Cow sat down at the lunch table.She opened her lunchbox,but it was empty! There wasn’ta sandwich, or an apple, or evenany juice.“Where is your lunch?” asked Pig.2


“I hid some nuts behind this tree,”said the squirrel. “Now I don’tknow what happened to them.”Cow looked in her lunchbox.“I don’t have any nuts,” said Cow.“But here is a sandwich.”“Thank you,” said the squirrel.4


Then Cow thought about the manshe saw sitting by the side ofthe road.Cow said, “Hello. Where areyou going?”“I was on my way to the market,”said the man. “But I have nothingto eat today. I cannot go on.”5


Cow looked in her lunchbox.“I have an idea,” said Cow.“Maybe if you eat this apple, youwill feel strong again.”“Thank you,” said the man. Hetook a big bite out of the apple,and he walked on down the road.6


Then Cow thought about theyellow bird she saw on thebranch of a tree. The bird wasalmost hidden by the leaves.The bird was not singing.Cow said, “Hello. Why aren’tyou singing?”7


“When I woke up this morning,my voice was gone,” said the bird.Cow looked in her lunchbox.“Drink some sweet juice,” saidCow. “It will help you sing.”“Thank you,” said the bird. Andthe bird sang a beautiful song.8


“Now I know what happenedto my lunch!” said Cow.“I gave my sandwich to thesquirrel without nuts.I gave my apple to the manwithout food.And I gave my juice to thebird who couldn’t sing.”9


“Then we will share our foodwith you,” said Sheep.And that day the three friendshad a great lunch!10
