Introduction<strong>Wood</strong> flake composite panels, such as oriented strandboard (OSB) or flakeboard,have gained more and more market share over plywood in the structural panel sector overthe past 20 years. In 2001, OSB accounted for 53% of structural panel consumption andis projected to remain above plywood consumption in the future [Howard 2001]. Thedecline of plywood production is primarily due to less availability of large diameterroundwood, which is essential for obtaining veneer for plywood production. On the otherhand, wood flake composite panels can utilize young growth trees with smaller diameter.With the diminishing of large diameter roundwood, there is a need to improve theefficiency of composite panels in order to meet the market’s demand and to fully utilizeyoung growth forest resources.In the past two decades, there has been a great deal of research to improve themechanical properties of flat flakeboard and OSB by optimizing the resin content, flakegeometry, flake alignment, additives, etc. It appears that the strength of flat compositepanels has been pushed to the limit of current technology. One option to improve thestrength of a panel would be to alter the shape of the panel into a more efficientgeometry. Higher stiffness and flexural strength can be obtained by molding theflakeboard into a corrugated shape perpendicular to the direction of primary bending(Figure 1). The idea of using a corrugated panel is not new; it is very common in theplastic and sheet metal industries. Nevertheless there is currently no commercialproduction of corrugated wood panels as decking materials for floor or roof systems.1
