Media InformationFor The Media...To the MediaThe 2007 Mercer University BaseballMedia Guide is intended to provide youwith general information about Mercer’sbaseball team. This information should alsoassist you in your coverage of the teamthroughout the season. Thesepolicies and procedures are for the benefitof your needs and those of the student-athletesand coaches. The Mercer baseball program will look to build off animpressive 2006 campaign in which they finished 34-26, came inthird-place in the Atlantic Sun Conference and clinched a two seedat the A-Sun Championships in DeLand, Fla. Mercer came up justshort of a conference championship last year, but due to a solidcore of returning players and a list of impressive newcomers, headcoach Craig Gibson and his staff have reason to be optimistic forthe upcoming year.Last season, the Bears were eliminated by host Stetson insemifinal action at the A-Sun tournament, 5-4. The Bears showedthe type of resiliency they displayed all season in the final gameagainst the Hatters. Trailing by four runs entering the bottom ofthe ninth, Mercer put together a late rally but fell just short to theeventual tournament champion. Highlights of the2006 season included the Bears upending regularseasonAtlantic Sun champion, Jacksonville, at theconference tournament, defeating No. 1 Florida, 3-2, in Gainesville, Fla. on Feb. 15 and taking agame at No. 1 Clemson, 3-2, Feb. 25.Stellar pitching and timely hitting carriedthe Bears last season. Closer Andrew Urena wasselected as an All-American and tabbed first teamAll-Atlantic Sun. Urena finished second in thenation with 15 saves and was selected by theChicago White Sox during the 11th round of theJune major league baseball draft. The loss ofUrena will hurt, but Mercer returns seven keyposition players along with staff ace BrantleyNew. Blake Quarles and J.C. Daugherty will becounted upon in the middle of the rotation andhighly touted newcomer, Corey Gearrin, will takeover for Urena at the back end of the bullpen.PitchersSenior Brantley New made waves as a starter last season,earning first team all-conference honors, compiling a record of 9-3 with a 3.60 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 100 innings of work. Newwas also selected during the amateur draft in the 27th round by theBoston Red Sox, but decided to return to Mercer for his seniorseason. New's return will provide stability at the front of theBears' rotation. Solidifying the starting rotation this season will beseniors J.C. Daugherty and Blake Quarles. Daugherty finished theyear 3-1 with a 5.22 ERA and 41 strikeouts, and Quarles went 4-2 sporting a 5.23 ERA and 60 strikeouts. Also in the mix for thestarting rotation are junior college transfers Justin Boyette andBoone Webster. Boyette joined the Bears from Okaloosa-Walton,and Webster comes by way of Young Harris. During his freshmanand sophomore seasons at Young Harris, Webster helped his squadwin the Region XVII Championship and a pair of second-placefinishes in the East Central District. He posted three wins andpicked up four saves as a freshman, and won five games with onesave in his second season at Young Harris.“With New, Quarles and Daugherty returning to anchorthe staff we have answered our weekend questions,” said headcoach Craig Gibson.Replacing Urena's closer role will be no easy task forGibson, but incoming junior college transfer Cory Gearrin willmake the transition a smooth one. Gearrin performed admirablyduring the prestigious Cape Cod League, earning all-star honorsand a top-30 prospect distinction. He finished the summer 2-1with a 1.67 ERA, picking up eight saves and registering 41 strikeoutsin 27 innings. Gearrin gives hitters fits with his low, threequartersdelivery and quality slider. Providing depth in the Bears'bullpen will be senior Mike Narveson, junior Andy Campbell andsophomore Kyle Bedrosian. Last season, Narveson struck out 22batters in 31 innings, while registering a 1-1 record. Campbellenters the season on a roll as he was named most valuable pitcherforthe Winter Pines Warthogs of the Florida Collegiate SummerLeague. McCarty is coming off an All-Freshmanteam selection, making an immediate impact in his rookie campaign,hitting .309 with seven doubles and 25 RBIs. This seasonMcCarty will shift to second base, and make room for junior JoshLowey and sophomore Steven Karwatt to battle it out at the hotcorner.Lowey red-shirted last season, but had two successfulseasons at Okaloosa-Walton Junior College, batting .318 with 59RBIs. Junior Tyler Brown, a transfer from Middle GeorgiaCollege, is expected to fill the designated hitter role this seasonand can play first base. He was selected as an all-star and namedto the all-league team in the Valley Summer League. Brown batted.292 with five long balls and 29 RBIs. He will add anotherpower source in the Bears’ lineup.Freshman Michael Langley, out of Parkview HighSchool in Lilburn, Ga., will add depth to the infield. He then took over as thehead baseball coach at Jupiter Community High School in Jupiter,Fla., for