letter from the Dean As I write my first letter as your new dean, I am in the midst of moving from Seattle to New York City. Anyone who has moved across town or across the country knows how stressful and exhilarating the process is. I only hope I can find all of my “must haves” when I open the boxes in my new apartment in Morningside Heights! My husband Rich is happy to be returning home after 30 years in Seattle and my golden retriever Simon is looking forward to playing in Riverside Park. For my part, I am so excited to begin a partnership with Columbia University School of Nursing, and the community of students, faculty, alumni, and friends that have built a legacy of exemplary education, research and practice. I bring enormous energy, joy, and determination to my role and my new city and its many diverse communities. What an adventure! I have reflected on the timing of this change for me personally and for the School of Nursing. I believe we are at the doorstep of a major transformation in the practice of nursing. Two sentinel events are aligning that will bring new challenges and opportunities to the way nursing is practiced, to the way we educate the next generation, and to the research our scholars pursue. While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (health reform) became law on March 23, 2010, many of the provisions in the law will become effective over the next eight years. The specifics of implementation are still being formulated. Nursing as a profession and nurses as practitioners, educators, leaders and scholars, have a high stake in how these specifics are crafted. I am particularly determined that nursing be involved in the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the establishment of the photo by Catherine Gibbons Fall 2010 • 1 National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council, and to the testing of models of care by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. These provisions and many others offer nurses an opportunity to influence policy that assures the full utilization of nurses at the top of their scope of practice and to the formulation of research that will lead to high quality, cost effective, and progressive care for individuals, families, communities and entire populations. I plan to make our involvement in the enactment of each of the many provisions in this law a high priority. The other sentinel event is the release of the Institute of Medicine’s report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” Early in October the recommendations will be released to the public and I anticipate a report that will challenge us to transform our practice, research, care environments, education and leadership. The School of Nursing will host an event on November 8 in partnership with Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork Presbyterian Hospital to jointly learn about the report’s findings and recommendations and to begin the dialogue about transformation. Our leadership will be essential and I know I can count on each of you to think collectively and creatively about our future. One other thought before I close: taking the reins of the treasure that is Columbia University School of Nursing is without a doubt an extraordinary opportunity. I am following in the footsteps of a visionary leader who saw nurses as exquisite practitioners and scholars and established a school that would develop this potential.
