WOODEN BOATS ON THE WATER: WOODEN BOAT DISPLAYFriday, Saturday and SundayWooden boat builders and enthusiasts from across the Midwest are invited to display their crafts on campus throughout the weekend.Admire the work <strong>of</strong> others, get your questions answered and perhaps feel inspired to build one <strong>of</strong> your own.Friday, 6pm-8pm: Small Boat Regatta & Boat ParadePerhaps a Wooden Boat Flash Mob on the Grand Marais harbor would be a more appropriate title; let’s get on the water. Bring yourboat down to campus and enjoy a paddle or a row about with other boat enthusiasts. Or, show up a bit early and hop in one <strong>of</strong> ours.<strong>North</strong> <strong>House</strong> is home to an abundance <strong>of</strong> boats & helpful people. Put on a life jacket and get on board! At 7pm, we’ll parade by anappreciative audience gathered on the <strong>North</strong> <strong>House</strong> dock, and then gather in the harbor to enjoy one <strong>of</strong> the longest evenings <strong>of</strong> the yearwith other boat enthusiasts.WOODEN BOAT SPEAKER SERIESWatch, listen, be inspired. The adventurous and spirited journeys <strong>of</strong> sailors, boat builders and canoeists converge for two days <strong>of</strong>inspirational presentations. <strong>North</strong> <strong>House</strong> members receive Special Event Pass, for free/reduced admission to presentations andworkshops. $5/presentation for non-members. Become a member today, for as little as $25 and Get The Pass!Fri, 2 pm | Clearwater Lodge: A Hand-Hewn Legacy with Adam Van TassellAdam Van Tassell, current owner and steward <strong>of</strong> Clearwater Historic Lodge and Canoe Outfitters, will be sharing some stories aboutCharlie and Petra Boostrom who founded and built the first lodge and outfitting operation on the Gunflint Trail. The canoe outfittingbusiness was founded in 1915 and the main lodge was finished in 1926. The lodge was constructed without nails, each log was handhewn, drilled and then pegged. When completed the lodge had 14 rooms for guests, a kitchen, dining area, sitting are by the hearthand a large wrap around porch. Even more impressive than the building, is the family who lived there. Listed on the NationalHistoric Registry, Adam gives tours twice a day at the lodge, taking guests through various rooms, showing them handmade pieces <strong>of</strong>furniture and telling stories about the Boostrom family, and what life was like as the first family to live up on the trail year round.Fri, 3pm | Across Canada the Hard Way with Pete MarshallSince he went on his first canoe trip at age 16, Pete has paddled over 7,500 miles through Canada. In 2005 he and his brother,Andrew, canoed 2,700 miles over the course <strong>of</strong> 122 days from Lake <strong>of</strong> the Woods, Minnesota, to the Arctic Ocean. Most recently, in2012, he paddled from the Alaskan Coast 2600-miles across the Canadian Territories. He has a habit <strong>of</strong> mapping out long, creativecanoe routes, and has been on two expeditions that have lasted over 120-days.Fri, 4pm | Stories from the Pie Place Cafe: A Reading & Book Signing with Kathy RiceA trip to Grand Marais isn't complete without a meal and a slice <strong>of</strong> pie at the Pie Place Cafe. Muhlke's commercial fish boats that plyed the waters <strong>of</strong> the <strong>North</strong> shore, from Duluth to Knife Isle to Beaver Bay, and the SouthShore <strong>of</strong> the Lake Superior. Itwas a journey <strong>of</strong> three years and 11,700 miles, that stretched across <strong>North</strong> America, all under human power (well, with the help <strong>of</strong>some sled dogs). The <strong>North</strong> American Odyssey took the Freemans up the Pacific Coast, across the continent by foot, dogsled andcanoe, and then down the Atlantic Coast to the Florida Keys. Their route took them across some <strong>of</strong> the most spectacular wilderness onthe planet and the most densely populated coastline in <strong>North</strong> America. As they traveled, Dave and Amy brought along 80,000 schoolchildren from around the world via their educational website wildernessclassroom.com interacting with the students and teachersdaily. Please call to register (888-387-9762) $2510:00 AMFly Fishing: An Intro to Minnesota’s Trout Lakes with Mike HeroContrary to what you might imagine, fly fishing does not require rushing glacial streams and dramatic mountain backdrops. In fact,some <strong>of</strong> the best fly fishing for brook, brown and rainbow trout in <strong>North</strong>ern Minnesota and Canada is readily available in the lakes andponds <strong>of</strong> the region. However, the strategies, flies and equipment required to be successful in these waters differ greatly fromtraditional skills for stream fishing with a fly. This course is designed to take some <strong>of</strong> the mystery out <strong>of</strong> stillwater fishing andintroduce students to the world <strong>of</strong> fly fishing Minnesota’s trout lakes. <strong>North</strong> <strong>House</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> fly fishing, fly tying and flycasting classes for those who take this course and decide they want to learn more. Wood-Fired Artisan Bread Baking with Amy JamesArtisan bread is all the rage, but at <strong>North</strong> <strong>House</strong>, we’ve been pulling crispy crusts and steaming dough out <strong>of</strong> our harbor-side woodfiredoven for years. With instructor Amy James you’ll learn to bake delicious foccacia, complete with Minnesota wild rice, that youcan replicate in your own home oven. Discover the magic <strong>of</strong> wood-fired baking and taste the delectable results, leaving with a loaf <strong>of</strong>foccacia to share with your family (or keep for yourself!). This class will be 2.5 hours in length.Great Lakes Maritime History through Song & Story with Tom KastleThe Great Lakes were once home to over 1,800 tall ships. When salt water sailors came to the Great Lakes they brought their culturewith them, including language, technology, community, superstitions, customs, and jurisprudence. The ballads (forebitters) andshanties were adopted and adapted by freshwater sailors and spread throughout the region, to lumber camps, saloons, other vessels,and, sometimes, back out to the oceans <strong>of</strong> the world. Join singer, songwriter, and tall ship captain Tom Kastle for an intriguing andinteractive look at our heritage.3:00 PMTell Me a Story: How to Tell Stories Together with Rose Arrowsmith-DecouxKids and grown-ups will learn how to tell fresh and engaging stories together and to each other.