two years before moving over to Suncoast CommunityHigh School in Riviera Beach, Fla., for one season. Gibsonwrapped up his high school coaching career in 1993 as the headcoach at Palm Beach Gardens High School in Palm Beach, Fla.In August 1993, Gibson got the call to come home andserve as an assistant under Myers. With his strong ties to Mercerand a wealth of coaching experience, it made Athletics DirectorBobby Pope’s choice an easy one when he elevated Gibson to thehead job following Myers resignation.During his time as an assistant, Gibson coached fourplayers who were drafted by the Major Leagues and helped leadMercer to two A-Sun divisional titles. The Bears also advanced tothe A-Sun Tournament three times, finishing as high as third in1999. Coaching StaffTim BoethAssistant Coach - Second SeasonIn his second season with the Bears,Boeth has been appointed head coach CraigGibson’s top assistant and recruiting coordinator.He was a key contributor to Mercer’s 34-26 campaign last season, and brings a wealth ofcoaching and playing experience to Gibson’sstaff. Boeth’s aggressive style of coaching hascarried over to his players on the field.Boeth joined the athletic department at MercerUniversity in August 2005. He stepped into an excellent situationwith an experienced staff and quality returning players. His onfieldresponsibilities include serving as the Bears’ hitting instructor,as well as base running and infield coach. Mercer posted a.297 batting average as a club during the 2006 season, while averagingjust short of six runs per contest. On the bases, the Bearsbecame more aggressive, stealing 68 bags at a 71 percent successrate. Defensively, Mercer was ranked among the best in theAtlantic Sun, fielding .963 on the year.Prior to joining the staff at Mercer, Boeth coached underDerek Wolfe for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs in the FloridaCollegiate Summer League. He helped lead the Dawgs to theirfirst FCSL pennant in 2005. The Winter Park affiliate led theleague in stolen bases, averaging just under three swipes per game.The Diamond Dawgs produced five league all-stars in the summerof 2005, including two position players. Aside from aidingin the success of his team, Boeth achieved personal honorsbeing named to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team in 1998and second team All-Atlantic Sun in 1999. In the 1999 season,Boeth finished third nationally and first in the Atlantic Sun instolen bases. In 1998, he batted .303 with 25 stolen bases, and thefollowing season Boeth hit .361 with 45 stolen bases, 60 runsscored, three home runs and 39 RBI. His 45 stolen bases still rankthird in UCF single-season history.Prior to his time at UCF, Boeth played at TallahasseeCommunity College for Mike McCleod. He helped lead TCC toa third-place finish FJCAA State Tournament in 1996. He wasalso named first team All-Pan-Handle following the 1997 season.Boeth left TCC as the single-season and all-time hits leader.Boeth played his high school baseball under Greg Jones,at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Fla. He was a two-sport letterwinner at Leon, and competed in the Final Four two times withthe baseball squad as well as three appearances in the Final Fourin soccer. Boeth was a five-time first team all-state selection,twice in baseball and three times in soccer. He also garnered thirdplace in Florida’s Mr. Soccer as a senior. Danny McMurtryAssistant Coach - First SeasonDanny McMurtry joined Gibson’s staffas the pitching coach for the upcoming seasonin September 2006. He comes way ofOkaloosa-Walton, and has an excellent reputationas a coach and recruiter. McMurtry willinherit a quality pitching staff this season,anchored by senior Brantley New. Also, thereturn of Blake Quarles and J.C. Daugherty,along with junior college transfer Correy Gearrin should makeMcMurtry’s transition an easy one.McMurtry excelled at Okaloosa-Walton Junior Collegein Niceville, Fla., where he was the pitching coach and recruitingcoordinator. Two of the pitchers on this staff were chosen in the2006 Major League Baseball amatuer player draft. The recruitingclass that he helped bring in added an additional five players thatwere chosen in the draft as well.Before arriving at Okaloosa-Walton, McMurtry workedas an assistant coach at Monmouth University in Long Branch,N.J. McMurtry was named the pitching coach and recruiting coordinatorat Monmouth. He helped lead the staff to school recordsin both team ERA and wins. Megahee is responsible for the academic progress of thebaseball program, assisting with theteam's hitters and serving as the catchinginstuctor.Megahee spent the summerof 2006 with the Florence RedWolvesof the Coastal Plains League. Hehelped Florence to a 32-18 record,fourth-best in the league. Megaheeserved as the team's hitting and infieldcoach. The 2006 RedWolves set teamfranchise records for batting average(.268), home runs (29) and on-basepercentage (.350). In 2003,he earned a World Series ring with the Florida Marlins serving asa batting practice