NWARC Club Meeting Nov 20th!!! Board Members Thanks to the NW Auto Show, we have moved our club meeting over to Tuesday, November 20, at Park Place Ltd. in Bellevue. Our host, Shannon Low, always makes us very welcome, surrounded by American hot rods, rare foreign cars, Aston Martins, a few SAABs, some Lotus’ and a plethora of Porsches. Shannon has been very busy around the nation buying and selling at the big time auctions that most of us only see on TV. He can give us a taste of the cars and stories behind them. When: Tuesday, November 20th 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM Where: Park Place Ltd. 13710 NE 20th Street, Bellevue, WA 98005 The other key part of the night will be the club leadership elections. Though not as exciting as Shannon’s words, it is very important. Our club has an active event roster with wonderful gatherings, tours, and numerous track events. Our holiday party is an outstanding event… and all of this is possible thanks to good members and leadership. The leadership tasks are not overwhelming and each requires the talents we already have. If you can read this… you can help. The leaders we have, have done a great job but now it’s your turn. Our elections will be for: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer as well as openings for volunteers in the positions for Activities, Competition, Membership, Webmaster, and Newsletter Editor. Here are outlines of the elected roles so you’ll know what you are volunteering for, or may be nominated for. President: Manages the overall Board and presides over the club meetings. Writes a monthly column for the newsletter. Typically uses around 5 hours monthly… plus attendance at the club meetings. Contact Merril Gordon for specifics: Merril.r.gordon@boeing.com Vice President: Fills in for the club President if the President cannot attend a meeting. Arranges locations and speakers (if any) for monthly club meetings. Typically requires 2 or 3 hours effort per month. Contact Joe Faherty for specifics: joeveloce@netscape.net Secretary: Keeps notes during our club and board meetings and helps with club communications. Typically requires a couple hours effort monthly. Contact Gordy Hyde for specifics: gohyde@hotmail.com Treasurer: This role keeps our club finances in line. The key tasks are to track the money, pay the club bills. This requires good accounting skills and accuracy… and around 8 hours monthly. The Iniezione is the monthly newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club, a non-profit organization of Alfa Romeo enthusiasts. NWARC is a regional chapter of the national Alfa Romeo Owners Club (AROC). Chapter meetings are held the second Tuesday of most months except December. Membership dues are $63 per year, which includes subscriptions to either the digital and/or print versions of the Iniezione and the monthly national publication, Alfa Owner. For information about joining the club, contact the membership director listed in the right hand column. Alfa News Hailing a taxi in Mexico isn’t very easy, especially if it is an Alfa Romeo taxi being driven by Martin Lauber or our club member Mark Colbert who teamed for the 2012 La Carrera Panamericana. Keeping this car racing each day was a talented crew that included Tom Nuxoll from VRM. They had their challenges and handled them all well, as can be expected. At one point, with only 4 kilometers to go to the finish, the car blew an oil line and caught fire… but also caught about 60 feet of grass along the road on fire as well. Sorry, there’s no video of Mark in his race suit stomping out the burning grasslands. Tom was able to help get the car repairs done quickly. Off they went and were able to still finish 3rd in class overall for a podium photo, small trophy, and bragging rites after the 2000 mile race across Mexico. http://martinstaxi.com/ Though not an Alfa guy, the world lost a true car racer, the likes of which are rarely seen. On the morning of Oct 31st, American John Cooper Fitch--the first SCCA national champion and a star in European sports-car racing in the 1950s and '60s--died from Merkel carcinoma, a rare skin cancer, at his home surrounded by family in Lime Rock, Conn. He had numerous great racing achievements, among them, he took 5th overall in the 1955 Mille Miglia at the wheel of a stone-stock production 300 SL coupe, whose suspension was so bad, “we had to stop and tie down the axle with our belts.” Yet Fitch screamed into Brescia just one hour and 22 minutes behind overall winner Sir Stirling Moss, who was piloting a full racing version of the 300 SLR. The only cars between them were Fangio's 300 SLR, a Ferrari and a Maserati--all dedicated race cars. Moss's navigator was journalist Denis Jenkinson, who will always be remembered for the famous “scrolling map in a box” he used to guide Moss through the treacherous course. But in fact it was Fitch who conceived and built the device, and he always treasured the note of gratitude that “Jenks” sent him for providing it. Also, that same year, Fitch was the Mercedes-Benz team driver waiting just behind the pit wall before taking over from teammate Pierre Levegh. He never got that chance. A crash involving Levegh's 300 SLR, Mike Hawthorn's D Jaguar and Lance Maklin's Austin Healey resulted in the tragic crash that killed more than 80 people, and changed Fitch's life forever. It was then that he realized something had to be done to improve racing and highway safety, a challenge that became an overriding pursuit for the rest of his life, leading to, among other innovations, the development of the ubiquitous yellow, sand-filled Fitch Inertia Crash Barriers--the yellow crash barrels seen on racetracks and highways--that have saved thousands of lives around the world. http://www.autoweek.com/article/20121031/alms/121019873#ixzz2AuT2vU8S I have bugged the great people at CMC-Models to make a few Alfa Romeos miniatures and finally they have; the 8c2900B Speciale Touring Coupe from 1938. I am confident the quality on this will be like their previous work on Mercedes, Bugatti, Ferrari and others… absolutely stunning. http://www.cmc-modelcars.de/us/index.htm NWARC November 2012 newsletter page 5 We still aren’t sure if the production release of the Alfa Romeo 4C will debut in January at Detroit, or if we have to wait until March for the always amazing show in Geneva. Sergio Marchionne, Fiat CEO, describes the Alfa 4C as the perfect weapon to relaunch the brand to the U.S. market. We are still awaiting the final specifications and list price, but the good news is more and more of the test cars are being spotted around Europe. Since the North American Auto Show in Detroit is still over 10 weeks away, I have faith they will get the cars ready in time. You go, Sergio!
