so and used to attend
their events with Heidi and Dillon with Dillon
attending in a baby carrier.
Prior to 1998 there had been a few attempts
at forming Italian car clubs in Spokane, including
a Fiat club but they didn’t last. Between
Sue, Derek, Diane, Kelly and Don,
President’s Column by Merril Gordon
they wanted to make another attempt to form a club so set up a recruiting
meeting at Manito Park (never heard of it? Look it up.) with the aid
of Corsmith’s customer list for the invitees.
SICC obtained enough interest to form the club that’s still going today
with 35 members plus spouses/partners bringing the number up to
about 70. Sue says the clubs secret to success has been a very informal
culture and little organization. I’d add a low cost environment and a
modest agenda to their recipe. Regarding the officers Sue says while
they don’t have a president they do have a treasure. She called her
leadership position “the moderator”, although I always figured she was
the club muscle. Diane Mills was the first, ahem, moderator and still
owns her 1957 1200cc Fiat Spider today. Sue took over in 2000 and
only just recently handed over the reins to Lisa Harder (who will hand it
over to Dan Fratini next year).
The clubs meetings are pot luck social get-togethers usually at someone’s
house or a park. Their season is from April through October with
the last few years cumulating with a Halloween party. Come to think of
it they have a Christmas party every year as well. In the past they’ve
had two day drives with an overnight stop but didn’t manage one this
year. For 2012 they went on scenic drives to Trezzie Farms in Green
Bluff, Priest Lake where Kelly has a family cabin, and Joe Williams led a
Leaf Peeping tour around Lake Coeur d’Alene this Fall. Bill Romine took
them on a drive in the Palouse with lunch in Rosalia Washington. Just
imagine all you NWARC members going on a drive in June with the sun
shining and the temperature warm, I miss that.
Cars? Obviously Italian but not specific to any marque. Sue and Derek
were originally into British cars first as Derek was from the UK. So he
had a red Austin Healy BN6 and a Rolls Royce. Later Sue acquired a
Maserati Quatroporte and later the two followed with a Fiat Spider and a
Fiat coupe (which Sue didn’t like). They were driving a 1976 Alfetta GT
and a 1979 Alfa Spider when I was living over in Spokane and
they’re still driving the Spider today.
What do some of the members drive? Well Carter Smith has a
Ferrari 308GTSi and an old Fiat 850 Coupe, Hubie & Doris
Wendt have a Milano with a 3-speed auto transmission, Marti
Stitsel has an original Fiat 500, Bill Romine has had a couple of
Milano Verdes and plus a Guilia Spider racecar, Joe Williams
has a Fiat 124 Spider in great shape, and lastly Jim and Kathy
Sullivan with a beautiful SOVREN Alfa GTV racecar.
All my best to Sue, Derek, and the Spokane Italian Car Club!
Alfa News
Hailing a taxi in Mexico isn’t very easy, especially if it is an
Alfa Romeo taxi being driven by Martin Lauber or our club
member Mark Colbert who teamed for the 2012 La Carrera
Panamericana. Keeping this car racing each day was
a talented crew that included Tom Nuxoll from VRM. They
had their challenges and handled them all well, as can be
expected. At one point, with only 4 kilometers to go to the
finish, the car blew an oil line and caught fire… but also
caught about 60 feet of grass along the road on fire as well.
Sorry, there’s no video of Mark in his race suit stomping out the burning grasslands. Tom
was able to help get the car repairs done quickly. Off they went and were able to still finish
3rd in class overall for a podium photo, small trophy, and bragging rites after the 2000
mile race across Mexico. http://martinstaxi.com/
Though not an Alfa guy, the world lost a true car racer, the
likes of which are rarely seen. On the morning of Oct 31st,
American John Cooper Fitch--the first SCCA national
champion and a star in European sports-car racing in the
1950s and '60s--died from Merkel carcinoma, a rare skin
cancer, at his home surrounded by family in Lime Rock,
Conn. He had numerous great racing achievements, among
them, he took 5th overall in the 1955 Mille Miglia at the
wheel of a stone-stock production 300 SL coupe, whose
suspension was so bad, “we had to stop and tie down the
axle with our belts.” Yet Fitch screamed into Brescia just
one hour and 22 minutes behind overall winner Sir Stirling Moss, who was piloting a full
racing version of the 300 SLR. The only cars between them were Fangio's 300 SLR, a Ferrari
and a Maserati--all dedicated race cars. Moss's navigator was journalist Denis Jenkinson,
who will always be remembered for the famous “scrolling map in a box” he used to
guide Moss through the treacherous course. But in fact it was Fitch who conceived and built
the device, and he always treasured the note of gratitude that “Jenks” sent him for providing
it. Also, that same year, Fitch was the Mercedes-Benz team driver waiting just behind
the pit wall before taking over from teammate Pierre Levegh. He never got that chance. A
crash involving Levegh's 300 SLR, Mike Hawthorn's D Jaguar and Lance Maklin's Austin
Healey resulted in the tragic crash that killed more than 80 people, and changed Fitch's life
forever. It was then that he realized something had to be done to improve racing and highway
safety, a challenge that became an overriding pursuit for the rest of his life, leading to,
among other innovations, the development of the ubiquitous yellow, sand-filled Fitch Inertia
Crash Barriers--the yellow crash barrels seen on racetracks and highways--that have
saved thousands of lives around the world.
