Please note that Library copies of ‘The Scottish genealogist’ are availableon open shelf in the Alcove off the Historical Search Room in General RegisterHouse.Withdrawal of census name indexes from the New Register House LibraryCensus name indexes for the parishes and districts are no longer requested nowthat all the open census records are available as index-linked digital images online.As they are also taking up much needed shelf-space in the New Register HouseDome it has been proposed that they are withdrawn from the Library. ASGRAmembers have been consulted with no objections raised. One family history societyhas expressed an interest in taking all of the publications. Work on deleting therelevant catalogue records will begin soon and progress will be reported in the nextupdate. Census name indexes for the counties and urban areas are being retainedin the Library as back-up. Further details are available in the Library guide.English statutory birth, death and marriage indexesThere are several online indexes which can be accessed via the Useful websites –births, deaths and marriages page. FreeBMD, a volunteer project in agreement withthe General Register Office for England and Wales, now has near completecoverage for 1837 to 1950. We recommend searching this website before orderingmicrofiche from the set of indexes, 1837 to 2002, held in the Dome.________________________________________________________________________________ScotlandsPeople Centre Library