pitcher.1973 - The year Eddie Creech was drafted by the MontrealExpos, becoming the first player drafted from Mercer.Gibson, Craig - The third head coach in school history,Gibson has ties to Mercer that date back to 1984. It was then thatGibson began his playing career at Mercer that culminated withbeing named A-Sun Player of the Year in 1985. He would go onto serve as assistant coach for seven years before being elevated tothe top spot for the 2004 campaign.Hendley, Bobby - A graduate of Mercer, Hendley neverplayed baseball at Mercer, but went on to have a distinguishedcareer in the major leagues. He pitched in one of the most perfectgames in baseball history, allowing one hit in a loss to the Dodgerswhile Sandy Koufax threw a no-hitter.Jackson, Muzzy - A stellar first baseman for the Bears,Jackson was drafted by Chicago White Sox in 1990. He is still inbaseball today, serving as the vice president of baseball operationsfor the Kansas City Royals.Knocking Off The Elite - On May 9, 1988, the Bears toppledthe seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets on the road, 11-7. Sevenyears later, the Bears caught lightning again, upsetting the 10thrankedYellow Jackets, 6-5, at home on March 4, 1994. Last season,the Bears went into Gainesville, Fla. and knocked off the No.1 Gators, 3-2, on Feb. 15. A week later, Mercer stunned No. 1Clemson, 3-2, in Clemson, S.C.New Surface - Claude Smith Field underwent an extensiverenovation during the summer of 2003, transforming the field intoone of the finest playing surfaces in the Southeast. The renovationincluded a new drainage system, a new laser-leveled field as wellas an indoor batting cage. The baseball team also moved into anew locker room in the University Center in 2004.Pettini, Joe - A hard-hitting shortstop in his playing days atMercer, Pettini signed with the Montreal Expos. He played at themajor league level for the San Francisco Giants and is now thebench coach with the St. Louis Cardinals, earning a World Seriesring in 2006.Smith, Claude - The longest tenured coach in school history,Smith was in charge of the Mercer baseball program for 29 seasons,leading the Bears to a 405-314-2 record. He is still linked toMercer baseball today as the field bares his name.Smith, Tim & Randy - Claude Smith’s nephews certainlymade their impact at Mercer. Both players were drafted in 1990 by the Los AngelesDodgers and faced each other in a spring training game in 1997.Mike would go on to pitch for Philadelphia, going 9-7 with a 4.15ERA in his first season, 1995.Mixon, Tommy - One of Mercer’s all-time greats in basketball,Mixon was one of the top scouts in the major leagues. Heworked his way into being one of the top scouts for the LosAngeles Dodgers, and drafted five former Bears during his tenure.Myers, Barry - The former head coach of the Bears, Myersled Mercer to three A-Sun Championships and three more divisiontitles. Coached by second-year head coach Barry Myers, the 1979 Mercer Bears squad finishedwith an overall record of 38-16. Coach Myers was named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year, as heled the Bears to their first A-Sun Tournament championship.The Bears had four players named to the All-Tournament team. Dan Fitzsimmons, Scott Halam,Frank Millerd and Jay Ross rounded out the All-Tournament selections. Those four helped theBears prevail in the double-elimination tournament that was held in Shreveport, La. on the campusof Centenary. After winning their first three contests by a combined score of 25-1, the Bears wouldfall to Oklahoma City, 11-8, forcing a single-game playoff for the championship.Mercer won, 6-3, as the Bears were named the first-ever champions of the Atlantic SunConference.1979A-Sun Champions38-16A-Sun ChampionshipsSection1981A-Sun Champions39-12/3-4 A-SunLed by arguably the best pitching staff in Mercer’s history, the 1981 Bears finished with a39-12 record and another A-Sun championship. All-conference pitcher Dan Fitzsimmons led theBears to a school-record 3.36 team ERA, as the Bears captured their second championship in threeseasons.After finishing as the runner-up in the conference tournament the year before, Mercer managedonly a 3-4 conference record, good enough for second place in the East division. The Bears openedup the conference tournament with a pair of wins over the two division winners, Hardin-Simmonsand Georgia Southern. In the championship, Mercer would defeat Georgia Southern 9-3, handingthe Eagles their only two losses to a conference foe all season, avenging their loss in the championshipgame from the previous year.The All-Tournament team was loaded with Bears, as seven members of the team would comefrom Mercer. Pitchers Scott Barnhouse and Tim Werkin were joined by Lawrence Walter, DaveJedneski, Wayne Ryle, Frank Millerd and Tim Smith as Barry Myers won his second A-Sun Coachof the Year award.1983A-Sun Champions29-26The Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, Jack Pool, led the 1983 team to the Bears’ last A-Suntournament championship. The third