I have bugged the great people at CMC-Models to
make a few Alfa Romeos miniatures and finally
they have; the 8c2900B Speciale Touring
Coupe from 1938. I am confident the quality on
this will be like their previous work on Mercedes,
Bugatti, Ferrari and others… absolutely stunning.
NWARC November 2012 newsletter page 5
We still aren’t sure if the production release of the Alfa
Romeo 4C will debut in January at Detroit, or if we have
to wait until March for the always amazing show in Geneva.
Sergio Marchionne, Fiat CEO, describes the Alfa 4C
as the perfect weapon to relaunch the brand to the U.S.
market. We are still awaiting the final specifications and
list price, but the good news is more and more of the test
cars are being spotted around Europe. Since the North
American Auto Show in Detroit is still over 10 weeks away,
I have faith they will get the cars ready in time. You go,
Fall Colors Drive WrapUp
Though the New England states get some incredible fall colors that cannot be beaten, our fall colors sometimes do a very
nice job, albeit with challenging timing. Some years, our leaves turn early while on other years they’re late. As summer
ends and the days get shorter and shorter, the trees "know"
that soon, there won’t be enough sunlight for photosynthesis.
They begin to shut down for the season and the green chlorophyll
disappears from the leaves. As this happens we begin to
see yellow and orange colors that have been in the leaves all
along, hidden by the green colors. If the transition to cool
nights happens quickly, some trees, like maples, trap the glucose
in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. This glucose
helps turn the leaves into a red or purple colors. The brown
color in oak leaves is made from wastes left in the leaves. The
combination of trees, chemistry, and weather creates our fall
foliage.
Our NW weather is anything but consistent so the best fall
colors often last just a few days so the trick is trying to plan
a NW Fall Colors Drive in advance and hitting the mark. The
Fiat Enthusiasts Northwest (FEN) did just that trick on Saturday,
October 13th. They had us all gather in Redmond at
Panera Bread, and when I say all, I mean Fiats, Citroen, MG,
and Alfa Romeo… a nice mix of cars to go with the nice mix
of fall colors.
Our route took us eastbound winding up over Union Hill towards
Ames Lake. Along the way the trees looked outstanding
and filled with color. We then travelled north past
Carnation Farms before heading to Stillwater and the back
roads like Kelly Road and Cherry Valley before stopping to
stretch legs in Duvall. Next, the wonderful line of cars headed
across the flat bottom of the Snoqualmie Valley to wander the
twisty roads to Snohomish and again, past lots of fall color.
We ended the drive in Snohomish visiting a number of antique
stores and a meal at a Mexican restaurant. It was a real treat
to spend time with these car folks and the wonderful variety of
cars.
The Maryhill hillclimb and car show
featured Alfa Romeo this year and
the publicity poster featuring Denny
Pillar’s SCCA champion Guilia spider
looked enticing, so Judy and I
thought it would be fun to go. The
road itself is pretty historic, built by
Sam Hill, and the first paved road in
the Northwest.
As an aside, Sam Hill is a person we
should thank. Not only did he give
us Maryhill Museum, Stonehenge, the
Blaine Peace Arch and Semiamoo,
but he was a champion of good
roads. He said, “Good roads are
more than my hobby; they are my
religion” and claimed to have spent
more on them from 1900-1912 than
the national government. He traveled
the world advocating for roads
and was instrumental in creating the
Columbia River Highway and the Pacific
Highway. He spent $100,000
from 1909 to 1912 in the Maryhill
area and the Maryhill loops were part
of a ten mile experiment demonstrating
seven types of pavement. The
loops were finished in 1913, and
until 1948 were the only way to get
to Goldendale from the Columbia
River. The engineer copied it when
he built the “Figure-eight” loops near
the Vista House on the Oregon side,
where part of the Half-fast Lap just
occurred.
