On September 2, 1780, “Jannet Bryan (a single woman)” marriedJoseph Orton and Samuel Orton signed the marriage bond. In the 1776 will ofJames Orton, there was a Joseph Orton listed as the son of James Orton. JohnBryan witnessed the will. It is believed that this James Orton is the father ofJoseph Orton who married Jannet Bryan.It is believed that Joseph Orton is the son of James Orton (born 1725) and Jane(Bryan) Orton (born 1727). Joseph Orton’s brother, James Orton (born 1750),was the grandfather of William Reed Orton who married Rebecca Huey (1.8.6).William Reed Orton was born in 1802 and is the son of James Orton (born1773) and Elizabeth (Renshaw) Orton (born 1776). William is the grandson ofJames Orton (born 1750) and Elizabeth (Taylor) Orton (born 1754). JosephOrton’s sister, Rebecca Orton, married John Bryan, Jr. (1.3). Joseph Orton’sbrother, John Orton, married Jane Bryan (1.4).In 1797, “Jennet Ortan” was listed in her father’s will and “son-in-law JosephOrtan” was named executor. In 1800, Joseph Orton was listed in the census ofRowan County, North Carolina. On November 5, 1800, Letters ofAdministration were issued to “Joseph Orton and William Law.” “The will ofJoseph Orten was made while weak in body on January 26, 1807.” This willstates that his wife, Janet, should have “the house wherein I now dwell and landtwo hundred and 20 acres.” This will shows that Joseph and Jannet Orten werethe parents of the six children:. . . Joseph Campbell is appointed guardianof Jane, orphan of Joseph Orten and gave bond of 500 pounds with James Ortenand Francis Neely. On April 19, 1809, Jincey Robertson Orten married JohnWilson.
