About the AuthorsAbout the AuthorsJohannes Britz holds two Doctoral degrees from the University of Pretoria, South <strong>Africa</strong>. He obta<strong>in</strong>edhis first Doctoral degree (Doctor Div<strong>in</strong>itatis) <strong>in</strong> Christian <strong>Ethics</strong> and the second (Doctor Philosophia) <strong>in</strong><strong>Information</strong> Science. He is currently serv<strong>in</strong>g as Provost/Vice Chancellor and Professor at theUniversity of Wiscons<strong>in</strong>-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, USA, and Professor Extraord<strong>in</strong>ary at the School of<strong>Information</strong> Technology at the University of Pretoria. He is also Research Fellow/Associate at theUniversity of Zululand and a visit<strong>in</strong>g scholar at the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands) where hehas lectured on <strong>Information</strong> <strong>Ethics</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce 1994. Dr Britz is co-editor of the International Review of<strong>Information</strong> <strong>Ethics</strong> (IRIE), Research Issues <strong>in</strong> <strong>Information</strong> Studies: Some <strong>Africa</strong>n Perspectives andserves on the editorial board of the Library and <strong>Information</strong> Science Research Journal of theUniversity of Bucharest. He is a member of the advisory board of the South <strong>Africa</strong> Journal of Libraryand <strong>Information</strong> Science, as well as Inkanyiso: Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences.britz@uwm.edu.Rafael Capurro has a PhD <strong>in</strong> Philosophy from Düsseldorf University, Germany (1978). He achievedhis Postdoctoral teach<strong>in</strong>g qualification (Habilitation) <strong>in</strong> Practical Philosophy (<strong>Ethics</strong>) from StuttgartUniversity, Germany (1989) and later became Professor (em.) of <strong>Information</strong> Science and <strong>Information</strong><strong>Ethics</strong> at the Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart and Lecturer <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ethics</strong> at the University of Stuttgart(1986-2009). Currently, he is Director of the International Center for <strong>Information</strong> <strong>Ethics</strong> (ICIE) (1999 topresent) and the Editor-<strong>in</strong>-Chief of the International Review of <strong>Information</strong> <strong>Ethics</strong> (IRIE) (2004 topresent). He is also a Dist<strong>in</strong>guished Researcher at both the <strong>Africa</strong>n Centre of Excellence for<strong>Information</strong> <strong>Ethics</strong> (ACEIE) at the <strong>Information</strong> Science Department, University of Pretoria, SA, and <strong>in</strong><strong>Information</strong> <strong>Ethics</strong>, School of <strong>Information</strong> Studies, University of Wiscons<strong>in</strong>-Milwaukee, USA. And aformer member of the European Group on <strong>Ethics</strong> <strong>in</strong> Science and New Technologies (EGE) of theEuropean Commission (2000-2010). http://www.capurro.de/home-eng.html.Dick Kawooya is an Assistant Professor at the School of Library and <strong>Information</strong> Science, Universityof South Carol<strong>in</strong>a, USA. His PhD <strong>in</strong> Communication and <strong>Information</strong> was completed <strong>in</strong> 2010 at theUniversity of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA. His Doctoral research (dissertation) explores Ugandantraditional musicians' construction of ownership. His broad research <strong>in</strong>terests focus on the impact andmanifestation of Intellectual Property Rights <strong>in</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>’s <strong>in</strong>formal sectors. He was the recipient of the2006-07 International Policy Fellowship of the Open Society Institute (OSI) and the Centre for PolicyStudies at the Central European University (CEU). The Fellowship research focused on the impact ofcopyright on access to e-resources <strong>in</strong> Uganda’s teach<strong>in</strong>g and research environments. Prof. Kawooyais also a member of the Commonwealth of Learn<strong>in</strong>g (COL) Copyright Expert Group. In 2005-2006, heserved as the National Copyright Expert to eIFL.IP, represent<strong>in</strong>g the Consortium of UgandanUniversity Libraries (CUUL). His most recent work <strong>in</strong>volves serv<strong>in</strong>g as the Lead Researcher of the<strong>Africa</strong>n Copyright and Access to Knowledge (ACA2K) project (www.aca2k.org).kawooya@mailbox.sc.edu.Stephen Mutula is a professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South <strong>Africa</strong>. He was formerlyHead of the Department of Library and <strong>Information</strong> Studies at the University of Botswana. He holds aPhD and Master’s degree <strong>in</strong> <strong>Information</strong> Science, a Postgraduate diploma <strong>in</strong> Computer Science, anda Bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> Education from the Universities of Johannesburg (SA), Wales (UK), andNairobi (Kenya).