Maryhill HillClimb WrapUp
Not an easy drive for the queasy, in
2.2 miles the Maryhill Loops course
climbs 850 feet with twenty-five
curves, including eight hairpins.
Sounds like a good race course,
doesn’t it? The Yakima Valley Sports Car Club held a hillclimb there from 1955 to 1963, and after many years of disintegration,
the road was rebuilt in 1998 and has been the site of a SOVREN hillclimb since 1999. It is owned by Maryhill Museum
and is now open to non-motorized traffic every day when it is not rented for an event, such as skateboard and go
cart races.
NWARC November 2012 newsletter page 10
The event itself was pretty
casual and fun to be around.
We went to the pits Saturday
morning expecting to
see a lot of Alfas, but there
were…six! Starke Shelby,
who has entered every one
of these hill climbs since
1999 and Jim Sullivan from
Spokane were the only ones
from NWAROC. Portland
had Frank Anderson, Mark
Carpenter and Denny Pillar.
There was a nice GTV there,
I think from Idaho. It was
fun to talk to Monte Shelton,
from whom I bought a TR3
on his used car lot in 1964.

He had entered a very nice Ginetta.
We left the pits in order to get to the Maryhill Museum car show in
time to see and hear the race cars arrive. They got to drive highway
97 from the other side of Stonehenge and were pretty awesome,
snarling and snapping down the hill, around the front of the museum
and onto the lawn. The Goldendale Motorsports Association has had
a car show there in conjunction with the hill climb, also every year
since 1999. It is very eclectic and this year there were 153 entrants,
hot rods, customs, restorations, SAABs, Minis, sports cars, etc., including…only
three (!) Alfas. The class winner was a red Graduate
with a black and yellow stripe all around it. The other entrants were
an Alfetta sedan with Cibie lights the size of dinner plates and a very
nice Super from Portland. We should have entered.
The hillclimb was on Sunday and continued to be a casual event.
You could go to the pits, pay $5 each to park in the Link farm hayfield,
watch the cars start, or catch a bus to one of the spectator
sites on the course. Instead, we chose to go back to Highway 97 to
a spectator area that had about 40 people watching a view of about
the top half of the course. Of the over forty cars entered, Starke
said thirty-four made runs, and I don’t think anyone went off. There
were some pretty hairy drivers, though.
As I said, a fun, casual event. Of course, there should have been
more Alfas there, and having it to do over, probably more of us
should have gone. Oh well, maybe someday we will be featured
again and will make a much better showing.
2012 Holiday Gala December 1st!
Registration is open for the 2012 NW Alfa Romeo Club Holiday Gala and Charity
Silent Auction. We return to the Harborside on Lake Union for our annual tradition
of celebrating and reflecting on yet another excellent year with NWARC. The
event will be held on December 1st. The Harborside is located in the AGC building
and looks directly onto Lake Union where we may be able to see boats lit up for
the holiday season.
The event will start at 5 p.m. with our annual auction! A portion of the auction
proceeds will be donated to charity. Rita Ingram is already working hard to
procure excellent donations to keep the bidding (and winning!) interesting. From
Books, to Jelly, to spare Alfa parts, homebaked goodies to Alfa art, you won't
want to miss your chance to bid, give, and take home some interesting, fun and
rare items. We've already received some generous donations, but we're still looking for more. Please contact Rita Ingram
at ritaingram@comcast.net or call 360 707 0154 if you have items or ideas you're willing to donate.
The discounted ticket price is $45 per person if you sign up by Nov 13. After that, the price goes up to $55
per person until the close of registration on Tues. Nov 27th. The price includes appetizers, salad, dessert, and your
choice of Grilled Mahi Mahi, Grilled NY Strip Steak or House Made Potato Gnocchi (vegetarian). There will be a no-host bar
during the auction and cocktail hour.
You probably already received an e-mail invitation to the event via Evite. It might have looked like spam, but we promise
it wasn’t! Register for the event using http://nwarc.motorsportreg.com/ or by mailing a check to the chapter treasurer,
Thomas Jermann. (Call 206 276 3484 for address) Please remember that an RSVP to the Evite does NOT ensure
you a plate at the event. You must register and pay to be assured a spot.
Please note that current Club Membership is Required to Register... Guests of members do not have to be a
club member.
As always, the Holiday Gala is a wonderful chance to gather with old & new friends to celebrate a year in the lives of Alfisti.
Please join us as we look back on a year of great events and activities, and we’ll look ahead toward 2013. Remember
to plan your bid strategy on the numerous auction items. (Note: Credit Cards are not accepted for auction items...
cash or check only.)