baseman hit .414 with 80 RBIs that season, as he was alsonamed to the All-Tournament team for his efforts.Mercer finished the season with a 29-26 record, which put the Bears in fourth place in the regularseason standings. They hit .318 as a team while leading the league in scoring, averagingalmost eight runs per game.Mercer opened up the tournament with an 8-6 victory over Georgia State, then showed its muscle,defeating Hardin-Simmons, 21-4. The Bears wrapped up the championship with back-to-backwins over Arkansas-Little Rock, 17-5 and 16-4.Pool was joined on the All-Tournament team by Tim Smith, an outfielder who still holds theseason record for home runs at Mercer with 24 in 1982. HistoryFounded Sept. 19, 1978, the Atlantic Sun Conference hasoperated over a quarter century in the ever-changing landscape ofintercollegiate athletics with a consistent commitment to itsConstitutional Mission to "assist its member institutions in themaintenance of programs of intercollegiate athletics which arecompatible with the highest standards of education and competitivesports." Formerly known as the Trans America AthleticConference, the A-Sun changed its name in June 2001 and introduceda new visual identity that distinguishes the league.Ted Gumbart became the A-Sun’s fourth full-time commissionerwhen he took the reigns in January 2007. Gumbart followedBill Bibb (1991-2006), Lou McCullough (1983-91) andBob Vanatta (1979-83). The A-Sun office has been in Macon, Ga.,since April 1992, after relocating from Athens, Ga. (1983-1992).The first office was located in Shreveport, La. (1979-1983).Academic ExcellenceThe Atlantic Sun Conference continues to prove that it excelsboth athletically and academically. In 2005-06, more than 50 percentof the conference's student-athletes who participated duringthe season earned all-academic honors. For the spring seasonalone, 52.2 percent of student-athletes in the A-Sun were honored,as compared to 50.0 percent during the fall, giving the conferencea total of 51.4 percent honored.This marks the third consecutive year that the A-Sun has surpassedthe 50 percent total. Belmont University won the A-SunAll-Academic Trophy for the fifth consecutive year. The award isgiven annually to the conference school with the greatest percentageof student-athletes receiving all academic honors. TheNashville school finished with 65.1 percent of all student-athletesearning the honor. For the fourth consecutive year, women's crosscountry had the highest rate of student-athletes earn all-academic,as 66.7 percent (92 of 138) were honored, with women's golf placingsecond at 64.6 percent. Four women's cross country and fourwomen's soccer teams received All-Academic national recognitionfrom their respective coaches associations.Mercer's Will Emerson earned A-Sun Student-Athlete of theYear for the second consecutive year and academic All-Americaon the men's basketball first team. On the women's side, ETSUwomen's soccer standout Erin Ashton was voted A-Sun Student-Athlete of the Year. Both received NCAA PostgraduateScholarships.The bar for academic excellence in the league was set in2003-04 as Belmont broke its own single-season conference markwith 71.4% of its athletes earning All-Academic honors (152 of213). A record 52.8 percent of all A-Sun athletes earned all-academichonors that year.Athletic ExcellenceThe A-Sun has continually matched its classroom achievementwith success on the playing fields. Over the past eight-plusyears, the A-Sun has posted NCAA wins in each of the team sportsthat it sponsors. For the seventh straight season the A-Sunadvanced multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship,with tournament champion Stetson and regular season championJacksonville receiving bids in 2006. The A-Sun also sent multipleteams to the NCAA men's golf championship for the fourthstraight season in 2006 as Top-15 ranked ETSU joined A-Sunchamp Jacksonville at NCAA Regionals. Athletics Section StaffWilliam D. Underwood was selectedto serve as the 18th president of MercerUniversity beginning July 1, 2006. Prior tojoining Mercer, Underwood served atBaylor University as interim president andheld the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair atthe Baylor School of Law, having joinedthe law faculty in 1990 after practicing lawwith a large firm in Dallas. He also took aleave of absence from the Law Schoolfrom 1997-98 to serve as Baylor's generalcounsel.Underwood is an accomplished educatorand scholar. He was designated aMaster Teacher at Baylor in recognition ofThe dean of Atlantic Sun Conferenceathletics directors, Bobby Pope is in his18 th year at the helm of Mercer athletics.During his tenure, he has seen thegrowth of the program to 14 sports, as wellas the addition of the first full-time coachesfor men’s and women's golf, men’s andwomen’s tennis and cross country.Facility upgrades have been a prioritysince he became athletics director, as evidencedby the state-of-the-art UniversityCenter, home to the men’s and women’sbasketball teams as well as volleyball.
