Loch ShielLoch SeileWe come now to Loch Shiel. There is anunderstanding that the name comes from a veryold word meaning ‘river, flowing one’. Whether thisis correct or not, Loch Shiel is indeed very riverlike;it is narrow, bordered by high mountains, andflows quite rapidly. Whilst on the loch one could beforgiven for thinking one was on a large river. The name ‘Shiel’ is first on record in 732 ADin The Life of St Columba, a Latin text. The authormentions “other oak timbers were being towed byus from the mouth of the river Sale (Flumen sale)for the restoration of our monastery”. 1 In the worksof Alasdair MacMhaighstir Alasdair, the Jacobitebard of the ‘45 who was local to the area, the lochappears several times. In this poem called Fàilte naMòr-thir, he mentions how Loch Shiel was used forfishing:Abounding in nets, rods, tackle and troutIs grey-green Shiel of the river-trout. 2In another poem ‘the oak of Loch Shiel’ ismentioned, a reference to the oak trees which growon its banks. 3Today one might be forgiven for believing thearea has never been much populated, but prior tothe clearances in the 1840s there was much moreindustry and settlement than today.
